Buckley: What To Do?

Collingwood News

Mason Cox
C
harged with striking Daniel Howe, Hawthorn, during the third quarter of the Round One match between Collingwood and Hawthorn, played at the MCG on Saturday March 24, 2018.
In summary, the offence is judged as a one-match sanction without appearing before the Tribunal.
Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Hawthorn Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct with low impact to the head. The incident was classified as a one-match sanction.

Brayden Maynard
Charged with staging during the fourth quarter of the Round One match between Collingwood and Hawthorn, played at the MCG on Saturday March 24, 2018.
In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.
A first offence for staging is a $1500 sanction. The player can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.
Collingwood is still contemplating how to rejig its forward line in the absence of the suspended Mason Cox for Saturday's clash against Greater Western Sydney at the MCG.
The Magpies will be forced to make at least two changes to their side, with Cox to accept his one-match ban for striking Hawthorn's Daniel Howe, and forward Josh Smith to miss up to a month with a hamstring injury.
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said Cox would regain his place in the side once he serves his suspension, while also hinting the coaching staff would be loathe to return Darcy Moore to the forward line after just one week.
"We'll have discussions around whether we replace tall for tall or look at a different structure going up against a different opposition," Buckley said.
"If Mason was missing a month it would change the consideration for us, but without giving away much to the opposition that we're about to face, we're pretty keen to maintain a back seven as consistently as we possibly can to give them a chance to grow and evolve together.
"Having said that, like we did on the weekend, we could try to change things to get the result."
Alex Fasolo, who has overcome a shoulder injury, will need another week in the VFL before being considered for senior selection, said Buckley.

The Pies coach nominated Chris Mayne, Jarryd Blair, Tim Broomhead and Brayden Sier as possible inclusions against the Giants.
Mayne, who has not played at senior level since round three, 2017, gathered 35 disposals in a VFL practice match against Box Hill last Friday.
The former Fremantle forward was traded to Collingwood at the end of 2016 on a four-year deal reportedly worth up to $2 million.
"He had 35 touches on the weekend, not that touches are everything," Buckley said in a joking reference to Hawk Tom Mitchell's disposal count of 54 against the Pies last Saturday.
"He had a really good impact and he had a really solid pre-season, and I think he's bounced off a pretty disappointing year last year with a first-class attitude which we know he's always had.
"He's covering the ground better; he's put himself in the frame."
Buckley said Moore was long-term option in defence for the Magpies in 2018 after training in the back half over the summer.
Moore was shifted into attack in the second half as the Magpies tried to mount a comeback in Saturday's night 34-point loss to Hawthorn.
"We think it'll have us playing our best footy this year, that's why we've planned for it, and we really don't have enough sample size to make an alternate judgment on that yet," Buckley said.

Collingwood prime mover Dayne Beams is free to take on Gold Coast after being cleared of striking Carlton's Ed Curnow during the third quarter of Sunday's 15-point win.
Beams was reported on the night by a field umpire but the AFL's Match Review Panel's assessment of the incident found that the 2012 Copeland Trophy winner has no case to answer.
The 24-year-old's input will be crucial to Collingwood's chances of beating Gold Coast on its own turf.
He averages 33.00 disposals per game against the Suns.

The AFL's Match Review Panel released the following assessment of the Beams-Curnow incident:
The match day report laid against Collingwood’s Dayne Beams for striking Carlton’s Ed Curnow was assessed. After speaking to the umpire that laid the match-day report, receiving a medical report from the Carlton Football Club and reviewing all available footage, it was determined the force used in the contact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Two other incidents from the night were also assessed by the Match Review Panel:
Mitch Robinson, Carlton, has been charged with a Level Three Striking Offence (225 points, two-match sanction) for striking Taylor Adams, Collingwood, during the first quarter of the Round 15 match between Carlton and Collingwood, played at the MCG on Sunday June 29, 2014.
In summary, due to his previous poor record, his two-match sanction must remain at two games, even with an early plea.
Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Collingwood Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three Offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of 68.75 demerit points, increasing the penalty to 293.75 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 220.31 points and a two-match sanction.
Contact between Carlton’s Dale Thomas and Collingwood’s Dane Swan from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was required.

Sidebottom Rough Conduct Charge

Collingwood News

Steele Sidebottom collides with Maverick Weller during the opening minute of Friday night's 86-point win over St Kilda.
Collingwood midfielder Steele Sidebottom has been charged with rough conduct following his clash with St Kilda’s Maverick Weller during the opening minute of Friday night’s 86-point win.
The AFL's Match Review Panel has suspended Sidebottom for four games. He can reduced the length of his suspension to three matches with an early plea.
It will be the first block of matches Sidebottom has missed this season.
In fact, it will be the first time he has missed a match since round 18, 2012. He has missed just two of Collingwood's 112 games since the 2009 Qualifying Final.
The AFL's Match Review Panel released the following assessment of the Sidebottom-Weller incident:
"Steele Sidebottom, Collingwood, has been charged with a Level Four Engaging in Rough Conduct Offence (425 points, four-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Maverick Weller, St Kilda, during the first quarter of the Round 11 match between St Kilda and Collingwood, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday May 30, 2014.
In summary, he can accept a three-match sanction with an early plea.
Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the St Kilda Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), high impact (three points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of seven activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Four Offence, drawing 425 demerit points and a four-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 318.75 demerit points and three-match sanction."

STOP PRESS

REAL FOOTY

Collingwood has accepted the three-match ban handed down by the match review panel to midfielder Steele Sidebottom.
Sidebottom risked an additional week on the sidelines had he chosen to contest the decision, but the Magpies chose not to challenge the sanctions, meaning that Sidebottom will miss matches against Melbourne, the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn.
Sidebottom was charged with rough conduct for his bump on St Kilda tagger Maverick Weller which led to Weller being subbed out of the game between the Saints and Magpies on Friday night.
The MRP assessed the collision as reckless, "high" impact and "high" contact.
Sidebottom was surprisingly frank about the incident before the match review panel's verdict, saying he had apologised to Weller and would accept his penalty "on the chin".
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said the bump was “unlucky” and what Sidebottom learns from the incident is up to him.
“First and foremost Steele’s a ball player and the ball bounced up in front of his eyes and he jumped up to get it and the ball was gone and he didn't know what to do after that, so he was caught in a position, that every footballer gets caught in at times,” he said.
Because the MRP considers severity of injury, not just whether an incident was accidental or intentional, it was enough to send the midfielder off for weeks, Buckley said.
“We’re disappointed we’re going to miss out on one of our best players over the next three weeks but it’s an opportunity for another. I don’t know what Steele learns from that other than he probably could have made a different decision at the time.”

It resulted in a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a level three offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two match suspension. An early plea reduced the sanction by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one match sanction.
Geelong may also be without one of its star defenders when it takes to the field on Saturday night.
Triple premiership star James Kelly will contest a two match suspension at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night. Kelly was charged with engaging in rough conduct against Essendon's Brendon Goddard in Geelong's win on Friday night.
The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). It is a total of five activation points which results in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two game suspension.
Kelly has an existing bad record (a one match suspension) within the last two years and 64.06 demerit points carried over which increases the penalty to 289.06 points and a two match ban.
