The Pies tried hard throughout and even looked the better
side at times, but were ultimately outclassed by their more
experienced opponents as they slumped to a 16th loss for the
season. Midfield duo Taylor Adams (31 disposals and 10
clearances) and Jordan De Goey (23 touches) won plenty of the
ball, while goal-sneak Jamie Elliott played a lone hand up
forward with four goals. ... The last 12 months haven't been
great for the Magpie Army, but there are enough positive signs
coming out of the Holden Centre to think a rapid rise up the
ladder won't be too far away. The nucleus of Brodie Grundy,
Taylor Adams, Darcy Moore, Jordan De Goey and Jack Crisp are
still in their prime, while teenagers Jack Ginnivan, Jay
Rantall, Oliver Henry and Finlay Macrae have shown enough this
season to prove they will be around for some time. Throw
another talented Daicos into the mix and Nathan Buckley's
successor has plenty to work with in 2022 and beyond.
The Dons had secured an unlikely return to the finals, the Pies had
long been playing out time in a tumultuous year for the club, and
the two sides produced the type of bruise-free football associated
with such a low-stakes game. Had this been cricket, the players
would’ve shaken hands 20 minutes into the third quarter, the Bombers
content with first innings points and the Pies glad to get on the
end-of-season beers 45 minutes early. |

Ross Lyon has revealed he turned down an approach from Collingwood regarding their senior coaching position due to the “instability” at the club.
The former St Kilda and Fremantle coach has been the hot tip to take over at either Collingwood or arch-rivals Carlton, who are expected to part ways with coach David Teague – who is contracted through 2022 and maintains he is the right man for the job – in coming weeks.
After initially suggesting that he wasn’t interested in returning to AFL coaching circles, Lyon has changed his tune in the last week, and he revealed an advance from Magpies football boss Graham Wright.“I don’t think Graham Wright would mind, he reached out to a friend to get my number and I was aware and just said respectfully I wouldn’t entertain that for a variety of reasons,” Lyon told Nine’s Footy Classified.
“It’s hard to articulate. Sometimes it’s just sometimes just chemistry.”
Collingwood has been shrouded by off-field controversy all season, with a battle for the presidency taking place behind the scenes between the incumbent Mark Korda and challenger Jeff Browne. Lyon admitted the boardroom antics played a part in his decision.
“If you get a headhunter ring you and you go and meet them and you go for the job, if you haven’t got that chemistry, that happens pretty quick, well it doesn’t happen or it shouldn’t happen,” he said. “If Ed [McGuire] was president of Collingwood it’d be a different story.”
“I think it’s instability. I think Nathan’s a bit unlucky. I don’t know Nathan, Nathan’s not a friend, but just from the outside ... I think if you see misalignment it’s a red flag.”

Collingwood’s boardroom brawl will go before a Supreme Court judge at the end of this month.
Supreme Court Justice Peter Riordan has been allocated to oversee a proceeding brought by long-time Magpies solicitor Francis Galbally against president Mark Korda and his board.
Galbally is seeking access to the club’s register of members as part of a bid to support businessman Jeff Browne’s proposed takeover of the board.
Justice Riordan will set out a timetable for a hearing — likely to be held in late September or October — and make orders for the filing of submissions on August 27.
Galbally’s high-powered legal team have accused Collingwood of breaching section 173 of the Corporations Act in refusing to disclose the membership register.
Galbally, who has engaged leading corporate lawyer James Macdonald from Piper Alderman, top silk Chris Blanden QC and commercial barrister Tim Dowling, claims the Magpies are attempting to stonewall a democratic club election.
Collingwood has also lawyered up, engaging top dispute resolution lawyer Leon Zwier of Arnold Bloch Liebler to assist in the stand-off.
Galbally was the Magpies’ honorary solicitor from 1976-94 and is a prominent Melbourne businessman.
“I have become increasingly concerned about the governance and overall direction of the club,” Galbally said in an affidavit filed with the court last month.
“A number of key issues have arisen recently, including not only the direction of the club and its football department, but also the purported appointment of Ms Bridie O’Donnell as a director of the club, the resignation of Mr Nathan Buckley as the senior coach of the club, and issues related to the handling of the club’s salary cap.”
In a change of tactics unveiled last week, Browne, 66, said he would now seek to spill all seven Collingwood board positions at the club’s annual general meeting on December 16.
Browne’s bid to force a spill at the AGM will only involve the gathering of 100 fresh signatures instead of the higher hurdle of five per cent of the club’s members needed for an extraordinary general meeting.
The register of members is needed by the Browne camp to verify the signatures required to requisition resolutions to be put to the December AGM.

Media Clippings Interim Collingwood coach Robert Harvey says he is yet to discuss his future with the Magpies’ hierarchy as he focuses on steering his side through the last two games of the season. Bested by Hawthorn and Alastair Clarkson – the man set to be courted by the Pies at season’s end – at the MCG on Sunday, Harvey says he is enjoying the caretaker role. “It’s just trying to get all the pieces together and trying to get what we are trying to achieve in this last nine weeks (since he took over),” Harvey said. “I do enjoy seeing the players trying to get the best out of themselves, young and old. I’d like to win a few more games, yes, and that’s disappointing, but, in the end, it is good fun, I like it, it’s what I do.” Alastair Clarkson’s stunning Hawthorn stint is finishing on an upswing after his side recorded its second consecutive win thanks to a blistering first half performance against Collingwood. The Hawks stifled Collingwood across the first two and a half quarters, dominating the uncontested possession count to kick 12 of the first 16 goals of the game. The Magpies pushed hard in the closing stages of the final two quarters with goal rushes, but the Hawks had all the answers — and the scoreboard ascendancy after a dominant start — to run out 19-point winners, 15.7 (97) to 12.6 (78). The Hawks enjoyed the width of the wings, constantly sliced their way through Collingwood’s defence and stamped their authority in the second stanza, when a typical Ben McEvoy contested mark deep in the forward line catalysed a crucial four-goal-to-two term. If the warning bells had not yet sounded in Collingwood’s coaches’ box, they were surely bellowing beneath the empty MCG in the changerooms by half-time, after the Pies had managed only three of the game’s first 11 goals. ... The Magpies had another antagonist to contend with – themselves. Though the clanger count was on even terms, the Hawks scored nine of their opening 10 goals from turnovers, and feasted on the Pies’ inability to protect the ball beyond the halfway point of the ground. Collingwood’s issues quickly compounded in the third term, and when Hawthorn booted four of quarter’s first five goals, the Hawks looked like a side playing on the spirit of Clarkson’s premiership teams of the past. A MUCH-IMPROVED Hawthorn has continued its recent dominance of Collingwood and all but ensured it will avoid the wooden spoon this season with a 19-point upset victory over the Magpies at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. The impressive 15.7 (97) to 12.6 (78) triumph moves Hawthorn in front of Collingwood and up to 15th on the ladder as it continues its end of season resurgence under outgoing mentor and four-time premiership winning coach Alastair Clarkson. It was an eight-goal-to-three opening half that helped set the Hawks on their way, with much of the same after half-time as they made it 13 wins from their last 15 matches against Collingwood. The Pies did send a minor scare through the Hawthorn camp when they closed to within 19 points with seven minutes remaining in the contest, but it was too little too late as the Hawks held on for a much-deserved victory. |

Tasmanian authorities have decided to pull out of hosting its scheduled AFL game between Collingwood and Hawthorn. The game was set to be played on Sunday at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston, but has been canned over fresh Covid fears. Premier Peter Gutwein announced the decision after the state recorded its first Covid-19 case in 12 months. In response to the cancellation, the AFL has announced the game will go ahead at the MCG at the same time (Sunday 2:10pm AEST) as had originally been scheduled. “The health and safety of everyone in the game and the wider community remains the priority as we continue to navigate the pandemic and the AFL thanks all supporters for their understanding as we continue to be led by the advice of governments and public health officials,” a representative for the AFL wrote in a statement. Sunday’s game was set to be the Magpies’ first for premiership points in Tasmania in their 129-year history. |
