Magpies move closer to playing finals following frenetic win over Blues

Daily Telegraph
“We were really looking forward to the contest and there’s obviously a bit of spark that it’s a Carlton-Collingwood game. I was hearing from mates of mine I didn’t even know barracked for Carlton over the last couple of days and they were looking forward to the game and thought they were going to go well. I’ll be getting back to them in the next 24 hours. That was the strongest performance we’ve put together over the last five or six weeks and we want to see that continue. ... We’ve always had that confidence in the way we played. We’ve had to really grind out the last five or six weeks and I think most sides sort of feel like they’re in that position. Pretty footy will get you so far, but really it’s that consistency of being able to stay in shape and win contested ball and defend well that’s going to keep you in games. There’s been a fair bit of scrutiny on the way we’ve gone about the last five or six weeks and outside of the West Coast and Melbourne games we’ve been fairly competitive. We’ve used 39 players so we’ve gone to the depth of our squad.” - Nathan Buckley

The Game

Pies beat the Blues to pull ahead in finals race

The Age
A rivalry, old, with a venue, new. And Carlton’s finals hopes are on borrowed time after Collingwood finished over the top of the Blues. That was the story from the Gabba on Sunday as the Magpies delivered a hammer blow to Carlton’s finals dream with an enthralling 24-point victory over the Blues. Collingwood kept Carlton goal-less in the second half to firmly reinforce their place in the top eight and give senior coach Nathan Buckley extra reason to celebrate his 200th game in charge of the Pies. The Magpies also drew level with Carlton with 127 wins apiece in the storied rivalry – the first time they have been equal with the Blues since 1982 and their 11th win over Carlton in the last 13 meetings between the clubs. Collingwood hit the front early in the fourth term after a rushed behind and after being shaky in front of goal, Jaidyn Stephenson dribbled through a vital goal before Josh Daicos, Brody Mihocek and Mason Cox iced the four points for the fast-finishing Pies. In amongst the goal avalanche, Chris Mayne suffered a heavy knock from Carlton captain Patrick Cripps and was taken from the field in the hands of medical staff.

Collingwood just produced its most stirring win of 2020

Fox Footy
No Adam Treloar, No Steele Sidebottom, No Jordan De Goey, no Jeremy Howe — no worries for Collingwood, which produced one of its most stirring and important wins of 2020 so far. One of the biggest games between traditional rivals Carlton and Collingwood in years lived up to all expectations — but only the Magpies, ultimately, stamped their finals authority. After an arm-wrestle of a first half, the Magpies kicked five goals in the second half and kept the Blues goalless to run out 24-point winners, 10.12 (72) to 7.6 (48). It was Collingwood’s highest score since Round 3. The win saw the Pies leapfrog St Kilda into sixth spot on the AFL ladder. ... Collingwood’s forward line finally clicked, with Jaidyn Stephenson, Josh Thomas, Mason Cox and Brody Mihocek all kicking two goals each.Taylor Adams was inspirational for the Pies, with 16 of his 23 disposals coming during the Magpies’ second-half surge. Adams also had 17 contested possessions, seven clearances and six score involvements.

Collingwood defeats Carlton in a thriller

NEWS.com.au
Carlton has been left staring into the abyss after a second half shut out against the Magpies left their finals campaign hanging by a thread. The Pies came back from nine-points down in the third quarter to secure a 10.12 (72) to 7.6 (48) victory that sees them jump up to sixth on the AFL ladder. The Pies had no Steele Sidebottom, Adam Treloar, Jordan De Goey or Jeremy Howe — but they had no worries in a second half blitz where they kept the Blues goalless. The Blues didn’t kick a goal after Jack Newnes kicked the last goal of the first half at the 26-minute mark of the second term. Collingwood kicked five goals to none in the second half and should have had more if not for some wayward kicking in front of the big sticks. The result may be the end of the Blues’ season — adding a cherry on top of the win for the Magpies, who also levelled the record in the AFL’s oldest rivalry at 127 wins each.

Undermanned Pies put dagger in Blues' finals hopes

AFL
COLLINGWOOD keeps holding the challengers at bay. A campaign that looked to be losing its lustre a fortnight ago has suddenly been steadied with back-to-back wins, with a 24-point victory over Carlton on Sunday satisfying for a number of reasons. The side's brave 10.12 (72) to 7.6 (48) win at the Gabba was a backs-to-the-wall performance full of heart.  Without a number of key players, the Pies rose to the sizeable task laid down by the Blues. But while the manner of the victory was certainly the most pleasing aspect of a result that will take the Pies one step closer to sealing a top-eight berth, putting a dagger in the finals hopes of their arch rivals was undoubtedly just as sweet.

Collingwood beats Carlton by 24 points in Brisbane
to boost AFL finals chances

ABC News
Collingwood has staved off rivals Carlton in a boost for its finals aspirations, winning by 24 points at the Gabba. The 10.12 (72) to 7.6 (48) victory on Sunday came after the Magpies trailed by two points at the final change. It keeps them entrenched in the top eight in sixth position while ensuring the resurgent Blues remain on the outer in 12th place. The goal-kicking duties were shared around by the Magpies, with Mason Cox, Brody Mihocek, Jaidyn Stephenson and Josh Thomas kicking two goals each.

Steele leaves on a high as Pies vow to 'share the load'

Collingwood News
"He'll (vice-captain Steele Sidebottom) get himself back. He's 95 per cent pumped to get back and be with his partner (who is giving birth) and to go through the next couple of weeks. He's five per cent bummed that he's missing what is the next couple of weeks of our campaign. We believe we've been a club that shares the load and steps up to cover for each other as much as we possibly can. We still believe that it's our way forward. It's not about who, it's about how. We need to improve our how. We saw elements of it tonight and we want to continue that. But we've got stiff opposition to come in Carlton in six days' time. We're looking forward to that challenge. That will be without Steele, but we'll have 22 fit blokes ready to go. Hopefully, Steele can find his way back and return for the tail-end of the campaign." - Nathan Buckley

The Game

Pies do enough to shrug off Roos

The Age
Collingwood won't win the premiership playing football as they did on Monday night but by beating North Melbourne they at least enhanced their chances of buying enough time to regain the kind of form that briefly made them flag favourites this year. In a performance that could kindly be described as gritty, Nathan Buckley's side made heavy work of the 17th-placed Kangaroos, trailing early in the third quarter at the Gabba following a Jy Simpkin major. To that point, the Pies had been outgunned in the middle and overly cautious with the ball, repeatedly retreating and giving North the scent of an upset victory. But for all their foibles, Collingwood still had North's measure. Repelled time and time again by the human sponge that is Darcy Moore, the Kangaroos were let down by their sloppy skills which ultimately handed the Pies victory on a silver platter.

Magpies hardly convincing but do enough against North
to hold onto top eight spot — for now

Fox Footy
Collingwood did just enough to keep its spot in the top eight but copped a major scare from North Melbourne at the Gabba, winning by 30 points. The Magpies (7-5-1) looked terrible in the first quarter and a half, turning the ball over constantly and having no rhythm as the lowly Kangaroos (3-10) took a surprising lead. But normality was restored in the second half as the Roos continued to make mistakes and Nathan Buckley’s side capitalised, with Taylor Adams’ excellent season continuing as one of their best. There were no late changes to either side. It was a low-quality start from both teams with frequent missed passes and turnovers, despite perfect conditions at the Gabba, and a miskick deep in defence handed Trent Dumont a set shot and the opening goal for North Melbourne. The Magpies’ major issues connecting to their forward line showed up early. It took until their eighth inside 50 to record a scoring shot – a long-distance behind.

The run home: Who'll be in the eight when it matters?

The Roar - Stirling Coates
7th – Collingwood 7-5-1, 109.1%
Remaining fixture: Blues (Gabba), Lions (Gabba), Suns (Gabba), Power (TBA)
Did themselves an almighty favour last night in downing the Roos and now control their own destiny. The ladder says they have a six-point lead on the chasing pack but, having played 13 games to Melbourne, Carlton and GWS’ 12, it’s really only two – and their run home is tough. That makes their next clash against the Blues the most important match in this rivalry since Carlton killed off Collingwood’s top four chances in 1994. On current form, I can’t back the Pies against Brisbane or Port so, if they fall to the Blues, even going 1-3 with a win against the Suns would leave them at 8-8-1 – highly unlikely to make the eight. Knocking off Carlton puts their arch-rivals well behind the eight ball and, even if they lose to the Lions and Power, gives them enough on the board to see off the others. If they lose? Game on.

Collingwood keeps finals hopes alive with win over North Melbourne

Daily Telegraph
Collingwood has some breathing space within the top eight after a scrappy 30 point win over a determined but at times wayward North Melbourne at the Gabba on Monday night. The game never reached any great heights as a spectacle with only seven goals scored in the first half with both sides constantly turning the ball over. If anything Kangaroos looked a little more poised in the first term but as the game wore on, Collingwood’s experience, led by it’s midfield general Steele Sidebottom and Scott Pendlebury, shifted momentum their way. A four-goal-to-two third term set Collingwood up with 16 point lead at the last change, the biggest of the match at that stage, and on the way to a much needed win following a heavy loss to Melbourne last week. It took some Pendlebury brilliance for Collingwood to break the deadlock with a passage of play in the third quarter that allowed the Pies to regain lead and never look back.

Pies ease past Kangas to keep finals hopes intact

AFL
YOU CAN always bank on Scott Pendlebury. With his Collingwood side struggling to click into gear against an equally wayward North Melbourne on Monday night, the club's talismanic skipper sensed the moment and decided to do it himself. Through sheer force of will, and through his trademark class on the many occasions where he found the footy, Pendlebury spearheaded a second-half surge that inspired a hard-earned 30-point Magpies victory. Pendlebury had 11 disposals and a goal in the third quarter alone, steadying the ship with his composure at the contest as Collingwood wriggled clear of a gallant North Melbourne to win 10. 5 (65) to 5. 5 (35). He finished with 28 touches for the night, duly supported by Taylor Adams (31 disposals, one goal) and Steele Sidebottom (23 disposals, one goal) in a Magpies midfield that eventually bested their younger Kangaroos counterparts. While the victory was by no means convincing, it was important.  The result lifts Collingwood to seventh on the ladder with just four matches remaining in its season, creating a valuable two-game buffer between itself and the ninth-placed Melbourne.

Collingwood consolidates a spot in the top eight with 30-point win
over North Melbourne at the Gabba

ABC News
Collingwood gave their AFL finals hopes a significant boost with a hard-fought 30-point victory over North Melbourne. Neither of the injury-hit sides produced anything like their best football in an untidy contest at the Gabba. But the Magpies' superior work around the contest in the second half saw them pull away to secure a vital 10.5 (65) to 5.5 (35) win on Monday night. It moved them into seventh spot on the ladder, six points clear of Carlton, GWS and Melbourne — the nearest sides outside the top eight — who all have a game in hand. They meet the Blues in a huge clash at the Gabba on Sunday.

Collingwood has made five changes for their round 13 clash against North Melbourne at the Gabba on Monday night.

Levi Greenwood makes his return from an ACL injury, the 31-year-old has put together a near seamless rehab program over the last 11 months.

Greenwood impressed with his inside contested work in a scratch match against Melbourne last week.

The hard midfielder has not played AFL since injuring his knee against Geelong in last year’s qualifying final.

Mason Cox comes back into the Magpies’ line-up for his fifth outing of the season, while defender Jordan Roughead has recovered from a bout of concussion that saw him miss the previous two rounds.

Lively forward Flynn Appleby is set to play his first game of the season, the 21-year-old has been knocking on the door with impressive form up forward in the club’s scratch matches.

Veteran Chris Mayne comes in for Callum Brown who has been omitted from the side.

Brody Mihocek was ruled out after a nasty concussion against Melbourne, senior coach Nathan Buckley confirmed this on Saturday.

“Mihocek won’t play. He didn’t pass the concussion test three days ago,” Buckley said.

“Five days prior to the game you have to be clear. He’s simply not right to go. We’ll continue to take medical advice from our team.”

Our emergencies are Nathan Murphy, Rupert Wills, Matt Scharenberg, Callum Brown.

Shaky Magpies have work to do: Buckley

Canberra Times
Nathan Buckley says his "inconsistent" Collingwood side will have to put the hard yards in to get their wobbling AFL season back on track. The Magpies copped a 56-point hiding from Melbourne on Saturday night and have won just three of their past six games, leaving them seventh among a cluster of teams grappling for finals spots. Buckley lamented a "disconnected" performance and said it had been a consistent theme for the Magpies in recent weeks. "Nothing's coming easy - the last five or six weeks we've been inconsistent in the way that we've gone about it," Buckley said. "We're not finding the efficiency and balance in the way that we play - it opens us up defensively and we can put a lot of work in and not get much reward offensively. "So we've got a bit of work to do - we haven't got our heads in the sand. "... We've got some work to do on ourselves to be able to put our best foot forward and give ourselves a chance to perform and win games."

The Game

Melbourne into top eight after crushing Magpies

The Age
Collingwood were finally made to pay for their recent run of poor first quarters as Melbourne mercilessly mauled the Magpies on the way to a crushing 56-point win at the Gabba on Saturday. The Demons moved into the top eight with their third-straight win while the Magpies missed the opportunity to temporarily sneak into the top four with more injury dramas and butchered ball. After overcoming horribly wayward, wasteful and sluggish starts against cellar-dwellers Sydney and Adelaide, the Pies were punished by a dashing Demons side that got on top early and set-up their fifth win in the last seven outings with a seven-goal rampage in the second quarter.

The Pies are decimated, lethargic and ‘a mile away’ from premiership contention

Fox Footy
Melbourne champion Garry Lyon says Collingwood is “a mile away” from premiership contention as coach Nathan Buckley faces his biggest challenge in years. The Magpies missed a golden opportunity to put pressure on the top four after being smashed by Simon Goodwin’s team at the Gabba on Saturday. Collingwood booted just six goals in the 56-point loss with the club starring down the barrel of a number of must-win matches across the next month if they are to play finals.

Brody Mihocek stretchered off after head knock during Melbourne Demons contest

NEWS.com.au
Collingwood Magpies forward Brody Mihocek was stretchered off the Gabba after copping a brutal head knock against the Melbourne Demons on Saturday. During the second quarter of the round 12 encounter in Brisbane, veteran midfielder Steele Sidebottom booted the footy inside 50 towards Pies teammate Ben Reid. After contesting for the ball in the air, Melbourne defender Aaron vandenBerg’s elbow collided with Mihocek, who was also attempting to claim the mark.

AFL 2020 news: Melbourne turns around season as woeful Magpies continue downward spiral

Daily Telegraph
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said his side were ‘as disconnected as we’ve been’ after being thumped by Melbourne in a rare show of defensive vulnerability by the Magpies. The Pies came into the Saturday evening clash at the Gabba with the meanest defence in the competition but gave up 100-points as the Demons handed them a 56-point drumming. Collingwood actually had more inside 50s (41-40) and clearances (32 to 31) but the Demons booted 16 goals. Buckley said the Pies — who have played four games in 14 days — were “a little bit out of shape at the moment”.

Red-hot Demons thrash Pies to rise into top eight

AFL
MELBOURNE has surged into the top eight, playing its best football since 2018 to thump Collingwood by 56 points at the Gabba on Saturday night. The Demons blew the game open with an exhilarating seven-goal second quarter and kept their foot to the floor, running out rampant 16.4 (100) to 6.8 (44) winners. Even without injured skipper Max Gawn, they matched Collingwood's midfield and then used dare and bravery with the ball to open up the usually frugal Magpies' defence.

'We were off tonight, that's as disconnected as we've been': Buckley

Collingwood News
Nathan Buckley has never seen Collingwood as disconnected as it was in Saturday night's drubbing at the hands of Melbourne. On a horror night for the Magpies, luckless Ben Reid strained another hamstring and key forward Brody Mihocek was taken to hospital for scans on his neck after a sickening second-quarter collision. Buckley said the 56-point loss to the Demons was a concern, culminating a five-to-six-week period where "nothing's coming easy".

Jamie Elliott and Will Hoskin-Elliott are welcome additions to face Melbourne after missing round 11 with minor injuries.

Ben Reid and Darcy Moore come back into the line-up after being managed through the compressed fixture.

Collingwood welcomes back Lynden Dunn and Tim Broomhead for the round eleven clash against Adelaide on Tuesday night. The pair haven’t played senior football for a combined 1,637 days.

Dunn fought hard to earn a contract for the 2020 season as he recovered from a second anterior cruciate ligament injury, with the Pies re-signing the 33-year-old to a one-year rookie deal via the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP).

The veteran defender will play his first AFL game in 773 days as senior coach Nathan Buckley told him the news on Monday morning.

“When I told Dunny this morning, he teared up straight away. I know how much it means to you, mate,” Buckley said in the team meeting on Monday.

“You’ve done a load of work and we need your experience.”

With the in-form Darcy Moore being managed through the compressed fixture, he is a welcome addition to the Collingwood defence.

Broomhead has been on the cusp of selection after a number of eye-catching performances as a small forward in the club’s scratch matches.

Buckley credit the 26-year-old’s professionalism to put himself in a position to get back after not playing AFL in 864 days.

“It’s been an amazing journey over a long period of time and to have been out of the caper for a while,” Buckley said.

“Broomy, welcome back.

“You’ve been knocking on the door for the last three or four weeks. I’ve seen a very professional and driven individual working towards setting yourself up for this opportunity.”

He replaces star forward Jamie Elliott after he received a knock to the ear during the round ten match.

Darcy Cameron returns to the Pies forward line, while Ben Reid has been managed off a short turnaround.

Midfielder Rupert Wills gets another opportunity at the top level, coming in for Adam Treloar who sustained a hamstring injury in the win over Sydney.

Chris Mayne and Travis Varcoe return to the Magpies line-up after missing round ten through management and personal reasons respectively.

Captain Scott Pendlebury was unavailable for selection.

"I felt pretty good about it (Daicos goal). We struggled to find the middle of the big sticks for most of the night after dominating in general play…that was a bit of individual brilliance that helped give us a little bit of wriggle room. The negatives of it, the lack of finish…they are cream on the cake. The cake was really positive, the way that we set the ground up, our willingness inside, the pressure on them and our ability to win the ball was really strong. I thought we defended the ground really well for the most part and we actually used it OK through the midfield. It’s just that last kick. We were largely able to impose ourselves on the game and control the game for pretty much all of it. We could have lost it in the end, but we do need to finish and that will come.’’

The Age
Josh Daicos channelled the silky skills of his famous father to hand Collingwood a weird, wild and wacky nine-point win over Sydney at the Gabba on Thursday night. With the injury-ravaged Pies leading by three points with less than three minutes remaining and reduced to one fit player on the interchange bench, Daicos produced a stunning match-winner to make his father Peter proud. He won the ball hard up against the boundary line and pulled out a towering checkside in traffic to help the Pies snap a two-game losing streak and set themselves up with a friendly fixture over the next month. Daicos produced a horrible shank in the second term but as soon as he loomed over the Sherrin in the dying minutes, his DNA kicked in. But any bonhomie from the win was tempered by additions to the bulging and star-studded casualty ward at the Magpies, who butchered the ball all night. Midfielder Adam Treloar left the game in the third quarter with a suspected hamstring injury after the Pies lost Will Hoskin-Elliott with a leg injury in the first term. Boom young gun Isaac Quaynor was then carried from the field with a lower leg injury to leave the Collingwood bench to just one player. The Pies are already without the likes of skipper Scott Pendlebury, Jordan De Goey and Jeremy Howe as the mounting injury toll continues to undermine what was such a promising campaign just a few short weeks ago.

AFL
A STUNNING banana goal from Josh Daicos sealed a much-needed 6.14 (50) to 6.5 (41) win for Collingwood against Sydney at the Gabba on Thursday evening. The Pies had been woeful in front of goal through the first half, going into the long break with 2.10 on the board and trailing by eight points, but they straightened in the second half, however, the match was still on the line until Daicos' classic sealer. The young Sydney side didn't stop trying and a Jackson Thurlow goal midway through the last quarter brought the margin to just two points, but Nathan Buckley's men settled to go on and secure their fifth win from the opening 10 rounds. The victory was soured by a final-term leg injury to Isaac Quaynor that saw the young defender carried from the ground on a stretcher, adding to woes with Will Hoskin-Elliott and Adam Treloar also seeing the game out on the bench.

Fox Footy
Collingwood has escaped with a thrilling nine-point win against Sydney despite losing three players to injury and butchering the footy for an entire half. The Magpies (5-4-1) were woeful in the first two quarters, kicking 2.10 with one of those goals coming after the halftime siren, wasting total dominance in the midfield as the defence of the Swans (3-7) stood up. Nathan Buckley’s side hit the front midway through the third quarter and held on from there. but not without copping a major scare from their unfancied opponents, who got within two points - before a Josh Daicos special sealed the victory.

AAP
Collingwood have survived a massive scare brought about by their own woeful inaccuracy in front of goal and lost three key players to injuries in a tense nine-point win over Sydney at the Gabba. Will Hoskin-Elliott, Adam Treloar and Isaac Quaynor all failed to finish Thursday’s match as the Magpies’ almost kicked themselves to a third straight defeat. Brayden Maynard was also treated for a shoulder complaint but returned to play an important role in defence as Nathan Buckley’s men recorded an important 6.14 (50) to 6.5 (41) victory.

Collingwood will blood its fourth debutant of the season, with Trey Ruscoe receiving a call-up for round ten against Sydney on Thursday night at the Gabba.

The Magpies picked up the West Australian with its third and final pick in the 2019 AFL Draft.

Recruited as a tall defender who is a real competitive beast, the 18-year-old has developed into a forward since joining the club.

Ben Reid comes into the line-up for his first senior game of 2020, in replacement of Darcy Cameron who has been omitted from the side.

Jordan Roughead returns after sitting out round nine, while small forward Callum Brown returns from an ankle injury.

Travis Varcoe will miss the clash against Sydney for personal reasons.

"Around the ball they were hungrier to win it and hungrier to attack us when we won it. We’ve lacked a bit of an edge in the last couple of weeks. The last two games we haven’t been as aggressive in there as we usually are. You take the numbers away, your eyes told you they were more intent across the board than we were, which is a concern for us because we pride ourselves on that. We come up against a Sydney side that have always been rated in a trademark sense around contested ball and tackling. It’s a fitting test for us, because we need to get that right. It won’t be on the training track, it will be on Thursday night.”

The Age
Collingwood are in trouble. At the end of round nine they're outside of the top eight, and just lost their first of four matches in 14 days across three states, going down by 12 points against Fremantle on Sunday night. Scott Pendlebury isn't likely to be back for at least one or two games, Jordan De Goey and Jeremy Howe look done for the season, and they're beset by problems they've long faced and others that are relatively new. Most concerning over the last two games has been Collingwood's poor performance in the contest. They were battered by Fremantle in both contested possessions and clearances and this was the root of the Pies problems on Sunday night. If it weren't for Darcy Moore and Brayden Maynard taking double-digit intercept marks between them the scoreline deficit would have been larger and the game over quicker than it was.

AFL
THIS is soooo Collingwood. The Magpies sit outside the eight beyond the halfway point of the season – Sunday night's loss to Fremantle leaving them 10th with four wins and a draw after nine matches – and yet they could still win the premiership. They are courageously playing good football without Scott Pendlebury, Jeremy Howe and Jordan De Goey. And, as always, they are playing matches after off-field actions of key personnel have created screaming, negative headlines. A social hit of tennis by coach Nathan Buckley on Friday ultimately had nothing to do with Collingwood's loss to the Dockers. But it was the AFL's highest profile COVID-19 protocols breach, the fifth by an AFL club in the past week, and followed a transgression by Magpies vice-captain Steele Sidebottom five weeks ago. Sidebottom returned against Fremantle after a sanction attached to that situation, and was outstanding. Collingwood as a club and Collingwood players as individuals seemingly always respond when under adverse scrutiny, a situation which presents itself regularly given the ability of club president Eddie McGuire to either shoot from the hip at generic AFL issues, or shoot even more pointedly when one of his own is under attack. Twice this year McGuire has made aggressive public statements about ramifications for AFL industry people who breach the AFL's COVID-19 regulations. On both occasions, the comments have been exposed as nothing more than hypocrisy, with Sidebottom five weeks ago and Buckley on Friday presenting themselves as individuals who, in McGuire's eyes, should respectively be stood down for the year or sent home from a hub. McGuire has must-listen views on all AFL matters, but he would prefer no one had heard them when they need to be applied to people wearing black and white, like Sidebottom and Buckley.

Daily Telegraph
The biggest issue for the Magpies in a disappointing first half was the lesson a young Fremantle midfield gave them at the coalface. Beaten to the contested ball (73-53) and losing the clearances (20-13), alarm bells were sounding early for Nathan Buckley and his men for the second straight match. Experienced midfielders Adam Treloar and Adams were lacking support at stoppages and the Dockers looked hungrier when the ball was in dispute. With captain Scott Pendlebury sidelined for at least another match with his quad injury, the Pies need to find answers in the midfield quickly. They have matches against battling teams Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne to come, but the Dockers showed their star-studded midfield is gettable.

Fox Footy
Fremantle has caused one of the biggest upsets in 2020 after defeating premiership fancies Collingwood at Optus Stadium on Sunday. Collingwood snatched back the lead on the stroke of three-quarter time after a strong burst of three goals, but it was all Fremantle in the last term as Nat Fyfe led his team to victory. The Dockers booted four goals to one to run out winners by 12-points, ending a horror 48 hours for Collingwood. The Magpies were fined $50,000 (half suspended) by the AFL after breaches of the COVID-19 protocols. Nathan Buckley and Brenton Sanderson will pay the $25,000 fine after the pair played tennis with Alicia Molik.

Collingwood will blood Irishman Mark Keane in round nine against Fremantle on Sunday.

The 20-year-old from County Cork will be the third Irishman in the club’s history to run out in the black and white. Senior coach Nathan Buckley made the exciting announcement earlier this week in front of the playing group.

“All the way from the Emerald Isle, he has worked hard for this, but 'Irish' [Keane], well done buddy,” Buckley said.

“You've had a few ups and downs mate, some really good form the last year, this situation threw things up in the air a little bit but we need your aerial, we need your strength."

The Magpies have made a further four changes for the Dockers, with vice-captain Steele Sidebottom a handy inclusion after Scott Pendlebury is out with a quad injury. Sidebottom returns after serving his four-match suspension for breaching COVID-19 protocols.

Brayden Sier makes his long-awaited return to the line-up, the hard-midfielder hasn’t played since round 18, 2019, but has been prolific in recent scratch matches. Defender Jack Madgen comes in for his first game since round two against Richmond.

Veteran defender Travis Varcoe is welcomed back into the side after missing the Eagles clash with a rib complaint, while Callum Brown hasn't come up from rolling his ankle during the second term against the Eagles.

Atu Bosenavulagi, Jordan Roughead, Matt Scharenberg, Rupert Wills have been omitted from the side.
