"We're bloody embarrassed with the way we played. We have real pride about the people that represent this footy club at the moment, but I don't know … we'll find out a little bit about ourselves, because that was as bad as it gets. ... We're embarrassed by that performance. That's as big a shellacking in general play that you'll see in a game of footy. The white flag went up from us. If you look at all of the things that we value in the way we've gone about our footy, we didn't see it today at all. It's inexplicable, to be honest. It's not something we saw coming and it's not something we thought we were capable of. ... It's the first time in a long time we've seen some average physical efforts. It was plain for all to see. There was one side that bodylined the ball and ran hard and straight. Then there was another side that got out of the way a few times. It's not easy to say, but it's the reality. There's a question that rightfully should be asked. ... Tackling or being tackled … we couldn't find any time or space with our hands, so all credit to the pressure they put on, but we were missing a lot of targets and making it a hot potato. It was 'I feel a bit of pressure so here you go, look after this'. We weren't looking out for each other. One of the things we've prided ourselves on as a group is being a third-man in to support, or making our teammates' jobs easier. We didn't do that at all tonight. You can lose a game of footy or you can't perform at your best, but you don't ever want to have your teammates question whether you have their back or not. Potentially, we can question that tonight. That's how poor a performance it was and how disappointed we are." – Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley |

AFLThe 11.15 (81) to 5.7 (37) scoreline at Marvel Stadium perhaps didn't do justice to North Melbourne's dominance over the contest. It remarkably kept Collingwood to its lowest score in more than 24 years, while missing a host of opportunities itself in attack. ... For Nathan Buckley, there was little improvement from last week. Having been heavily and unusually critical of his side's performance in a narrow victory over the Western Bulldogs, things went from bad to worse. His side lost key players Ben Reid and Brayden Sier to injury, but that was no excuse as the Pies conceded the inside 50 count by a staggering 29 entries in a dismal performance. The individual display of Adam Treloar (39 disposals, 10 clearances, seven tackles) was one of few positives on a night Collingwood will hope to quickly forget. Fox Footy The Magpies were rarely in the game at Marvel Stadium, with the Kangaroos’ inaccuracy the only thing keeping them in the contest in the opening half. Rhyce Shaw’s men smashed the more fancied black and white engine room, amassing 29 more inside 50s, 28 more disposals, 14 more scoring shots and 11 more contested possessions. ... The Magpies are now two games behind Geelong on the ladder, level with West Coast at 10-4 with eight games to play. Collingwood News Collingwood quite simply got smashed by North Melbourne. It lost the inside 50 count by 28 entries, had 14 fewer scoring shots and – in reality – was lucky the margin was only 44 points when the final siren put the Pies out of their misery. ... Beaten in both contested ball and clearances, North Melbourne's midfield – led by Ben Cunnington and Jack Ziebell – quickly overwhelmed its highly skilled opponents. The Age Last week Nathan Buckley was angry because his team played terribly and still won. This week they played worse. This was as bad as Collingwood have played in two years. It is also as well as North Melbourne have played ... since last week. North have been excellent since the moment Brad Scott announced he was going, (including Scott’s last game as coach). This was not the response Buckley would have expected after being chastened by their near loss last week. Buckley now has far more significant questions to answer about his side, having satisfied himself now that last week was not an aberration. The second-placed team on the ladder playing a team that has changed their coach kicked five goals. For the match. Under a roof. It was their lowest score since round 5, 1995. This left them still in second place, but only percentage ahead of West Coast. They could offer no pressure around the ball, no speed of ball movement, and little clean possession. They over handballed and lost structure. Their midfield was thoroughly beaten that they had no answer to North around the ball. |

What it means for Collingwood: This season the Magpies have generally done little more than what's been required to win, and they were flat in their victory over the wasteful Bulldogs last round. Expect them to show more energy and increase their defensive efforts. What it means for North Melbourne: A golden opportunity for the rebuilding Roos to produce an upset against a highly rated opponent that has been less than convincing in recent weeks. Their best chance might be to play fast but with discretion. The stat: In their past two head-to-head clashes the Magpies have burst clear early to win by 54 and 66 points respectively, while keeping the Roos to tallies of just seven and nine goals. The match-up: Brodie Grundy v Todd Goldstein Magpies star Grundy (ranked the AFL's second-best ruckman at No.3 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) will face stiff opposition from Kangaroos southpaw Goldstein (the fourth-ranked ruckman at No.20) . It's a big week for: Rhyce Shaw Straight after coaching against his younger brother, Greater Western Sydney veteran Heath Shaw, North's caretaker coach takes on his beloved former club where his family name is royalty. The emotion of the occasion won't get to him – he has already taken on the Pies plenty of times as a Swans player and assistant coach. Big call: Pies key defender Darcy Moore, a contender for a spot in the All Australian team, will eclipse his personal-best effort of five contested marks. Prediction: Magpies by 21 points |

AFLCOLLINGWOOD has made a habit of winning games this year when not at its best. Of all the habits for a football team to have, this is one you'd choose. And again, that proved the way for the Magpies on Sunday as they eventually shrugged off a persistent and plucky Western Bulldogs outfit to win by nine points. But it wasn't easy. Just when the Pies looked in control of the contest in the second half, the Bulldogs would find a way to strike back. The 13.4 (82) to 10.13 (73) scoreline underpins a tight contest, in one of the Bulldogs' most impressive games of the season, despite the result. It was the outstanding showing of Magpies ruckman Brodie Grundy that perhaps separated the sides, with the star big man collecting 25 disposals and 50 hitouts in a complete performance. He also booted two important goals, including one midway through the last quarter from long range that sealed the Pies' 10th win of the season and should see him awarded another best-afield three votes on Brownlow Medal night. Fox Footy Collingwood’s defence has copped a bad injury blow with interceptor Jeremy Howe limping off against the Western Bulldogs. Howe went off with a suspected calf injury during the second quarter of Sunday’s game and at halftime was ruled out for the remainder of the contest. It’s a case of bad timing for the Magpies with fellow intercepting defender Tom Langdon on the sidelines for an indefinite period. Collingwood News Not many first-year players instantly alter the way their team attacks. For Collingwood, Jaidyn Stephenson was the exception. However, the young Pie's 10-match suspension for betting on AFL matches has forced his club into another reshuffle inside 50 – this one not as welcome as the change he affected when he was recruited to the club with pick No.6 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft. While the popular opinion had suggested Josh Daicos would claim Stephenson's place in the side, offering the Pies the most like-for-like switch, the club's match committee instead opted for Ben Reid and a three-pronged tall forward line that it had long neglected. Reid's inclusion alongside Mason Cox and Brody Mihocek – as well as Jordan De Goey, who plays above his 188cm frame – might have been decided in large part by the opposition. The Western Bulldogs have an undersized backline and last week struggled against the contested marking of Carlton key forward Charlie Curnow, who kicked seven goals. Regardless, Sunday's nine-point victory – while rather unconvincing – would have given Collingwood's coaching department reason to be optimistic for the future. The Age If Brodie Grundy is playing hurt, the mind boggles at what he might be able to achieve when fully fit. A neck injury almost kept the Collingwood star out of the Queen’s Birthday game against Melbourne a fortnight ago, a match in which he was beaten by fellow ruck ace Max Gawn. But the mid-season freshen-up seems to have done Grundy the world of good. For the second time this season he was the architect in a workmanlike Magpie win over the Western Bulldogs. For what felt like the umpteenth time this season, the Pies only sporadically hit great heights but were defensively resolute enough to withstand a plucky but fundamentally flawed Dogs outfit, who only cut the margin back to single figures with a couple of goals deep into time-on of the final quarter. |

What it means for the Western Bulldogs: Given their upcoming run of fixtures, it's big. They face Collingwood, an interstate trip to Port Adelaide and Geelong in the next three games, so this result could be the difference between breathing new life and momentum into their season or falling irretrievably adrift of the chasing pack outside the eight. What it means for Collingwood: Five teams currently lead the race to finish top four, and with Geelong setting the pace, pressure remains on third-placed Collingwood and co. Their eight wins in the past nine games started by beating the Bulldogs and they need to keep the ball rolling. The stat: Collingwood star ruckman Brodie Grundy won the hitout count 60-6 against Tim English in round four this season. The All Australian monstered his more inexperienced opponent and in doing so had the highest percentage of hitouts in a game during the AFL era The match-up: Marcus Bontempelli v Scott Pendlebury Both are stars, both are born leaders, both are left-footers, both find time and space like few others. The similarities between Bontempelli (14th in the Official AFL Player Ratings) and Pendlebury (25th) are evident. If either gets the upper hand, their side will be well on the way to a win. It’s a big week for: Josh Dunkley The Bulldogs' midfielder re-signed with the club for a further three years on Tuesday and has set a remarkable standard in the past six weeks, averaging 32.5 disposals to provide another dimension in the middle. A career-best 41 touches last week against Carlton alerted many to his rapid rise, and now arguably the premier midfield group in the competition awaits as his latest challenge. Big call: Dunkley gets leather poisoning again with 40-plus disposals. Prediction: Collingwood by 12 points |

"We felt like we set it up the way we wanted to. We had some time from our last game and we really haven’t liked our last month, to be honest. We just needed to get back to closer to the brand we wanted to execute and the first half was definitely that, there were still elements in the second half we can improve on. You are not going to take those great strides in one step so it was a step in the right direction and a positive outcome for us, more so the way we went about it. Fox FootyCollingwood has returned to the winners list via a 41-point victory over Melbourne on Queen’s Birthday; but this was not a story about Nathan Buckley’s side. While the Magpies looked dangerous at times, and now sit a game clear of the rest of the AFL in second - although still two wins behind Geelong - this wasn’t them at their best. The margin disguised that. Instead, this was a game showing exactly what is wrong with the Demons in 2019, and why they will not play finals footy despite being widely tipped as a flag contender in the pre-season. In the bad old days at Demonland, the Queen’s Birthday game was somewhat condescendingly referred to as ‘their Grand Final’. It wasn’t supposed to be like that this season. But the Dees rolled up to the MCG sitting at 3-8; if there was any hope of a miracle charge towards the finals they were going to need to win almost every game left on the fixture. And in a game of that importance, they simply couldn’t hit a target. It was frustrating even for non-fans. Collingwood News Anything you can do, we can match. That is well and truly the message Collingwood is sending to Geelong. After the flag favourite Cats opened an elongated round 12 with a statement of intent, the challenging Pies closed the weekend with a similar declaration of their own ambitions. Collingwood's 41-point victory over Melbourne on Queen's Birthday Monday wasn't as emphatic as Geelong's over Richmond earlier in the weekend, but it was as necessary. The 15.8 (98) to 7.15 (57) win ensured the Pies remained the Cats' biggest threat for top spot, while it took them a game clear of the Giants in second heading into next week's bye. Wide World Of Sports Collingwood have moved to outright second on the AFL ladder after defeating a wayward Melbourne by 41 points in the annual Queen's Birthday clash at the MCG. The polished Pies were never seriously challenged in a 15.8 (98) to 7.15 (57) win that gives them a four-point buffer over third-placed GWS ahead of their mid-season bye. Jordan De Goey, Jaidyn Stephenson and Will Hoskin-Elliott each booted three goals, Adam Treloar starred in the midfield and Brodie Grundy split the points in a much-anticipated ruck battle with fellow All-Australian Max Gawn. It is 16th-placed Melbourne's fourth-straight loss and they are yet to beat any of the top eight sides this season. The Age Collingwood were belted in the middle of the ground and in the ruck by a rampant Max Gawn, but Nathan Buckley was pleased his team had taken a big step forward in rediscovering its form after a poor month. The Magpies defeated Melbourne by 41 points in front of 74,036 people at the MCG on Queen's Birthday and entrenched themselves in second spot on the ladder, a game clear of third. Having dropped a game against Fremantle last week, other results fell Collingwood's way this round after fellow top four contenders GWS, West Coast and Richmond all lost. Buckley was pleased his side controlled the game defensively even though they were beaten in clearances and contested football. Melbourne had also been unable to punish them on the scoreboard with wayward goal and field kicking. |

Sier’s form has progressed in recent weeks in Collingwood’s VFL side, collecting 34 disposals and a goal against Port Melbourne on Sunday. The 21-year-old was a revelation for the Magpies in the back half of last season. With Dayne Beams injured, coach Nathan Buckley is backing everyone in the team to cover the loss of the star midfielder. "We think we've got a strong philosophy of role play and blokes coming in and playing their role," Buckley said. "At various times the synergy and the connection of the team is better or worse and that's probably what form is and if we're in good form then the rising tide carries all boats – we go a bit better." Cox has overcome an ankle issue that has seen the 211cm forward sidelined for five weeks. Alongside Sier and Cox on the extended bench are James Aish, Travis Varcoe, Ben Reid, Isaac Quaynor, Josh Daicos and Ben Crocker. Taylor Adams (groin), Dayne Beams (hip) and Jamie Elliott (hamstring) were unavailable for selection. |
What it means for Collingwood: A win would complete a successful first half of the season before the third-placed Pies enjoy a well-earned rest, but a second successive upset loss at the MCG would raise some doubts. What it means for Melbourne: Simon Goodwin's team needs to recapture some semblance of the uncompromising brand they created last year, and only that will do against a rebounding Collingwood. Victory could kickstart the 16th-placed Demons on a long road to recovery. The stat: The Demons have been hot favourites in their past two clashes against the Pies but have failed miserably on both occasions – by 16 points in the last round of 2017, thus missing the finals, and by 42 points in last year's Queen's Birthday clash. The match-up: Brodie Grundy v Max Gawn In the eyes of many, Magpie big man Grundy (ranked No.3 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) has taken over from Demon counterpart Gawn (No.1) as the AFL's premier ruckman, so here's the perfect opportunity to settle it – at least for now. It's a big week for: Sam Weideman It'll also be a long week for the young key forward after he fluffed a chance to be the hero in his AFL return against Adelaide in Darwin, missing an otherwise regulation set shot in the dying seconds. He'll be keen to atone in his first Queen's Birthday game against the club his father and grandfather represented. Big call: Demon accumulator Clayton Oliver to break the handball record of 35 held by Crow Matt Crouch. Prediction: Magpies by 23 points |

Fox FootyMidway through the third term, (Michael) Walters had a shot on goal which went through the big sticks, with replays later confirming Collingwood veteran Chris Mayne had touched the ball off the boot. The goal was reviewed by the umpires, but the error wasn’t picked up until minutes later as play had resumed, with the review instead checking Magpie Steele Sidebottom’s attempt to spoil the ball on the line. “It was in the middle of a five-goal surge by the Fremantle Dockers,” North Melbourne champion David King explained on Fox Footy. “He (Walters) snaps the ball across his body and you can see the left hand I think it is of Chris Mayne. It just brushes the fingers. That’s clearly touched. “It was sent upstairs to be reviewed, the Collingwood players put themselves into a zone, they were adamant that it was touched. At that stage it was a six point margin and it brought the scores back to square and it kept Fremantle’s momentum going. “This is critical in a four point result. We’re talking about a high stakes industry. To not review that area of kick, they reviewed it on the line.” ... King was adamant a thorough review needed to be undertaken, whether it took an extra few seconds or not. “There’s only two points to check, if it takes an extra three seconds to get the decision right that is the whole reason why we have the score review in place,” he said. “The one on the line would’ve taken all of two seconds, it cleared the line by a metre. Collingwood players were adamant, all their hands went in the air, now that’s generally a pretty good guide. “We’re using common sense apparently with umpiring across the code, so why wouldn’t we use this or apply this in a score-review sense.” Collingwood News Nathan Buckley says Collingwood wouldn't have deserved to beat Fremantle, refusing to blame another goal review controversy as a factor in the defeat. The Pies were shocked at the MCG on Saturday, losing to the Dockers by four points after Michael Walters booted a goal with 30 seconds to go to put the visitors ahead. However, it was Walters' first goal – a spinning snap in the third term – that again highlighted the inconsistencies of the goal review system when Magpie Chris Mayne appeared to touch the kick off Walters' boot. It was one of a four-goal run the Dockers produced in the important third term that steeled them for the last-ditch win. Buckley questioned whether the kick had been scrutinised to the level required using the League's technology, but said his team would not have deserved to claim the win after their last-term fadeout. Wide World Of Sports Chris Mayne was adamant that he touched it, Nathan Buckley wasn't sure and Ross Lyon didn't care one way or the other. The AFL's score review system will be put under the microscope after a Michael Walters goal, touched off the boot. It was allowed to stand in Fremantle's thrilling four-point win over Collingwood at the MCG. Walters' brilliant snap in traffic levelled the scores and was the second of four unanswered goals in the pivotal third quarter of Saturday's clash. Players from both sides set up for a kick in, believing a behind would be declared after a video review showed fingers on Mayne's left hand bent back by the ball as he went to spoil the kick. But the review appeared to concentrate on Steele Sidebottom's desperate lunge on the goal line that clearly occurred behind the line. "There didn't seem to be a thorough review of it, so the umpires were either really clear that it wasn't touched or it wasn't looked at externally," Buckley told reporters after the match. "I'm not sure why it wasn't looked at closer. "It's probably a bit topical right now, isn't it? "We didn't deserve to win so you guys can have a look at the minutiae for me. "I'll leave you to sort that out - we didn't deserve to win today." The Age Collingwood have refused to blame the decision not to overturn a Michael Walters goal in the third quarter - which was touched off the boot - for their four-point loss to Fremantle at the MCG. Former Docker Chris Mayne did not hesitate after the game when asked whether he had touched the kick that curled through for a goal. "I definitely touched it. I was a bit shocked," Mayne said. "[Fremantle forward] Jesse Hogan was saying it was touched, funnily enough ... but there are moments throughout a whole game that come and go and in the end they were good enough to keep going for harder and longer and that is what happens." |
