The Pies tried hard throughout and even looked the better side at times, but were ultimately outclassed by their more experienced opponents as they slumped to a 16th loss for the season. Midfield duo Taylor Adams (31 disposals and 10 clearances) and Jordan De Goey (23 touches) won plenty of the ball, while goal-sneak Jamie Elliott played a lone hand up forward with four goals. ... The last 12 months haven't been great for the Magpie Army, but there are enough positive signs coming out of the Holden Centre to think a rapid rise up the ladder won't be too far away. The nucleus of Brodie Grundy, Taylor Adams, Darcy Moore, Jordan De Goey and Jack Crisp are still in their prime, while teenagers Jack Ginnivan, Jay Rantall, Oliver Henry and Finlay Macrae have shown enough this season to prove they will be around for some time. Throw another talented Daicos into the mix and Nathan Buckley's successor has plenty to work with in 2022 and beyond.

The Dons had secured an unlikely return to the finals, the Pies had long been playing out time in a tumultuous year for the club, and the two sides produced the type of bruise-free football associated with such a low-stakes game. Had this been cricket, the players would’ve shaken hands 20 minutes into the third quarter, the Bombers content with first innings points and the Pies glad to get on the end-of-season beers 45 minutes early.

Interim Collingwood coach Robert Harvey says he is yet to discuss his future with the Magpies’ hierarchy as he focuses on steering his side through the last two games of the season. Bested by Hawthorn and Alastair Clarkson – the man set to be courted by the Pies at season’s end – at the MCG on Sunday, Harvey says he is enjoying the caretaker role. “It’s just trying to get all the pieces together and trying to get what we are trying to achieve in this last nine weeks (since he took over),” Harvey said. “I do enjoy seeing the players trying to get the best out of themselves, young and old. I’d like to win a few more games, yes, and that’s disappointing, but, in the end, it is good fun, I like it, it’s what I do.”

Alastair Clarkson’s stunning Hawthorn stint is finishing on an upswing after his side recorded its second consecutive win thanks to a blistering first half performance against Collingwood. The Hawks stifled Collingwood across the first two and a half quarters, dominating the uncontested possession count to kick 12 of the first 16 goals of the game. The Magpies pushed hard in the closing stages of the final two quarters with goal rushes, but the Hawks had all the answers — and the scoreboard ascendancy after a dominant start — to run out 19-point winners, 15.7 (97) to 12.6 (78).

The Hawks enjoyed the width of the wings, constantly sliced their way through Collingwood’s defence and stamped their authority in the second stanza, when a typical Ben McEvoy contested mark deep in the forward line catalysed a crucial four-goal-to-two term. If the warning bells had not yet sounded in Collingwood’s coaches’ box, they were surely bellowing beneath the empty MCG in the changerooms by half-time, after the Pies had managed only three of the game’s first 11 goals. ... The Magpies had another antagonist to contend with – themselves. Though the clanger count was on even terms, the Hawks scored nine of their opening 10 goals from turnovers, and feasted on the Pies’ inability to protect the ball beyond the halfway point of the ground. Collingwood’s issues quickly compounded in the third term, and when Hawthorn booted four of quarter’s first five goals, the Hawks looked like a side playing on the spirit of Clarkson’s premiership teams of the past.

A MUCH-IMPROVED Hawthorn has continued its recent dominance of Collingwood and all but ensured it will avoid the wooden spoon this season with a 19-point upset victory over the Magpies at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. The impressive 15.7 (97) to 12.6 (78) triumph moves Hawthorn in front of Collingwood and up to 15th on the ladder as it continues its end of season resurgence under outgoing mentor and four-time premiership winning coach Alastair Clarkson. It was an eight-goal-to-three opening half that helped set the Hawks on their way, with much of the same after half-time as they made it 13 wins from their last 15 matches against Collingwood. The Pies did send a minor scare through the Hawthorn camp when they closed to within 19 points with seven minutes remaining in the contest, but it was too little too late as the Hawks held on for a much-deserved victory.

Collingwood gave its fans a delicious taste of the future and West Coast an anxious next three weeks on the back of a 45-point smashing. The Pies’ faster and braver ball use under Robert Harvey was on full show, owning the corridor and opening up their forward 50, taking 18 marks inside 50. Collingwood was able to control the ball and showed West Coast up with its superior work rate around the ground on their way to 155 uncontested marks. ... Collingwood got their customary jump on the Eagles in the first quarter on the back of brave and precise ball movement. The Pies looked inside whenever they could, but importantly didn’t use the corridor for the sake of it. Stand-in skipper Steele Sidebottom, Jamie Elliott, Will Hoskin-Elliott kicked goals before Jack Ginnivan nailed a 50-metre bomb for the first goals of his career to give Collingwood a 21-point quarter-time lead. If Pies supporters thought they were in dreamland in the first quarter they hadn’t seen anything yet. Collingwood played its best footy of the season during a six goal to one second term.

Collingwood has delivered a mightily comprehensive win against the odds, upsetting a horrendously poor West Coast side to place further doubts on the Eagles’ finals credentials. In a remarkable result, the young Magpies kicked the first eight goals of the game and took a whopping 155 uncontested marks to West Coast’s 93 to obliterate Adam Simpson’s side. Despite four late goals to the Eagles, the Magpies were never fazed as they ran out 45-point winners, 14.6 (90) to 6.9 (45). ...  As bad as the Eagles were, this was arguably the most thrilling Collingwood performance of 2021 so far. We’d seen glimpses in recent weeks of a new, faster style under caretaker coach Robert Harvey. On Saturday afternoon, Pies fans saw it for four quarters – and it was brilliant. Yes West Coast’s pressure was deplorable and allowed the Pies to play with great freedom. But with ball in hand, the Pies played with terrific dash and dare, which translated onto the scoreboard.

Collingwood have torn apart West Coast at the MCG, kicking 10 goals to one in the opening half to embarrass the Eagles once again away from home in a performance by the visitors that lacked care and effort. The Magpies did everything that the Eagles did not, putting pressure on the opposition when they didn’t have the ball and moving the ball quickly with sharp kicks and handballs when they did win possession, ending with 12 individual goalkickers in the 45-point win. It was a result that would make candidates for the Magpies’ coaching job double down on their efforts to win the vacant post. The half-time margin was an indictment on the Eagles as it was premiership skipper Shannon Hurn’s 300th game – the first Eagle to reach the milestone – but it was not out of character given their 90 point-plus defeats against Geelong and Sydney earlier in the year. This time Collingwood scored 90 points to double the Eagles’ final score.

COLLINGWOOD has delivered a stunning blow to West Coast’s finals hopes with an incredible 45-point victory at the MCG on Saturday. In premiership captain Shannon Hurn’s 300th game, the Eagles barely offered a yelp, conceding the first eight goals of the game before eventually going down 14.6 (90) to 6.9 (45). Acting captain Steele Sidebottom led from the front with 33 disposals and a goal, while Jordan De Goey also impressed with 34 touches and a game-high 518 metres gained.

Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury fears he has broken his leg after coming off injured in the 28-point loss to Port Adelaide on Friday night. Pendlebury limped from the field during the first quarter with what the club said was a lower leg injury then was substituted at quarter-time. The 33-year-old told ABC radio post-game he believed it might be broken because it felt a little similar to the pain he experienced when he fractured it previously. Pendlebury said he was really sore around the bone in the middle of his leg and the muscle around that was quite tight. “I’ve broken my leg before and it’s a little bit similar to the pain I experienced with that,” he said on ABC Radio. “It’s really sore around the bone and the middle of my leg and the leg muscle around that is really tight. I tried to run and kick and it didn’t feel right.”.

Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury fears he may have suffered a broken leg during his side’s clash with Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium. The 33-year-old was subbed out of Friday night’s game at quarter-time after landing awkwardly during a first-term tackle. Pendlebury limped off the ground during the first quarter and went straight down to the rooms to be further assessed by the Collingwood medical staff. After emerging from the rooms, he attempted to prove his fitness by doing some run-throughs along the boundary line. But he failed in his attempts to be re-introduced into the match. Collingwood confirmed Pendlebury had suffered a knock to the lower leg just above the ankle. Speaking to ABC Sport after the match, Pendlebury said the setback felt similar to an incident he suffered a decade ago. “I’ve broken my leg before and it was a little bit similar to the pain I experienced with that,” Pendlebury told ABC Sport, as reported by broadcaster Corbin Middlemas on Twitter. “It’s really sore around the bone in the middle of my leg and the muscle around that as well is really tight. I tried to run or kick and it didn’t feel right. Hopefully it’s not broken, but we’ll get a scan tomorrow and see.”

Port Adelaide celebrated club legend Travis Boak’s landmark 300th match in style after overcoming a valiant challenge from Collingwood to win by 28 points at Marvel Stadium. The Magpies were hard-at-it early and showed splashes of spark in the second half but were unable to completely shake off the loss of captain Scott Pendlebury in the opening term. Pendlebury suffered a lower leg knock while being dragged down from behind by Willem Drew and was substituted out of the contest at quarter-time. Pendlebury’s long-time midfield rival Boak would never have envisaged an empty Marvel Stadium for a “home” match being the way he reached the milestone, equalling Kane Cornes’ AFL club record.

COLLINGWOOD coach Robert Harvey says the decision to use tall forward Mason Cox as the medical substitute didn't hurt his team's ability to run out Friday night's clash against Port Adelaide. The Magpies lost captain Scott Pendlebury to a lower leg injury in the first quarter of the 28-point loss at Marvel Stadium, with the star midfielder comparing the pain of his injury to a broken leg in a post-match interview. Harvey said the club would wait on scans before declaring the extent of the injury and Pendlebury had been moving around well post-match. The coach said he was happy with how his team had covered the midfielder's loss and the addition of another tall forward did not affect the Magpies' ability to run out the game. "We were a really young team tonight and we didn't have a lot in reserve in regard to experienced players," Harvey said when asked if he was happy with the decision to select Cox as the medical sub. "I know Mason was quieter and could have done more, but in the end I thought we were really positive in how we entered the ball inside 50. Through where we're at I thought that was the best call and that's the way we went. We looked like we were running on top of the ground, so I didn't think that was an issue."

Carlton shrugged off the loss of star skipper Patrick Cripps to claim bragging rights over arch rivals Collingwood at the MCG. The Blues kept their slim final hopes alive as they staged a fourth-quarter comeback to down the Pies by 29 points on Sunday. Carlton didn’t hit the front for the first time until midway through the final term as they stormed home with six final quarter goals.

Carlton’s slim finals hopes are still alive, thanks to a stunning final-quarter blitz and herculean performance from Sam Walsh in a come-from-behind win over Collingwood. The Magpies got the fast start on the Blues, kicking the first three goals of the game then extending their lead to 24 points halfway through the second term. But the Blues got on top around the stoppages then put the foot down in the fourth quarter, kicking 6.4 to 0.3 and running out 29-point winners, 13.13 (91) to 9.8 (62).

In front of zero fans at the MCG on Sunday, Carlton had played largely uninspiring football for three quarters, trailing by four goals during time-on of the second quarter and 20 points midway through the third term. But the Blues found something from that point onwards ... The match did not reach any great heights during the first half, but the Pies had been the better side. They were cleaner around goal, with first-year utility Ollie Henry finding all too much and bobbing up with three majors before the long break. ... The Pies had more of the footy, and the Blues’ pressure was lacking, until the latter part of the second term when they belatedly lifted a notch to trim the gap to within two goals at half-time.

Jordan De Goey's 31 disposals and 12 marks, along with Chris Mayne's 26 touches and 10 grabs, had initially put Collingwood in a position of control, but interim coach Robert Harvey watched as his side's lead dissipated over the course of the game. It had hardly been the most inspiring start regardless, with both sides plagued by woeful attacking inefficiency in its early stages. It took teenage forward Ollie Henry, previously without an AFL goal, to finally deliver a pair of pinpoint shots and help open a 17-point Collingwood lead in the first term.

The finals may be out of reach but Collingwood proved they could be a real thorn in the side of those above them after producing a brilliant final term to topple the flagging premiers. ... seven consecutive goals from the resurgent Magpies across the third and fourth quarters sent sparks flying all over Richmond’s train tracks, causing the Tigers’ season to crash head-on into the side of a mountain. Collingwood actually controlled the ball for most of the game, finishing with far more disposals (431-338) and marks (118-61), but due to poor ball use and skill errors, struggled to finish off their good work in the first three quarters, managing only six goals from 41 inside 50s compared to the far more efficient Richmond’s 10 from 38. But to the Magpies’ credit, they kept coming, even after they seemingly shooting themselves in the foot with Jack Crisp, Jordan De Goey and Brody Mihocek (twice) all missing gettable shots in the third quarter.

Collingwood has sent Richmond’s finals chances into peril after completing a stunning comeback win at the MCG on Sunday night. ... It marked Collingwood’s fifth win for the season and first under caretaker coach Robert Harvey — who had lost their last two games since Nathan Buckley’s resignation. ... Trailing by 28 points halfway through the third term, Collingwood booted seven-straight goals, including eight of the last nine of the match, to turn it on its head and run out winners. It was a stunning turnaround from the black and white to send Richmond’s finals hopes in tatters – who now sit 12th on the ladder. The Magpies dominated the fourth quarter – winning disposals (+56), contested possessions (+14) and most importantly the result on the scoreboard (7.2.44 to 1.2.8).

The king is dead. Long live the king. If Richmond’s premiership hopes looked shaky after they were overrun late by West Coast, further diminished after they were strangled by St Kilda, and threadbare after being upset by Gold Coast, then they are as good as gone after coughing up a 29-point third-quarter lead against the lowly Collingwood at the MCG on Sunday, in doing so handing Magpies caretaker coach Robert Harvey his first victory since replacing Nathan Buckley.

COLLINGWOOD has charged home against a fading Richmond, snatching a 16-point win to put the back-to-back premiers' finals hopes in serious doubt. The Pies were 20 points adrift at the final break of an injury-ravaged Richmond side that had looked to be on the improve, but took advantage of its disposal dominance to slam home seven last-quarter goals. ... On numerous occasions in the first three quarters Richmond looked like it was going to accelerate in a quest to rebuild its wobbly percentage, but Collingwood always came through with a crucial goal or two to stop the rot. It set them up perfectly for a ferocious final quarter, which should set the tail end of its season up beautifully.

St Kilda’s unlikely bid for finals footy this year has a pulse after they survived a major final-quarter scare against Collingwood at the MCG on Sunday. After only managing three goals in the opening three quarters, and falling 49 points behind, the Magpies’ woke up in spectacular fashion to kick the final six majors of the game to trim the margin to eight points. But Collingwood left their run too late, and the Saints held on for a nine-point win after being the better side for the majority of the day.

St Kilda has survived an incredible late scare to register an unconvincing win over a Collingwood side that, ultimately, left too little too late. ... the Saints, who led by as much as 49 points late in the third term, cost themselves significant percentage in the final quarter as the Pies finished with a rush, which included kicking the last six goals of the game unanswered. In a familiar tale of their 2021 campaign – both before and after Nathan Buckley – the Pies only kicked three goals from the first three quarters as they struggled to hit the scoreboard and move the ball with fluidity. Then the six-goal avalanche came, which seemingly was only a result of the Pies showing more intensity at the contest then being more prepared to move the ball quickly when they moved it to the outside. The change in approach frustrated former Magpie Brian Taylor. “Why is it now that they’ve got the freedom to go and play quick?” the Coleman medallist asked on Channel 7. “Why couldn’t this have been earlier?”

Conventional wisdom suggests that installing a caretaker coach releases the shackles and allows a team’s players to play with greater freedom and dare. On the evidence of the first three quarters from a bleak Sunday afternoon at the MCG, Robert Harvey is not a subscriber to conventional wisdom. Rarely can a Collingwood side have played as dishearteningly for its supporters as the Magpies did until the final change on Sunday. And then, out of nowhere, came a flood of goals. From 49 points down to St Kilda late in the third term, the Pies played direct and dominant footy. When Mason Cox, a non-factor for most of the game, kicked his first major deep in the final term, the Pies trailed by just eight with more than two minutes remaining before losing by nine points. It was a run that left more questions than answers. Where had that been? The back half of a season like the one the Pies are enduring should be laden with enticing tastes of a sweet future to come, but until the last quarter there was barely a redeeming feature from this performance. Collingwood were outdone at the contest while playing grim, error-riddled football, thrashed by a St Kilda side that will somehow end the round only half a game and percentage outside the top eight.

St Kilda did what it had to against a Collingwood line-up that kicked one goal in the first half before storming home to boot five (to none) in the last quarter and give Brett Ratten's side a fright ... Taylor Adams (34 disposals) and Jordan De Goey (32 disposals, 1.2) were Collingwood's best in what was an uninspiring showing until its final-term flurry.

What The Pies Caretaker Coach Said

“We started really well and finished really well and had some inconsistent moments in the middle patch, in the second and third quarters. I thought from the point of view of what we asked the players for before the game their intent was good around what we wanted to do. We just fell into a few patterns where we couldn’t quite get out of that affected our ability to score and also getting scored against. ... As we go forward it’s about finding that balance in our game. To score six goals from the back half is an improvement for us. We haven’t done that for a while. ... We want our players to express themselves and in the last quarter the gloves came off and we were bolder and that’s what we want to see."
- Robert Harvey

Media Clippings

Fremantle ruined Robert Harvey’s first game in charge of Collingwood, holding on for a nailbiting win at Marvel Stadium. Harvey’s jump into the Collingwood coaching hot seat started perfectly as the Pies kicked the first two goals of the match with slick and direct ball movement. But after Fremantle took control of the game, a late Collingwood fightback was hampered by one of the worst decisions of the season which completely stopped the Pies’ momentum. Brayden Maynard was penalised for front-on contact after Liam Henry pushed off the Collingwood defender, and an ensuing 50m penalty following Maynard’s remonstrations — labelled “unforgivable” by Brisbane legend Jonathan Brown on Fox Footy — ensured Fremantle kicked the unlikeliest of steadying goals.

Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard has been criticised for an “unforgivable” error which “turned” the game in his side’s close loss to Fremantle. Maynard was left frustrated when the umpire determined he had given away a free kick for front-on contact, as he went in without his eyes on the ball, even though the contact was initiated by Fremantle’s Liam Henry. The Magpie took some time to give the ball back to Henry, in fact waiting until he saw a replay of the incident on the Marvel Stadium scoreboard, and then delivered some “choice words” to the umpire. That saw Maynard pinged for a 50-metre penalty which put Henry at the top of the goalsquare, kicking a simple goal which saw the Dockers reclaim the lead midway through the fourth quarter.

The Dockers looked in trouble when Brodie Grundy, who was best on ground, put the Magpies in front with seven minutes remaining after they removed the brakes to charge home and kick the first three goals of the final quarter. However their momentum stalled when a free kick and subsequent 50-metre penalty was paid against Magpies’ defender Brayden Maynard for front on contact against the Dockers’ Liam Henry midway through the final quarter. Collingwood supporters were entitled to be outraged at the decision as Henry made contact with Maynard rather than the other way around but the passionate defender then appeared to concede the goal when the umpire didn’t appreciate the feedback and awarded a 50-metre penalty against him.

"I've still got a lot of life to live, and I've still got passions to chase. Collingwood will always be a passion and I always want to see it – as an organisation and the people in it – prosper and I'll be supporting from afar. There's a little bit of open space and blue sky, it's just what you fill it with. The club goes into the bye and it's a good feeling to go into the bye with. They'll come out the other side and 'Harves' (Assistant coach Robert Harvey) will take the reins and continue on its path. For me, I'll go in at some stage this week when no one's around and clear the office and consider what my next step is." - Nathan Buckley

Media Clippings

Nathan Buckley’s 218-game career as Collingwood coach has ended on a massive high note with his Magpies surviving a late surge to topple the ladder-leading Melbourne by 17 points in a Queen’s Birthday stunner at the SCG. After controlling proceedings for most of the day, Collingwood got out to a 20-point lead early in the final quarter. However, Melbourne strung together four scoring shots in a row late in the game, but luckily for the Pies, only one of them was a goal, to Ed Langdon. And after Brayden Maynard took a match-saving mark deep in defence with less than a minute to go, the ensuing transition ended up with club stalwart Steele Sidebottom, who fittingly iced the cake for Buckley with a goal after the siren.

COLLINGWOOD has seen off outgoing coach Nathan Buckley in the best way possible, defeating premiership favourites Melbourne by 17 points. The Pies showed the dash and dare that has been missing on so many occasions this year in the 9.9 (63) to 11.14 (80) win at the SCG against a disappointing Dees side. ... Collingwood had a clear plan to avoid long and high kicks inside 50, instead looking for short options or scything kicks into attack. The Pies' pressure inside 50 was immense once the ball hit the deck, laying 16 tackles.

Collingwood has written a fairytale finish to club great Nathan Buckley’s career in black and white, upsetting ladder leaders Melbourne by 17 points in his final game as coach. With Buckley departing the club following the Queen‘s Birthday blockbuster, many expected the Magpies (4-9) to lift, but not enough to challenge the almost untouchable Demons (11-2). Instead, they impressed from the opening bounce, leading by 16 points at halftime and then after holding a slender three-quarter-time lead, ran away from their fancied rivals.

“We’ve missed his (Jamie Elliott) talent and smarts in front of the ball and to be able to have that sort of impact coming back is a credit to him. Collingwood has pulled off a daring smash-and-grab border raid, Jamie Elliott starring with six goals in a surprise five-point win over the wasteful Crows at Adelaide Oval. The Magpies were in South Australia for just under 12 hours on Saturday after being granted a much-debated exemption by SA Health, and the interlopers made the most of their opportunity, scoring a 12.6 (78) to 10.13 (73) win. With injured stars Brodie Grundy and Taylor Adams dropping out of the side that lost to Geelong, the 16th-placed Pies were given little chance of victory by many, but stunned the home side to score their third win of the season. In his first game back from a broken leg suffered in round two, Elliott burst out of the blocks with four goals in the first quarter and made it a career-high bag of six when he kicked the winner with five minutes left in the entertaining contest.

A blistering performance from livewire forward Jamie Elliott has helped Collingwood record a thrilling interstate win over Adelaide by five points on Saturday. Elliott – in his first game back from a fractured leg suffered in round 2 – kicked a career-high six goals, including five in the first half, to set up the 12.6 (78) to 10.13 (73) victory. Jack Crisp was also monumental for the Pies, finishing with 31 disposals and nine marks, while Rory Laird (40 disposals) and Paul Seedsman (27 touches and two goals) starred for the Crows. ... Collingwood was able to hold on during the final stages to notch its first interstate win for the season.

Collingwood has sealed its third win of the season, defeating the Crows 12.6 (78) to 10.13 (73) at the Adelaide Oval after a pulsating final term tussle. The Pies led by 23 points heading into quarter-time but were quickly reigned in by a potent yet inaccurate Crows outfit, before an intense final term saw a number of lead changes and the visitors eventually hold on for the win. It snaps a three-game losing streak for the Pies, who’ll face ladder-leaders Melbourne at the SCG in Round 13, while the Crows are scheduled to play St Kilda at Cazaly’s Stadium. ...  Collingwood may have lost Brodie Grundy and Taylor Adams to injury during the week but were boosted by the return of Jamie Elliott. For a team that struggles so much to score, Elliott’s injection of offensive flare was noticeable from early in the contest, booting five first-half goals, including four in the first quarter. The sharpshooter finished with a career-best six goals and was so hot early that he caused Crows coach Matthew Nicks to move Jake Kelly onto him.

We were 16 inside-50s to 14 with eight minutes to go in the second quarter, we had more opportunity to score than the opposition and we hadn’t got a goal on the board and they had three or four. There are some elements we need to work on but we’re getting games [into players]. Over the last three or four weeks I think we’re tracking in the right direction. We’re playing some pretty good sides and we’ve been very competitive. If we keep focusing on working together and finding our best, the wins will come.” - Nathan Buckley

    Media Clippings

A third-quarter injury to Collingwood’s best player has rubbed salt into the wound of a third-straight loss that has plunged the Magpies’ season further into the mire. Grundy was contesting a mark on centre-wing when he went down with what looked to be a right shoulder injury but was, in fact, an injury to his neck. He was subbed out halfway through the quarter and later taken to hospital. The severity of the injury was unknown, but it looks likely to keep the All-Australian ruckman out for at least next week. ... The injury came after Grundy, ironically, had delivered the Pies first goal of the match — in the first minute of the third-quarter — the first time in 116 years Collingwood had failed to kick a goal in the first half at the MCG.Saturday’s opening half was also the second time in three weeks the Magpies have gone back-to-back quarters without registering a major.

A picture might be able to paint 1000 words, but the MCG scoreboard certainly couldn't on Saturday. On the face of it, Collingwood's 10-point loss to Geelong might not have been so bad. Dig a little deeper, though, and this was another defining day in an already turbulent Magpies season. Collingwood endured a goalless first half for the first time since 2005 at the MCG, mustering a measly one major to the final change. Only a late flourish, where the Pies added a host of junk-time goals, would lessen the damage by the final siren. Instead, they had the Cats to thank for the fact the 8.13 (61) to 6.15 (51) scoreline wasn't far more dramatic. Last year's Grand Finalists weren't necessarily firing on all cylinders, but barely needed to escape second gear to cruise to a comfortable four points. A neck injury to dual Collingwood best and fairest Brodie Grundy, which forced the two-time All-Australian to be substituted out of the match midway through the third quarter, compounded issues for the Magpies.

Star Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy has been taken to hospital for scans and further assessment on a neck injury he sustained during his side’s loss to Geelong on Saturday. Grundy was competing in a marking contest with Cats ruckman Rhys Stanley in the third term before his head was wrenched back mid-air and he landed awkwardly on his right forearm. The dual All-Australian was immediately taken down into the rooms for further assessment. Soon afterwards, Collingwood confirmed Grundy had been subbed out of the game, with Finlay Macrae replacing him. It was initially feared Grundy had hurt his AC joint, but the Pies confirmed to Fox Footy at three quarter-time he’d sustained a neck injury. As play continued in the final quarter at the MCG, Grundy was taken to hospital for precautionary scans with the club concerned he’d pinched a nerve in his neck.

Port Adelaide staged a stunning final quarter fightback to hand Collingwood its worst start to a season in more than 20 years with a nailbiting one-point win. The Power came to life in the last term at the MCG on Sunday, kicking four fourth-quarter goals to overturn a 13 point deficit at the final change. The Pies have won only two of their first 10 games in 2021 – their worst start to a season since 1999 when they finished the year in last place with only four wins. A tumultuous week off the field, with the resignation of billionaire vice-president Alex Waislitz and members threatening to force an extraordinary general meeting, the Pies fought hard all day but two late goals weren’t enough to get them over the line.Pressure continues to mount on coach Nathan Buckley as the Magpies gave up four straight goals to start the final term.

PORT Adelaide has survived a massive scare to stay in touch with the top four with a thrilling one-point come-from-behind victory over a brave Collingwood at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. Despite being second-best for the majority of the contest and trailing until time on in the final term, Ken Hinkley's side turned the game its way during a tight fourth quarter to register an 8.11 (59) to 8.10 (58) win. It was a four-goal-to-two final stanza that gave Port Adelaide the impetus, with Sam Powell-Pepper, Robbie Gray, Travis Boak and Charlie Dixon instrumental in the late turnaround that swung the momentum and gave the visitors their first lead of the afternoon.

Collingwood have coughed up a golden opportunity to turn their season around, giving up a 13-point three-quarter-time lead to fall short by the narrowest of margins against Port Adelaide at the MCG on Sunday. The Pies were on the verge of a defining win over the premiership-contending Power before the visitors kicked four consecutive final-quarter goals to take a 13-point lead of their own. Jordan De Goey, who had just four touches to three-quarter time, was injected into the centre bounce late to give the Magpies a different look, and when youngsters Beau McCreery (three goals) and Cam Poulter kicked back-to-back goals late, just one point separated the two sides. But in the end, the Power held on for a much-needed one-point win, moving to 7-3 to keep their top-four ambitions well and truly in tact.

“We came here to win, and we felt like we had the plan to do so. And I think it probably showed early in the game that what we put in place was going to trouble Sydney. The fact that they only scored 10 goals in the end [shows] defensively we held up for the most part. We’re disappointed for not being able to stick at it and not being able to put enough chains together to score or get field position after quarter-time. The reality is we had some players that dropped away and that’s going to happen at times, especially with young boys.”

A Sydney surge from after quarter time has solidified the Swans place inside the AFL’s top eight and compounded Collingwood’s woes in season 2021 as they romped home to win by 30 points at the SCG. After surprising the SCG faithful with a four goal to one first term, courtesy of a double to Jordan De Goey, Collingwood would become the first team this season to endure two goalless quarters – the second and third - as the Swans piled on ten majors to one over the remainder of the contest.

The Collingwood faithful have slammed their side’s performance against Sydney, declaring the Magpies’ effort “utterly embarrassing”, “woeful” and a “horror show”. After surprising the SCG with a four goals to one first term, courtesy of a double to Jordan De Goey, Collingwood would become the first team this season to endure two goalless quarters — the second and third — as the Swans piled on 10 majors to one over the remainder of the contest. The wheels fell off spectacularly after quarter time for Nathan Buckley’s troops, who managed a total of just four points across the second and third terms. The Swans, meanwhile, helped themselves to six unanswered goals in a 37-point turnaround between the first and third breaks. Collingwood kicked just one goal after quarter time, ensuring any pressure eased by last week’s win has been firmly forced back onto Buckley’s shoulders.

Sydney have heaped more misery upon struggling Collingwood, overcoming a lacklustre start to notch an important 30-point win on Saturday. Plagued by injuries, a run of bad form and murmurs of a pending boardroom coup, the Magpies came out with a point to prove at the SCG, scoring three of the first four goals – including two from under-fire star Jordan De Goey – to lead by 18 points at quarter-time. But they were held to just two behinds in the middle quarters and after ex-Swan Darcy Cameron’s 24th-minute set shot, the Pies kicked just one more goal for the remainder of the afternoon.

“When you are a Collingwood person ( Jordan De Goey), when things are going either well or bad, they get pushed to the extremities and when you are a character within that organisation you get scrutinised really heavily, you get put on a pedestal for your good performances and you get kicked in the guts for your poor ones. Jordy is in the mix, our expectations internally are that he continues to work for his teammates and tries to play his role to the best of his capacity and brings his strengths to the fore. We’ll challenge the professional while supporting the person and that is not what seems to happen externally.” – Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley

    Media Clippings

The AFL’s new concussion protocols are set for their fiercest test yet with Collingwood set to ask the league to clear Jordan Roughead and Nathan Murphy to play in Round 9. Both players were withdrawn from Saturday’s much needed win over North Melbourne by club medicos with concussion. League rules stipulate they must now miss at least 12 days, which would rule both players out for next Saturday’s away clash with Sydney. But the Magpies are set to investigate whether they can be granted exemptions given they both passed their tests.

AN ELECTRIC performance from Jordan De Goey has helped Collingwood snap a five-game losing streak with an 18-point win over a spirited North Melbourne outfit on Saturday. After a poor performance against the Suns last week, De Goey returned to form with 6.3 and 17 touches in the 14.10 (94) to 11.10 (76) win. Darcy Moore was moved back into defence and starred with 26 disposals and 17 marks, while Brayden Maynard also impressed down back with 32 disposals

Collingwood forward Jordan De Goey has led the Magpies to a much-needed victory over the winless North Melbourne, kicking six goals in a performance that will relieve some pressure on the under-fire club. The 25-year-old received strong feedback about his performance after last week’s loss to the Suns but he appeared switched on from the start, kicking a goal in the first minute after Steele Sidebottom – in his 250th game – hit De Goey on the chest. He kicked four first-half goals as the Magpies established a match-winning lead late in the second quarter, with his fourth goal starting a run of four unanswered goals from the Magpies. Collingwood then withstood a fierce and worrying third-quarter comeback from the Kangaroos, who kicked the first four goals in the second half to drag the margin back to six points.

    The Mercury - Mick Malthouse

Collingwood will be hounded by all sorts of suggestions and opinions from the media, key outside figures, and supporter groups in the coming weeks, regardless of yesterday’s result, and the club could find itself in a very dark place very quickly if the current board doesn’t receive full support from all. I fear that would drag them back to the dark ages of infighting and feuding. ... Collingwood is struggling on the field. It has climbed the ladder and unfortunately for the supporters also dropped a few rungs. ... Collingwood as a team is far better than second bottom on the ladder. With 14 games to go the Pies could conceivably win 60-70 per cent of those which would give them a fair look at just outside the top eight. But I wonder whether there is enough harmony within the group, a trust without compromise, to stay the course.
