Collingwood gave its fans a delicious taste of the future and West Coast an anxious next three weeks on the back of a 45-point smashing. The Pies’ faster and braver ball use under Robert Harvey was on full show, owning the corridor and opening up their forward 50, taking 18 marks inside 50. Collingwood was able to control the ball and showed West Coast up with its superior work rate around the ground on their way to 155 uncontested marks. ... Collingwood got their customary jump on the Eagles in the first quarter on the back of brave and precise ball movement. The Pies looked inside whenever they could, but importantly didn’t use the corridor for the sake of it. Stand-in skipper Steele Sidebottom, Jamie Elliott, Will Hoskin-Elliott kicked goals before Jack Ginnivan nailed a 50-metre bomb for the first goals of his career to give Collingwood a 21-point quarter-time lead. If Pies supporters thought they were in dreamland in the first quarter they hadn’t seen anything yet. Collingwood played its best footy of the season during a six goal to one second term.

Collingwood has delivered a mightily comprehensive win against the odds, upsetting a horrendously poor West Coast side to place further doubts on the Eagles’ finals credentials. In a remarkable result, the young Magpies kicked the first eight goals of the game and took a whopping 155 uncontested marks to West Coast’s 93 to obliterate Adam Simpson’s side. Despite four late goals to the Eagles, the Magpies were never fazed as they ran out 45-point winners, 14.6 (90) to 6.9 (45). ...  As bad as the Eagles were, this was arguably the most thrilling Collingwood performance of 2021 so far. We’d seen glimpses in recent weeks of a new, faster style under caretaker coach Robert Harvey. On Saturday afternoon, Pies fans saw it for four quarters – and it was brilliant. Yes West Coast’s pressure was deplorable and allowed the Pies to play with great freedom. But with ball in hand, the Pies played with terrific dash and dare, which translated onto the scoreboard.

Collingwood have torn apart West Coast at the MCG, kicking 10 goals to one in the opening half to embarrass the Eagles once again away from home in a performance by the visitors that lacked care and effort. The Magpies did everything that the Eagles did not, putting pressure on the opposition when they didn’t have the ball and moving the ball quickly with sharp kicks and handballs when they did win possession, ending with 12 individual goalkickers in the 45-point win. It was a result that would make candidates for the Magpies’ coaching job double down on their efforts to win the vacant post. The half-time margin was an indictment on the Eagles as it was premiership skipper Shannon Hurn’s 300th game – the first Eagle to reach the milestone – but it was not out of character given their 90 point-plus defeats against Geelong and Sydney earlier in the year. This time Collingwood scored 90 points to double the Eagles’ final score.

COLLINGWOOD has delivered a stunning blow to West Coast’s finals hopes with an incredible 45-point victory at the MCG on Saturday. In premiership captain Shannon Hurn’s 300th game, the Eagles barely offered a yelp, conceding the first eight goals of the game before eventually going down 14.6 (90) to 6.9 (45). Acting captain Steele Sidebottom led from the front with 33 disposals and a goal, while Jordan De Goey also impressed with 34 touches and a game-high 518 metres gained.

Round 20
Collingwood v West Coast

STEELE Sidebottom will replace Scott Pendlebury as Collingwood captain against West Coast on Saturday before the top job is rotated for the remainder of the season.

Pendlebury will sit out the rest of the campaign with a fractured leg he sustained against Port Adelaide last week in what could prove to be his last match as skipper.

The gun veteran is poised to sign a one-year extension for 2022, however has previously flagged the prospect of finishing his career without the title as captain.

Sidebottom and his fellow vice-captains Taylor Adams and Jeremy Howe, who will play his first game since round five, will share the mantle for the final three matches after this weekend.

The high-flying defender first injured his hamstring against the Eagles in Perth before he was sent for surgery to remove scar tissue in the hamstring that was aggravated while pushing for a return in May.

Interim coach Robert Harvey defended the decision to play Howe for the last month of the season with the Pies out of finals contention.

"From his point of view, he really is a great leader so he wants to get back and help this group with four games to go, he feels he can really help that," Harvey said on Thursday.

A bid to force a spill of the Collingwood board has landed in the Victorian Supreme Court.

In a dramatic escalation of the Magpies’ board fight, former club solicitor Francis Galbally has lodged a Supreme Court application aimed at expediting the staging of an extraordinary general meeting.

Galbally’s lawyers are seeking orders for Collingwood to hand over a copy of the club’s register of members, needed to validate the signatures of thousands of supporters gathered to trigger a spill of the Mark Korda-led board.

A hearing before a judge of the Supreme Court could be held within weeks.

In an affidavit signed by Galbally, Collingwood is accused of breaching section 173 of the Corporations Act in refusing to disclose its membership register.

“I have become increasingly concerned about the governance and overall direction of the club,” Galbally says.

Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury fears he has broken his leg after coming off injured in the 28-point loss to Port Adelaide on Friday night. Pendlebury limped from the field during the first quarter with what the club said was a lower leg injury then was substituted at quarter-time. The 33-year-old told ABC radio post-game he believed it might be broken because it felt a little similar to the pain he experienced when he fractured it previously. Pendlebury said he was really sore around the bone in the middle of his leg and the muscle around that was quite tight. “I’ve broken my leg before and it’s a little bit similar to the pain I experienced with that,” he said on ABC Radio. “It’s really sore around the bone and the middle of my leg and the leg muscle around that is really tight. I tried to run and kick and it didn’t feel right.”.

Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury fears he may have suffered a broken leg during his side’s clash with Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium. The 33-year-old was subbed out of Friday night’s game at quarter-time after landing awkwardly during a first-term tackle. Pendlebury limped off the ground during the first quarter and went straight down to the rooms to be further assessed by the Collingwood medical staff. After emerging from the rooms, he attempted to prove his fitness by doing some run-throughs along the boundary line. But he failed in his attempts to be re-introduced into the match. Collingwood confirmed Pendlebury had suffered a knock to the lower leg just above the ankle. Speaking to ABC Sport after the match, Pendlebury said the setback felt similar to an incident he suffered a decade ago. “I’ve broken my leg before and it was a little bit similar to the pain I experienced with that,” Pendlebury told ABC Sport, as reported by broadcaster Corbin Middlemas on Twitter. “It’s really sore around the bone in the middle of my leg and the muscle around that as well is really tight. I tried to run or kick and it didn’t feel right. Hopefully it’s not broken, but we’ll get a scan tomorrow and see.”

Port Adelaide celebrated club legend Travis Boak’s landmark 300th match in style after overcoming a valiant challenge from Collingwood to win by 28 points at Marvel Stadium. The Magpies were hard-at-it early and showed splashes of spark in the second half but were unable to completely shake off the loss of captain Scott Pendlebury in the opening term. Pendlebury suffered a lower leg knock while being dragged down from behind by Willem Drew and was substituted out of the contest at quarter-time. Pendlebury’s long-time midfield rival Boak would never have envisaged an empty Marvel Stadium for a “home” match being the way he reached the milestone, equalling Kane Cornes’ AFL club record.

COLLINGWOOD coach Robert Harvey says the decision to use tall forward Mason Cox as the medical substitute didn't hurt his team's ability to run out Friday night's clash against Port Adelaide. The Magpies lost captain Scott Pendlebury to a lower leg injury in the first quarter of the 28-point loss at Marvel Stadium, with the star midfielder comparing the pain of his injury to a broken leg in a post-match interview. Harvey said the club would wait on scans before declaring the extent of the injury and Pendlebury had been moving around well post-match. The coach said he was happy with how his team had covered the midfielder's loss and the addition of another tall forward did not affect the Magpies' ability to run out the game. "We were a really young team tonight and we didn't have a lot in reserve in regard to experienced players," Harvey said when asked if he was happy with the decision to select Cox as the medical sub. "I know Mason was quieter and could have done more, but in the end I thought we were really positive in how we entered the ball inside 50. Through where we're at I thought that was the best call and that's the way we went. We looked like we were running on top of the ground, so I didn't think that was an issue."

Round 19
Collingwood v Port Adelaide

Collingwood will blood their eighth and ninth debutant of the season against Port Adelaide on Friday night.

Irishman Anton Tohill and forward Jack Ginnivan will don the black and white for the first time, with interim coach Robert Harvey announcing the news to the playing group on Wednesday.

Tohill's journey started when he signed as a rookie at the Magpies in 2018, the 200cm defender has been impressing in recent VFL games and will line up in the back six against the Power.

“He’s after a long journey from Ireland and he has worked really, really hard at his game. He is a 200cm supreme athlete with the ability to run and jump. He has worked hard on aerial craft and can play up forward as well as down back,” Harvey said.

Ginnivan, a product of the Bendigo Pioneers, was Collingwood’s first selection in last year’s Rookie Draft. The 18-year-old has strung together impressive performances in the second-tier competition, with the senior coach saying he's earned selection off the back of 11 goals in three weeks.

"He's a great country kid from Bendigo, really honest," Harvey said.

"He's really popular amongst the boys. He's worked really hard on his game. He's a natural small forward."

Finlay Macrae comes back into the line-up for his sixth AFL game.

Off the short turnaround, veteran Chris Mayne will be managed after a minor ankle roll during the clash against Carlton.

As noted earlier in the week, Callum Brown (shoulder) and Josh Thomas (concussion) were ruled out of round 19, while Will Hoskin-Elliott (back) hasn't got up for the match.

Among the emergencies and in the mix to be named as medical substitute is Mason Cox, Max Lynch, Brayden Sier, and Tom Wilson.

Carlton shrugged off the loss of star skipper Patrick Cripps to claim bragging rights over arch rivals Collingwood at the MCG. The Blues kept their slim final hopes alive as they staged a fourth-quarter comeback to down the Pies by 29 points on Sunday. Carlton didn’t hit the front for the first time until midway through the final term as they stormed home with six final quarter goals.

Carlton’s slim finals hopes are still alive, thanks to a stunning final-quarter blitz and herculean performance from Sam Walsh in a come-from-behind win over Collingwood. The Magpies got the fast start on the Blues, kicking the first three goals of the game then extending their lead to 24 points halfway through the second term. But the Blues got on top around the stoppages then put the foot down in the fourth quarter, kicking 6.4 to 0.3 and running out 29-point winners, 13.13 (91) to 9.8 (62).

In front of zero fans at the MCG on Sunday, Carlton had played largely uninspiring football for three quarters, trailing by four goals during time-on of the second quarter and 20 points midway through the third term. But the Blues found something from that point onwards ... The match did not reach any great heights during the first half, but the Pies had been the better side. They were cleaner around goal, with first-year utility Ollie Henry finding all too much and bobbing up with three majors before the long break. ... The Pies had more of the footy, and the Blues’ pressure was lacking, until the latter part of the second term when they belatedly lifted a notch to trim the gap to within two goals at half-time.

Jordan De Goey's 31 disposals and 12 marks, along with Chris Mayne's 26 touches and 10 grabs, had initially put Collingwood in a position of control, but interim coach Robert Harvey watched as his side's lead dissipated over the course of the game. It had hardly been the most inspiring start regardless, with both sides plagued by woeful attacking inefficiency in its early stages. It took teenage forward Ollie Henry, previously without an AFL goal, to finally deliver a pair of pinpoint shots and help open a 17-point Collingwood lead in the first term.

With the team's main training session taking place on Friday, Robert Harvey's selections will become clearer that afternoon.

Among the extended interchange is Callum Brown, Mason Cox, Jack Ginnivan, Oliver Henry, Nathan Murphy, Caleb Poulter, Trey Ruscoe and Tom Wilson.

Tom Wilson continues to excel down back for the Pies' VFL, while Caleb Poulter is a chance to return after being managed through round 17.

As noted earlier in the week, Will Kelly comes out of the side after injuring his quad during the clash against Richmond. He is expected to be available in round 20.

The final squad will be named at 5pm on Friday.

The finals may be out of reach but Collingwood proved they could be a real thorn in the side of those above them after producing a brilliant final term to topple the flagging premiers. ... seven consecutive goals from the resurgent Magpies across the third and fourth quarters sent sparks flying all over Richmond’s train tracks, causing the Tigers’ season to crash head-on into the side of a mountain. Collingwood actually controlled the ball for most of the game, finishing with far more disposals (431-338) and marks (118-61), but due to poor ball use and skill errors, struggled to finish off their good work in the first three quarters, managing only six goals from 41 inside 50s compared to the far more efficient Richmond’s 10 from 38. But to the Magpies’ credit, they kept coming, even after they seemingly shooting themselves in the foot with Jack Crisp, Jordan De Goey and Brody Mihocek (twice) all missing gettable shots in the third quarter.

Collingwood has sent Richmond’s finals chances into peril after completing a stunning comeback win at the MCG on Sunday night. ... It marked Collingwood’s fifth win for the season and first under caretaker coach Robert Harvey — who had lost their last two games since Nathan Buckley’s resignation. ... Trailing by 28 points halfway through the third term, Collingwood booted seven-straight goals, including eight of the last nine of the match, to turn it on its head and run out winners. It was a stunning turnaround from the black and white to send Richmond’s finals hopes in tatters – who now sit 12th on the ladder. The Magpies dominated the fourth quarter – winning disposals (+56), contested possessions (+14) and most importantly the result on the scoreboard (7.2.44 to 1.2.8).

The king is dead. Long live the king. If Richmond’s premiership hopes looked shaky after they were overrun late by West Coast, further diminished after they were strangled by St Kilda, and threadbare after being upset by Gold Coast, then they are as good as gone after coughing up a 29-point third-quarter lead against the lowly Collingwood at the MCG on Sunday, in doing so handing Magpies caretaker coach Robert Harvey his first victory since replacing Nathan Buckley.

COLLINGWOOD has charged home against a fading Richmond, snatching a 16-point win to put the back-to-back premiers' finals hopes in serious doubt. The Pies were 20 points adrift at the final break of an injury-ravaged Richmond side that had looked to be on the improve, but took advantage of its disposal dominance to slam home seven last-quarter goals. ... On numerous occasions in the first three quarters Richmond looked like it was going to accelerate in a quest to rebuild its wobbly percentage, but Collingwood always came through with a crucial goal or two to stop the rot. It set them up perfectly for a ferocious final quarter, which should set the tail end of its season up beautifully.

St Kilda’s unlikely bid for finals footy this year has a pulse after they survived a major final-quarter scare against Collingwood at the MCG on Sunday. After only managing three goals in the opening three quarters, and falling 49 points behind, the Magpies’ woke up in spectacular fashion to kick the final six majors of the game to trim the margin to eight points. But Collingwood left their run too late, and the Saints held on for a nine-point win after being the better side for the majority of the day.

St Kilda has survived an incredible late scare to register an unconvincing win over a Collingwood side that, ultimately, left too little too late. ... the Saints, who led by as much as 49 points late in the third term, cost themselves significant percentage in the final quarter as the Pies finished with a rush, which included kicking the last six goals of the game unanswered. In a familiar tale of their 2021 campaign – both before and after Nathan Buckley – the Pies only kicked three goals from the first three quarters as they struggled to hit the scoreboard and move the ball with fluidity. Then the six-goal avalanche came, which seemingly was only a result of the Pies showing more intensity at the contest then being more prepared to move the ball quickly when they moved it to the outside. The change in approach frustrated former Magpie Brian Taylor. “Why is it now that they’ve got the freedom to go and play quick?” the Coleman medallist asked on Channel 7. “Why couldn’t this have been earlier?”

Conventional wisdom suggests that installing a caretaker coach releases the shackles and allows a team’s players to play with greater freedom and dare. On the evidence of the first three quarters from a bleak Sunday afternoon at the MCG, Robert Harvey is not a subscriber to conventional wisdom. Rarely can a Collingwood side have played as dishearteningly for its supporters as the Magpies did until the final change on Sunday. And then, out of nowhere, came a flood of goals. From 49 points down to St Kilda late in the third term, the Pies played direct and dominant footy. When Mason Cox, a non-factor for most of the game, kicked his first major deep in the final term, the Pies trailed by just eight with more than two minutes remaining before losing by nine points. It was a run that left more questions than answers. Where had that been? The back half of a season like the one the Pies are enduring should be laden with enticing tastes of a sweet future to come, but until the last quarter there was barely a redeeming feature from this performance. Collingwood were outdone at the contest while playing grim, error-riddled football, thrashed by a St Kilda side that will somehow end the round only half a game and percentage outside the top eight.

St Kilda did what it had to against a Collingwood line-up that kicked one goal in the first half before storming home to boot five (to none) in the last quarter and give Brett Ratten's side a fright ... Taylor Adams (34 disposals) and Jordan De Goey (32 disposals, 1.2) were Collingwood's best in what was an uninspiring showing until its final-term flurry.
