What The Pies Coach Said
"Players and staff are all a little bit down. I think it was a fantastic
game of footy, it could have gone either way in the end. From a coach's
perspective, from what our playing group has put up this year, and
particularly the last couple of weeks, we've got so much fight in us.
We're all disappointed but immensely proud of the group we've got."

The 2021 AFLW grand final will be played between the Adelaide Crows and Brisbane Lions at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday April 17 at 2pm AEST (1.30pm ACST). It’ll be the second time Brisbane and Adelaide will meet in an AFLW grand final — they played off for the flag in the inaugural season in 2017 — after the Lions held off a plucky Collingwood outfit in a thrilling four-point preliminary final win that included five lead changes. With the Lions leading by 10 points with just over 20 seconds remaining, Magpies defender Ash Brazill drifted forward and kicked a super running goal to reduce the margin to under a kick. But the Lions’ midfield held up at the contest to force another stoppage and see the clock run down.
BRISBANE will play in its third NAB AFL Women's Grand Final after outlasting Collingwood by four points in a thrilling preliminary final victory at the Gabba on Saturday. The Lions ensured it would be a rematch of the inaugural decider in 2017 when they travel to Adelaide to play the Crows following their 7.3 (45) to 6.5 (41) victory. In a physical contest that went back and forth all day, Brisbane trailed by two points at the final change, but goals to Greta Bodey and Dakota Davidson looked to have sealed victory. However, there was one final twist when Magpie Ash Brazill bombed a goal from 45m in the final 30 seconds to ensure a heart-stopping finish. But the Lions hung on in front of a jubilant home crowd to take them to a third decider following losses against Adelaide in 2017 and the Western Bulldogs in 2018. The Brisbane Lions have earnt another shot at a maiden AFLW premiership with a four-point preliminary final win over a gallant Collingwood at the Gabba on Saturday. Trailing by two points at three-quarter time in a see-sawing contest, the Lions steadied when it mattered most to win 7-3 (45) to 6-5 (41). Collingwood drew to within a goal of the Lions when Ashleigh Brazill kicked a six-pointer with 21 seconds remaining, but Brisbane held on. The victory, inspired by a three-goal performance by Dakota Davidson, secured the Lions a third AFL grand final appearance, and they will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky when they meet minor premiers Adelaide in next Saturday’s premiership decider at the Adelaide Oval. The Crows will be chasing their third premiership, qualifying for the grand final with an 18-point win over Melbourne in Saturday’s early preliminary final. It’s a fitting grand final, bringing together the season’s best two teams. But the Magpies weren’t far off the pace, and made the Lions work hard at the Gabba. The Brisbane Lions joined Adelaide in next week’s AFLW grand final after defeating Collingwood in a fierce contest at the Gabba. It will be Brisbane’s third grand final. The Lions entered the preliminary final after a week off and the Magpies earnt their way with a come-from-behind win over the Kangaroos last weekend. |
