Maddie Shevlin: debut

Maddie Shevlin is set to run out for her first game of the 2021 season this Sunday when the Pies meet the Lions in round seven. 

The third-year Magpie has worked her way back into the side after battling a wrist injury sustained during the pre-season.

The 23-year-old is the only new inclusion into the Pies line-up for Sunday's game and will come in for Ebony O'Dea who has been listed as an emergency for the match.

The round seven match was previously scheduled to be played at Hickey Park in Brisbane.

However, due to a positive COVID-19 case, the game was moved to VU Whitten Oval and will now be hosted by the Pies.

The timing of the change to the venue means crowds will not be permitted at the relocated match.

While the Lions currently sit in second position on the ladder, the Pies lead the way one game clear at the top of the table as the sole undefeated side.

AFL Statement

The AFL wishes to advise a change to the venue of the Round Seven clash between the Brisbane Lions and Collingwood with the game to be played at the Victoria University Whitten Oval at 3:10pm AEDT on Sunday, March 14.

The match, previously scheduled to be played at Hickey Park in Brisbane, has been moved to Melbourne’s Victoria University Whitten Oval to best protect the health and safety of everyone in the competition and ensure the season progresses with minimal disruption and risk amid the constantly changing environment as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

AFL General Manager Women’s Football Nicole Livingstone said the health and safety of everyone in the game and in the wider community remains paramount and the league would continue to take the advice of governments and health officials.

“While COVID-19 continues to impact the community, the health and welfare of our players and the community remains the priority and we remain committed to delivering a full season in a safe manner anchored in the advice of respective governments, public health officials and medical experts,” Ms Livingstone said.

“The afternoon slot allows for the Brisbane Lions to fly into Melbourne on Sunday morning and return to Brisbane on Sunday night.”

The timing of the change to the venue means crowds will not be permitted at the relocated match and Ms. Livingstone thanked supporters for their understanding.

Media Clippings Herald Sun Collingwood has reaffirmed its standing as the AFLW team to beat, surging past a spirited Bulldogs outfit to remain undefeated at Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon. While the Bulldogs had momentum in the first half, the Pies were able to pick apart the Dogs’ defence in the second half, piling on seven goals after the main break. Young star Chloe Molloy and co-captain Brianna Davey were instrumental in the Pies second-half surge, leading Collingwood to a sixth consecutive win. Collingwood News The Western Bulldogs' four-game winning streak has come to an end, losing to a rampaging Collingwood by 36 points at Victoria Park. A seven-goal second half means the Pies have now won six on the trot, extending their current club record and reclaiming top spot as a consequence of the 7.9 (51) to 2.3 (15) result. It was a grim opening two quarters, with just one goal kicked (by Bulldog Elisabeth Georgostathis) as inaccuracy plagued the Pies (0.7) and defensive pressure stifled the Bulldogs. Collingwood was very late coming out onto the ground after the main break, managing just one hurried run-through before the first bounce of the third, but it didn't seem to matter. They won the opening clearance, locking the ball inside 50 before the Magpies finally kicked their first through Chloe Molloy and their second through debutant Abbi Moloney just a minute later. The Pies were much more organised in the third term, spreading the play well and were consequently more effective with their ball use. The floodgates opened, the young Dogs panicked under pressure and lost their structure coming out of defence. The Age Collingwood overcame a goalless first half to edge closer to an unbeaten AFLW home-and-away season by beating the Western Bulldogs at Victoria Park on Sunday. Having almost gone winless two seasons ago, the Pies are now the envy of the competition, winning six straight matches to start the 2021 campaign. Forward Abbi Moloney: on debut.

Collingwood draftee Abbi Moloney will put on the black and white stripes for the first time this Sunday when the Pies take on the Western Bulldogs at Victoria Park.

The forward was selected by the Pies with pick No.31 in the 2020 NAB AFL Women's Draft after showing some impressing signs during her time at the Sandringham Dragons.

Throughout the pre-season, Moloney established herself as a fearless forward with strong hands who also brings a great energy to her game.

The debut on Sunday will hold extra significance for the 18-year-old who will face off against the club her father, Troy Moloney played 36 games for. 

Moloney comes into the side for third-year Magpie, Jordan Membrey who suffered a season-ending ACL injury during last Sunday's 35-point win over the Demons. 

Maddie Shevlin and Bella Smith have been named as emergencies for the round six match.

Newman Returns Aliesha Newman will return to the Collingwood side for the game against Melbourne. The speedy forward has worked her way back into the side having been omitted from the Pies round four side who claimed a 20-point victory over North. She replaces midfielder Sarah Rowe, who sustained an injury to her shoulder during last week’s match. The Irish cross-coder is set to be sidelined for 2-3 weeks. It will be the first occasion Newman will come face-to-face with her former side. Abbi Moloney and Kristy Stratton have been named emergencies for the match. The Pies will be looking to make it five from five when return to their spiritual home at Victoria Park.

Round 5 will mark the inaugural AFLW Indigenous Round, as the league celebrates and highlights the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to the game of football and in our country.

The Pies will return home to Victoria Park to take on Melbourne, as both sides look to solidify their position within the top six.

Coming off Round 4

Collingwood remain one of just two undefeated sides, following a commanding 20-point victory over North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium last Saturday.

The Round 4 win came through a solid team performance, with Chloe Molloy booting two goals up forward, Brianna Davey leading the midfield with 31 disposals and the backline holding the Kangaroos goalless for the first time in AFLW history.

An eye on the opposition

The Demons were dealt their first loss of the season when they went down to a tenacious Bulldogs outfit on their home deck at Whitten Oval.

Despite dominating the contest, inaccuracy was the Dees undoing as they found themselves unable to capitalise on a forward-fifty ledger skewed heavily in their favour.

Melbourne will be eager to atone for last week’s mistakes and return to the form which saw them defeat the Pies to the tune of 20 points the last time the two sides met in Round 4 of the 2020 AFLW season.

Consistent pressure across four quarters will be key for the Pies in order to limit the Dees’ forward opportunity and take home the four points.

Pies to look out for

Jordan Membrey has provided yet another dimension to an already dangerous forward dynamic after returning from an ankle injury a fortnight ago.

The Pies’ leading goalkicker for the 2020 season registered one major from her eight disposals last week, capped off by a courageous mark running back with the flight of the ball.

Stacey Livingstone can stake claim to a feat that no other can, playing the general down back in a side that held the Kangaroos goalless for the first time in AFLW history.

Livingstone finished with a season-high 16 disposals (including 13 kicks) and eight marks in a herculean effort to get the Pies over the line.

Indigenous Round

The squad will continue to show their support for the Free the Flag campaign, wearing t-shirts during the warm-up this week, and for the remainder of their 2021 campaign.

The team will also wear the club’s Indigenous guernsey designed by Ross Morgan Senior and his sons, highlighting the Yorta Yorta culture.

The story behind the design comes from the Cummeragunja Walk Off, which was a protest by Aboriginal people at Cummeragunja Station. It is remembered as an act of strength and resilience.

Collingwood forward, Aliesha Newman has also been involved in designing the league’s Indigenous logo for the round.

The Magpies inflicted more pain on the Tigers, as they led from start to finish at Punt Rd on Sunday to run out winners 7.6 (48) to 4.7 (31). The Tigers gained enough of the ball, particularly in the second term, but lacked polish up forward and finished with just four goals from 32 inside-50 entries to Collingwood's 25. AFLW COLLINGWOOD'S powerful unbeaten start to the season has continued with a polished 17-point win over a dogged Richmond. The Tigers' quest for a first win continues despite pushing the Magpies harder than the scoreboard suggested. ... Collingwood's ball movement was magnificent at times; the players didn't get sucked into the contest, spreading well and allowing for clean disposal chains. It was Davey’s day at Victoria Park as the Collingwood skipper willed her side over the line against an improved Geelong outfit, winning 25 disposals and booting a crucial goal in the 29-point win. Geelong came out with a point to prove following their dour defeat last week, slotting the opening two goals, but were kept goalless from there on as the Magpies controlled proceedings. This dominance did not show on the scoreboard until the final quarter when the floodgates opened, the Magpies piling on 3.5 to the Cats’ one behind.  AFLW COLLINGWOOD continues to build the perfect platform for its AFLW season, outlasting a brave Geelong side to win by 29 points in an arm-wrestle of a contest at Victoria Park on Saturday. The Magpies recovered a relatively slow start, with the quality of Brianna Davey eventually rising to the fore as the club's co-captain inspired her side to a gritty 6.9 (45) to 2.4 (16) victory. Davey had 25 disposals, four clearances and kicked the game's sealing goal in the final quarter, with her grunt in the midfield throughout the match ultimately helping to swing a hard-fought contest in Collingwood's favour. The Age Collingwood overcame a sluggish start on Saturday to continue their perfect opening to the AFLW season with a 29-point win over Geelong at Victoria Park. The Cats kicked two of the first three goals, but the Magpies, inspired by co-captain Brianna Davey, clicked into gear after quarter-time, booting the last five majors of the game, to run out 6.9 (45) to 2.4 (16) winners.  The margin could have been much bigger if the inaccurate Magpies made the most of their inside-50 advantage (36-22).

Collingwood News Alanna Mullan Collingwood has made one change for Saturday’s Pride Game against Geelong with Speedy midfielder, Sarah Rowe added to the side. The Irish cross-coder missed last week’s season opener as she was managed for a shoulder issue. The Pies will be without small forward, Aliesha Newman who received a one-match ban for a dangerous tackle in last week's clash against the Blues. Joanna Lin and Kristy Stratton have been named as emergencies.  Pride Round For the first time, a competition wide Pride Round will be held during round two of the AFL Women’s season. The round is an opportunity to celebrate diversity across the league and is another step closer towards becoming a more inclusive game. As part of the round, the Pies will wear Pride rainbow socks. Pride flags will also be handed out at the gate to attendees on game day. Additionally, all AFL Umpires will wear rainbow-coloured sweat bands, while Goal Umpires will use rainbow flags. The 50-metre arc ground markings will also be painted rainbow for the occasion. While the Magpies were originally due to meet the Gold Coast Suns, recent changes in government restrictions across the country caused a late fixturing change with the Pies now set to face Geelong.
