What The Pies Coach Said

"Last year when we played them they opened us up out the back a couple of times so we focussed on that so it didn't occur as much and we think defensively we did a good job which help set-up our game."  Collingwood coach Steve Symonds

Media Clippings

Collingwood has strengthened its NAB AFL Women's premiership credentials, shooting to the top of the table with a scorching 35-point win over a wasteful Melbourne on Sunday. Star forward Chloe Molloy was unstoppable with three goals as the Pies extended their winning streak to a club-record five straight victories in the 7.7 (49) to 1.8 (14) result at Victoria Park. ... Molloy finished the game on the bench after a crunching hit to her shoulder in the dying stages but is expected to be right to face the Western Bulldogs next week. However, Pies forward Jordan Membrey will have further assessment on a knee injury that ended her day midway through the third quarter. The win leaves the Pies as the only unbeaten team in the competition after the inaugural round five NAB AFLW Indigenous Round.

Collingwood remain the AFLW’s only undefeated team after running out comfortable victors over an inaccurate Melbourne at Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon. Melbourne wasn’t just feeling the heat of the late-summer sun, with Collingwood’s pressure and skilful ball movement enough to defeat the Dees by 35 points, keeping them on the winners’ list for the fifth week in a row. ... Time slows down when the ball is in Chloe Molloy’s hands, and a glorious patch of play early in the first quarter demonstrated her ability to make magic out of nowhere. Molly twisted and turned amid traffic, managing to evade the three Melbourne players who tried to stop her. Her three-goal haul saw her extend her unbroken run of kicking at least one goal each game, overtaking Carlton spearhead Tayla Harris to hold the outright record of eight weeks.

Newman Returns

Aliesha Newman will return to the Collingwood side for the game against Melbourne.

The speedy forward has worked her way back into the side having been omitted from the Pies round four side who claimed a 20-point victory over North.

She replaces midfielder Sarah Rowe, who sustained an injury to her shoulder during last week’s match. The Irish cross-coder is set to be sidelined for 2-3 weeks.

It will be the first occasion Newman will come face-to-face with her former side.

Abbi Moloney and Kristy Stratton have been named emergencies for the match.

The Pies will be looking to make it five from five when return to their spiritual home at Victoria Park.
Round 5 will mark the inaugural AFLW Indigenous Round, as the league celebrates and highlights the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to the game of football and in our country.

The Pies will return home to Victoria Park to take on Melbourne, as both sides look to solidify their position within the top six.

Coming off Round 4

Collingwood remain one of just two undefeated sides, following a commanding 20-point victory over North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium last Saturday.

The Round 4 win came through a solid team performance, with Chloe Molloy booting two goals up forward, Brianna Davey leading the midfield with 31 disposals and the backline holding the Kangaroos goalless for the first time in AFLW history.

An eye on the opposition

The Demons were dealt their first loss of the season when they went down to a tenacious Bulldogs outfit on their home deck at Whitten Oval.

Despite dominating the contest, inaccuracy was the Dees undoing as they found themselves unable to capitalise on a forward-fifty ledger skewed heavily in their favour.

Aliesha Newman wears Pies Indigenous guernsey

Melbourne will be eager to atone for last week’s mistakes and return to the form which saw them defeat the Pies to the tune of 20 points the last time the two sides met in Round 4 of the 2020 AFLW season.

Consistent pressure across four quarters will be key for the Pies in order to limit the Dees’ forward opportunity and take home the four points.

Pies to look out for

Jordan Membrey has provided yet another dimension to an already dangerous forward dynamic after returning from an ankle injury a fortnight ago.

The Pies’ leading goalkicker for the 2020 season registered one major from her eight disposals last week, capped off by a courageous mark running back with the flight of the ball.

Stacey Livingstone can stake claim to a feat that no other can, playing the general down back in a side that held the Kangaroos goalless for the first time in AFLW history.

Livingstone finished with a season-high 16 disposals (including 13 kicks) and eight marks in a herculean effort to get the Pies over the line.

Indigenous Round

The squad will continue to show their support for the Free the Flag campaign, wearing t-shirts during the warm-up this week, and for the remainder of their 2021 campaign.

The team will also wear the club’s Indigenous guernsey designed by Ross Morgan Senior and his sons, highlighting the Yorta Yorta culture.

The story behind the design comes from the Cummeragunja Walk Off, which was a protest by Aboriginal people at Cummeragunja Station. It is remembered as an act of strength and resilience.

Collingwood forward, Aliesha Newman has also been involved in designing the league’s Indigenous logo for the round.

What The Pies Coach Said

"It was a red-hot game, it was a really contested game and both teams were going really hard at it. We made a couple of little errors, but our ability to keep at it and go to task was really important. Whether our group could have done that 12 months ago, I'm not sure."  Collingwood coach Steve Symonds

Media Clippings

Collingwood made an emphatic statement in quelling offensive powerhouse North Melbourne, firming as a premiership favourite with a rousing 20-point triumph. The Pies put the clamps on the Kangaroos in the heavyweight clash at Marvel Stadium, keeping them goalless for the entire match as defensive pillars Ruby Schleicher and Stacey Livingstone stood tall. The Kangaroos remained in the game until the dangerous Chloe Molloy, who kicked a goal of the year contender in the first term, snapped her second major in the early stages of the fourth quarter to put the result beyond doubt. Superstar midfielder Brianna Davey won a game-high 31 disposals in yet another dominant midfield display, combining magnificently with inside bulls Jamie Lambert and Brittany Bonnici.

COLLINGWOOD has staked its claim as a flag contender, strangling North Melbourne in a 20-point victory on Saturday night. It was a match which had been hyped as a battle of the heavyweights, but the Roos wilted under pressure, held goalless for the first time ever in the 4.4 (28) to 0.8 (8) result at Marvel Stadium. ... Collingwood sliced North Melbourne open the way the Kangaroos have done to so many teams in their short time in the competition, and the pressure caused usually sure-handed Roos to fumble.

The last time North Melbourne lost two consecutive games was 2019, but on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium, an undefeated Collingwood side handed them just their fourth ever AFLW loss. The Magpies lost to the Roos by two points in last year’s semi-final, and their thirst for redemption was clear. Collingwood were first on the board thanks to gaelic footballer Aishling Sheridan, which was followed by a snap goal from teammate Chloe Molloy.

"It was a bit of a slog for both teams. We knew Richmond were strong in the circle, their contested ball is actually really, really good, so we knew it would be tough. As the game broke open, we started to use the ball quite well. All in all, we'll take the win, we haven't been 3-0 before or had three straight wins, so we're happy we're starting the season off that way."  Collingwood coach Steve Symonds

    Media Clippings
    Canberra Times

Collingwood remain unbeaten this AFLW season after accounting for struggling Richmond by 17 points. The Magpies inflicted more pain on the Tigers, as they led from start to finish at Punt Rd on Sunday to run out winners 7.6 (48) to 4.7 (31). The Tigers gained enough of the ball, particularly in the second term, but lacked polish up forward and finished with just four goals from 32 inside-50 entries to Collingwood's 25.

      AFLW

COLLINGWOOD'S powerful unbeaten start to the season has continued with a polished 17-point win over a dogged Richmond. The Tigers' quest for a first win continues despite pushing the Magpies harder than the scoreboard suggested. ... Collingwood's ball movement was magnificent at times; the players didn't get sucked into the contest, spreading well and allowing for clean disposal chains.

      The Age

The gap between the AFLW’s top and bottom clubs was again laid bare on Sunday as red-hot Collingwood maintained their unbeaten start to the season and inflicted a ninth straight loss on Richmond. Playing behind closed doors at Punt Road, the Tigers never seriously threatened to break their competition duck as the Pies’ superior class shone through. Collingwood had braced for Richmond to challenge the Pies on the inside and to the Tigers’ credit, they scrapped well. But the Magpies were much cleaner with the ball, as Brittany Bonnici, Brianna Davey and Jaimee Lambert led the way in the middle.

Collingwood has made three changes to its line-up for Sunday's clash against Richmond.

The Magpies forward line will be boosted with the addition of 2020 Leading Goal Kicker, Jordan Membrey who's set to make her first appearance of the season.

Joining her up forward is Aliesha Newman who missed last week's match as she served a one-match suspension.

Rounding out the inclusions is third year Magpie, Jordyn Allen. She’ll return to the backline having been a late out from last week’s match due to illness.

Amelia Velardo has been omitted from the match while Erica Fowler and Bella Smith are listed as emergencies.

Round two debutant, Joanna Lin has maintain a spot in Sunday's side being named on the wing.

The round three match will mark the first occasion the Pies and Tigers will meet. Collingwood's two-time best and fairest winner, Jaimee Lambert will also run out for her 30th AFLW game.

"It was tough early, but we knew Geelong would come at us. They certainly applied the pressure and we struggled a bit. We weren't very clean. But once the second half got going, we got our rhythm going a little bit more and started to make some wiser decisions with the ball and started winning the contest a little bit more."  – Collingwood coach Steve Symonds

      Media Clippings
      Herald Sun

Debate has raged over Brianna Davey’s best position and her Herculean effort in the clinches stamped her authority as one of the premier midfielders in the competition. It was Davey’s day at Victoria Park as the Collingwood skipper willed her side over the line against an improved Geelong outfit, winning 25 disposals and booting a crucial goal in the 29-point win. Geelong came out with a point to prove following their dour defeat last week, slotting the opening two goals, but were kept goalless from there on as the Magpies controlled proceedings. This dominance did not show on the scoreboard until the final quarter when the floodgates opened, the Magpies piling on 3.5 to the Cats’ one behind.

        AFLW

COLLINGWOOD continues to build the perfect platform for its AFLW season, outlasting a brave Geelong side to win by 29 points in an arm-wrestle of a contest at Victoria Park on Saturday. The Magpies recovered a relatively slow start, with the quality of Brianna Davey eventually rising to the fore as the club's co-captain inspired her side to a gritty 6.9 (45) to 2.4 (16) victory. Davey had 25 disposals, four clearances and kicked the game's sealing goal in the final quarter, with her grunt in the midfield throughout the match ultimately helping to swing a hard-fought contest in Collingwood's favour.

        The Age

Collingwood overcame a sluggish start on Saturday to continue their perfect opening to the AFLW season with a 29-point win over Geelong at Victoria Park. The Cats kicked two of the first three goals, but the Magpies, inspired by co-captain Brianna Davey, clicked into gear after quarter-time, booting the last five majors of the game, to run out 6.9 (45) to 2.4 (16) winners.  The margin could have been much bigger if the inaccurate Magpies made the most of their inside-50 advantage (36-22).

Collingwood has made one change for Saturday’s Pride Game against Geelong with Speedy midfielder, Sarah Rowe added to the side.

The Irish cross-coder missed last week’s season opener as she was managed for a shoulder issue.

The Pies will be without small forward, Aliesha Newman who received a one-match ban for a dangerous tackle in last week's clash against the Blues.

Joanna Lin and Kristy Stratton have been named as emergencies.

        Pride Round

For the first time, a competition wide Pride Round will be held during round two of the AFL Women’s season.

The round is an opportunity to celebrate diversity across the league and is another step closer towards becoming a more inclusive game.

As part of the round, the Pies will wear Pride rainbow socks. Pride flags will also be handed out at the gate to attendees on game day.

Additionally, all AFL Umpires will wear rainbow-coloured sweat bands, while Goal Umpires will use rainbow flags. The 50-metre arc ground markings will also be painted rainbow for the occasion.

While the Magpies were originally due to meet the Gold Coast Suns, recent changes in government restrictions across the country caused a late fixturing change with the Pies now set to face Geelong.
