Land of the giants: Pies' forward line a scary proposition in 2022
OPPOSITION clubs are steeling themselves for a much taller Collingwood forward line in 2022.

Collingwood News - Sarah Black

OPPOSITION clubs are steeling themselves for a much taller Collingwood forward line in 2022. The Magpies primarily ran with Chloe Molloy (171cm) and Sophie Alexander (178cm) as their primary targets last season, with draftees Abbi Moloney and Amelia Velardo playing two games each.

But fresh off a heart-breaking four-point preliminary final loss to Brisbane, Collingwood have brought in two tall forwards in the form of ex-Tiger Sabrina Frederick (182cm) and VFLW leading goalkicker Imogen Barnett (176cm) to make an intriguing selection mix.

"Our forward line gets talked about a lot, and I think that's just what happens at AFLW level, because everyone's trying to find the best forward combination and improve the scoring of the game," coach Steve Symonds told womens.afl.

"We're no different from other teams, we're still looking for the best mixture of what our forward line looks like and it's a work in progress.

"We found in finals, against the better teams, they were wary about Chloe, and she sometimes found herself in two-on-one situations. She's not a tall girl, so we thought by bringing a couple of tall targets in, it would take the load of Chloe and allow her to be more creative – what she's best at.

"That might mean Chloe could play more in through the midfield at times than what she's done in the past.

"We just thought it gives us a few more options, and it doesn't mean we won't do what we did last year and play smaller up forward, but we now have options where we can do it if it suits for our team."

It's a common refrain among football clubs, but consistency will be Collingwood's biggest goal for the 2022 season, both across matches and within games themselves.

The Pies shot out of the blocks in 2021, recording six straight wins, but faltered against Brisbane and Adelaide, the eventual grand finalists.

"We know that when we start to get things right, we're more than competitive against some of the better teams in the competition. Possibly a few years ago, the team's belief wasn't at that level," Symonds said.

"We still have moments within games – and even though we won a lot of games last year, there were still moments within them where we didn't play to our full potential, our level or stick to our processes. Consistency is probably our biggest thing.

"The game is full of moments. Even that final against Brisbane, there was a whole heap of little moments, the ball bouncing on the line and went the wrong way, if it had gone the other way, the whole outcome of the season could have been different.

"The whole game is full of them, so (we focus on) what do we do in those moments, how do we react and how do we get over those situations and get things on track if they haven't gone right."

At this stage, Collingwood has virtually a full squad to choose from for its round one clash against Carlton. Young winger Joanna Lin has had an operation on her shoulder, but is expected to play at some point this season.

"Whilst we've shown some good improvement over the last few years, the girls were bitterly disappointed at the end of last season. It takes a lot of hard work to give yourself a chance to play in the Grand Final, and to fall so short at the end," Symonds said.

"I think all bar one person – and that was injury-affected – came back and broke PBs, whether that was strength or running, so it's a good sign and they've carried that mindset through the pre-season."

The Pies tried hard throughout and even looked the better side at times, but were ultimately outclassed by their more experienced opponents as they slumped to a 16th loss for the season. Midfield duo Taylor Adams (31 disposals and 10 clearances) and Jordan De Goey (23 touches) won plenty of the ball, while goal-sneak Jamie Elliott played a lone hand up forward with four goals. ... The last 12 months haven't been great for the Magpie Army, but there are enough positive signs coming out of the Holden Centre to think a rapid rise up the ladder won't be too far away. The nucleus of Brodie Grundy, Taylor Adams, Darcy Moore, Jordan De Goey and Jack Crisp are still in their prime, while teenagers Jack Ginnivan, Jay Rantall, Oliver Henry and Finlay Macrae have shown enough this season to prove they will be around for some time. Throw another talented Daicos into the mix and Nathan Buckley's successor has plenty to work with in 2022 and beyond.

The Dons had secured an unlikely return to the finals, the Pies had long been playing out time in a tumultuous year for the club, and the two sides produced the type of bruise-free football associated with such a low-stakes game. Had this been cricket, the players would’ve shaken hands 20 minutes into the third quarter, the Bombers content with first innings points and the Pies glad to get on the end-of-season beers 45 minutes early.

ROUND 23
Bye Bye 2021

Ross Lyon has revealed he turned down an approach from Collingwood regarding their senior coaching position due to the “instability” at the club.

The former St Kilda and Fremantle coach has been the hot tip to take over at either Collingwood or arch-rivals Carlton, who are expected to part ways with coach David Teague – who is contracted through 2022 and maintains he is the right man for the job – in coming weeks.

After initially suggesting that he wasn’t interested in returning to AFL coaching circles, Lyon has changed his tune in the last week, and he revealed an advance from Magpies football boss Graham Wright.

“I don’t think Graham Wright would mind, he reached out to a friend to get my number and I was aware and just said respectfully I wouldn’t entertain that for a variety of reasons,” Lyon told Nine’s Footy Classified.

“It’s hard to articulate. Sometimes it’s just sometimes just chemistry.”

Collingwood has been shrouded by off-field controversy all season, with a battle for the presidency taking place behind the scenes between the incumbent Mark Korda and challenger Jeff Browne. Lyon admitted the boardroom antics played a part in his decision.

“If you get a headhunter ring you and you go and meet them and you go for the job, if you haven’t got that chemistry, that happens pretty quick, well it doesn’t happen or it shouldn’t happen,” he said. “If Ed [McGuire] was president of Collingwood it’d be a different story.”

“I think it’s instability. I think Nathan’s a bit unlucky. I don’t know Nathan, Nathan’s not a friend, but just from the outside ... I think if you see misalignment it’s a red flag.”

Grand Final
Galbally v Korda

Collingwood’s boardroom brawl will go before a Supreme Court judge at the end of this month.

Supreme Court Justice Peter Riordan has been allocated to oversee a proceeding brought by long-time Magpies solicitor Francis Galbally against president Mark Korda and his board.

Galbally is seeking access to the club’s register of members as part of a bid to support businessman Jeff Browne’s proposed takeover of the board.

Justice Riordan will set out a timetable for a hearing — likely to be held in late September or October — and make orders for the filing of submissions on August 27.

Galbally’s high-powered legal team have accused Collingwood of breaching section 173 of the Corporations Act in refusing to disclose the membership register.

Galbally, who has engaged leading corporate lawyer James Macdonald from Piper Alderman, top silk Chris Blanden QC and commercial barrister Tim Dowling, claims the Magpies are attempting to stonewall a democratic club election.

Collingwood has also lawyered up, engaging top dispute resolution lawyer Leon Zwier of Arnold Bloch Liebler to assist in the stand-off.

Galbally was the Magpies’ honorary solicitor from 1976-94 and is a prominent Melbourne businessman.

“I have become increasingly concerned about the governance and overall direction of the club,” Galbally said in an affidavit filed with the court last month.

“A number of key issues have arisen recently, including not only the direction of the club and its football department, but also the purported appointment of Ms Bridie O’Donnell as a director of the club, the resignation of Mr Nathan Buckley as the senior coach of the club, and issues related to the handling of the club’s salary cap.”

In a change of tactics unveiled last week, Browne, 66, said he would now seek to spill all seven Collingwood board positions at the club’s annual general meeting on December 16.

Browne’s bid to force a spill at the AGM will only involve the gathering of 100 fresh signatures instead of the higher hurdle of five per cent of the club’s members needed for an extraordinary general meeting.

The register of members is needed by the Browne camp to verify the signatures required to requisition resolutions to be put to the December AGM.

Interim Collingwood coach Robert Harvey says he is yet to discuss his future with the Magpies’ hierarchy as he focuses on steering his side through the last two games of the season. Bested by Hawthorn and Alastair Clarkson – the man set to be courted by the Pies at season’s end – at the MCG on Sunday, Harvey says he is enjoying the caretaker role. “It’s just trying to get all the pieces together and trying to get what we are trying to achieve in this last nine weeks (since he took over),” Harvey said. “I do enjoy seeing the players trying to get the best out of themselves, young and old. I’d like to win a few more games, yes, and that’s disappointing, but, in the end, it is good fun, I like it, it’s what I do.”

Alastair Clarkson’s stunning Hawthorn stint is finishing on an upswing after his side recorded its second consecutive win thanks to a blistering first half performance against Collingwood. The Hawks stifled Collingwood across the first two and a half quarters, dominating the uncontested possession count to kick 12 of the first 16 goals of the game. The Magpies pushed hard in the closing stages of the final two quarters with goal rushes, but the Hawks had all the answers — and the scoreboard ascendancy after a dominant start — to run out 19-point winners, 15.7 (97) to 12.6 (78).

The Hawks enjoyed the width of the wings, constantly sliced their way through Collingwood’s defence and stamped their authority in the second stanza, when a typical Ben McEvoy contested mark deep in the forward line catalysed a crucial four-goal-to-two term. If the warning bells had not yet sounded in Collingwood’s coaches’ box, they were surely bellowing beneath the empty MCG in the changerooms by half-time, after the Pies had managed only three of the game’s first 11 goals. ... The Magpies had another antagonist to contend with – themselves. Though the clanger count was on even terms, the Hawks scored nine of their opening 10 goals from turnovers, and feasted on the Pies’ inability to protect the ball beyond the halfway point of the ground. Collingwood’s issues quickly compounded in the third term, and when Hawthorn booted four of quarter’s first five goals, the Hawks looked like a side playing on the spirit of Clarkson’s premiership teams of the past.

A MUCH-IMPROVED Hawthorn has continued its recent dominance of Collingwood and all but ensured it will avoid the wooden spoon this season with a 19-point upset victory over the Magpies at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. The impressive 15.7 (97) to 12.6 (78) triumph moves Hawthorn in front of Collingwood and up to 15th on the ladder as it continues its end of season resurgence under outgoing mentor and four-time premiership winning coach Alastair Clarkson. It was an eight-goal-to-three opening half that helped set the Hawks on their way, with much of the same after half-time as they made it 13 wins from their last 15 matches against Collingwood. The Pies did send a minor scare through the Hawthorn camp when they closed to within 19 points with seven minutes remaining in the contest, but it was too little too late as the Hawks held on for a much-deserved victory.

Round 21
Collingwood v Hawthorn

Tasmanian authorities have decided to pull out of hosting its scheduled AFL game between Collingwood and Hawthorn.

The game was set to be played on Sunday at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston, but has been canned over fresh Covid fears.

Premier Peter Gutwein announced the decision after the state recorded its first Covid-19 case in 12 months.

In response to the cancellation, the AFL has announced the game will go ahead at the MCG at the same time (Sunday 2:10pm AEST) as had originally been scheduled.

“The health and safety of everyone in the game and the wider community remains the priority as we continue to navigate the pandemic and the AFL thanks all supporters for their understanding as we continue to be led by the advice of governments and public health officials,” a representative for the AFL wrote in a statement.

Sunday’s game was set to be the Magpies’ first for premiership points in Tasmania in their 129-year history.

Collingwood gave its fans a delicious taste of the future and West Coast an anxious next three weeks on the back of a 45-point smashing. The Pies’ faster and braver ball use under Robert Harvey was on full show, owning the corridor and opening up their forward 50, taking 18 marks inside 50. Collingwood was able to control the ball and showed West Coast up with its superior work rate around the ground on their way to 155 uncontested marks. ... Collingwood got their customary jump on the Eagles in the first quarter on the back of brave and precise ball movement. The Pies looked inside whenever they could, but importantly didn’t use the corridor for the sake of it. Stand-in skipper Steele Sidebottom, Jamie Elliott, Will Hoskin-Elliott kicked goals before Jack Ginnivan nailed a 50-metre bomb for the first goals of his career to give Collingwood a 21-point quarter-time lead. If Pies supporters thought they were in dreamland in the first quarter they hadn’t seen anything yet. Collingwood played its best footy of the season during a six goal to one second term.

Collingwood has delivered a mightily comprehensive win against the odds, upsetting a horrendously poor West Coast side to place further doubts on the Eagles’ finals credentials. In a remarkable result, the young Magpies kicked the first eight goals of the game and took a whopping 155 uncontested marks to West Coast’s 93 to obliterate Adam Simpson’s side. Despite four late goals to the Eagles, the Magpies were never fazed as they ran out 45-point winners, 14.6 (90) to 6.9 (45). ...  As bad as the Eagles were, this was arguably the most thrilling Collingwood performance of 2021 so far. We’d seen glimpses in recent weeks of a new, faster style under caretaker coach Robert Harvey. On Saturday afternoon, Pies fans saw it for four quarters – and it was brilliant. Yes West Coast’s pressure was deplorable and allowed the Pies to play with great freedom. But with ball in hand, the Pies played with terrific dash and dare, which translated onto the scoreboard.

Collingwood have torn apart West Coast at the MCG, kicking 10 goals to one in the opening half to embarrass the Eagles once again away from home in a performance by the visitors that lacked care and effort. The Magpies did everything that the Eagles did not, putting pressure on the opposition when they didn’t have the ball and moving the ball quickly with sharp kicks and handballs when they did win possession, ending with 12 individual goalkickers in the 45-point win. It was a result that would make candidates for the Magpies’ coaching job double down on their efforts to win the vacant post. The half-time margin was an indictment on the Eagles as it was premiership skipper Shannon Hurn’s 300th game – the first Eagle to reach the milestone – but it was not out of character given their 90 point-plus defeats against Geelong and Sydney earlier in the year. This time Collingwood scored 90 points to double the Eagles’ final score.

COLLINGWOOD has delivered a stunning blow to West Coast’s finals hopes with an incredible 45-point victory at the MCG on Saturday. In premiership captain Shannon Hurn’s 300th game, the Eagles barely offered a yelp, conceding the first eight goals of the game before eventually going down 14.6 (90) to 6.9 (45). Acting captain Steele Sidebottom led from the front with 33 disposals and a goal, while Jordan De Goey also impressed with 34 touches and a game-high 518 metres gained.

Round 20
Collingwood v West Coast

STEELE Sidebottom will replace Scott Pendlebury as Collingwood captain against West Coast on Saturday before the top job is rotated for the remainder of the season.

Pendlebury will sit out the rest of the campaign with a fractured leg he sustained against Port Adelaide last week in what could prove to be his last match as skipper.

The gun veteran is poised to sign a one-year extension for 2022, however has previously flagged the prospect of finishing his career without the title as captain.

Sidebottom and his fellow vice-captains Taylor Adams and Jeremy Howe, who will play his first game since round five, will share the mantle for the final three matches after this weekend.

The high-flying defender first injured his hamstring against the Eagles in Perth before he was sent for surgery to remove scar tissue in the hamstring that was aggravated while pushing for a return in May.

Interim coach Robert Harvey defended the decision to play Howe for the last month of the season with the Pies out of finals contention.

"From his point of view, he really is a great leader so he wants to get back and help this group with four games to go, he feels he can really help that," Harvey said on Thursday.

A bid to force a spill of the Collingwood board has landed in the Victorian Supreme Court.

In a dramatic escalation of the Magpies’ board fight, former club solicitor Francis Galbally has lodged a Supreme Court application aimed at expediting the staging of an extraordinary general meeting.

Galbally’s lawyers are seeking orders for Collingwood to hand over a copy of the club’s register of members, needed to validate the signatures of thousands of supporters gathered to trigger a spill of the Mark Korda-led board.

A hearing before a judge of the Supreme Court could be held within weeks.

In an affidavit signed by Galbally, Collingwood is accused of breaching section 173 of the Corporations Act in refusing to disclose its membership register.

“I have become increasingly concerned about the governance and overall direction of the club,” Galbally says.

Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury fears he has broken his leg after coming off injured in the 28-point loss to Port Adelaide on Friday night. Pendlebury limped from the field during the first quarter with what the club said was a lower leg injury then was substituted at quarter-time. The 33-year-old told ABC radio post-game he believed it might be broken because it felt a little similar to the pain he experienced when he fractured it previously. Pendlebury said he was really sore around the bone in the middle of his leg and the muscle around that was quite tight. “I’ve broken my leg before and it’s a little bit similar to the pain I experienced with that,” he said on ABC Radio. “It’s really sore around the bone and the middle of my leg and the leg muscle around that is really tight. I tried to run and kick and it didn’t feel right.”.

Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury fears he may have suffered a broken leg during his side’s clash with Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium. The 33-year-old was subbed out of Friday night’s game at quarter-time after landing awkwardly during a first-term tackle. Pendlebury limped off the ground during the first quarter and went straight down to the rooms to be further assessed by the Collingwood medical staff. After emerging from the rooms, he attempted to prove his fitness by doing some run-throughs along the boundary line. But he failed in his attempts to be re-introduced into the match. Collingwood confirmed Pendlebury had suffered a knock to the lower leg just above the ankle. Speaking to ABC Sport after the match, Pendlebury said the setback felt similar to an incident he suffered a decade ago. “I’ve broken my leg before and it was a little bit similar to the pain I experienced with that,” Pendlebury told ABC Sport, as reported by broadcaster Corbin Middlemas on Twitter. “It’s really sore around the bone in the middle of my leg and the muscle around that as well is really tight. I tried to run or kick and it didn’t feel right. Hopefully it’s not broken, but we’ll get a scan tomorrow and see.”

Port Adelaide celebrated club legend Travis Boak’s landmark 300th match in style after overcoming a valiant challenge from Collingwood to win by 28 points at Marvel Stadium. The Magpies were hard-at-it early and showed splashes of spark in the second half but were unable to completely shake off the loss of captain Scott Pendlebury in the opening term. Pendlebury suffered a lower leg knock while being dragged down from behind by Willem Drew and was substituted out of the contest at quarter-time. Pendlebury’s long-time midfield rival Boak would never have envisaged an empty Marvel Stadium for a “home” match being the way he reached the milestone, equalling Kane Cornes’ AFL club record.

COLLINGWOOD coach Robert Harvey says the decision to use tall forward Mason Cox as the medical substitute didn't hurt his team's ability to run out Friday night's clash against Port Adelaide. The Magpies lost captain Scott Pendlebury to a lower leg injury in the first quarter of the 28-point loss at Marvel Stadium, with the star midfielder comparing the pain of his injury to a broken leg in a post-match interview. Harvey said the club would wait on scans before declaring the extent of the injury and Pendlebury had been moving around well post-match. The coach said he was happy with how his team had covered the midfielder's loss and the addition of another tall forward did not affect the Magpies' ability to run out the game. "We were a really young team tonight and we didn't have a lot in reserve in regard to experienced players," Harvey said when asked if he was happy with the decision to select Cox as the medical sub. "I know Mason was quieter and could have done more, but in the end I thought we were really positive in how we entered the ball inside 50. Through where we're at I thought that was the best call and that's the way we went. We looked like we were running on top of the ground, so I didn't think that was an issue."

Round 19
Collingwood v Port Adelaide

Collingwood will blood their eighth and ninth debutant of the season against Port Adelaide on Friday night.

Irishman Anton Tohill and forward Jack Ginnivan will don the black and white for the first time, with interim coach Robert Harvey announcing the news to the playing group on Wednesday.

Tohill's journey started when he signed as a rookie at the Magpies in 2018, the 200cm defender has been impressing in recent VFL games and will line up in the back six against the Power.

“He’s after a long journey from Ireland and he has worked really, really hard at his game. He is a 200cm supreme athlete with the ability to run and jump. He has worked hard on aerial craft and can play up forward as well as down back,” Harvey said.

Ginnivan, a product of the Bendigo Pioneers, was Collingwood’s first selection in last year’s Rookie Draft. The 18-year-old has strung together impressive performances in the second-tier competition, with the senior coach saying he's earned selection off the back of 11 goals in three weeks.

"He's a great country kid from Bendigo, really honest," Harvey said.

"He's really popular amongst the boys. He's worked really hard on his game. He's a natural small forward."

Finlay Macrae comes back into the line-up for his sixth AFL game.

Off the short turnaround, veteran Chris Mayne will be managed after a minor ankle roll during the clash against Carlton.

As noted earlier in the week, Callum Brown (shoulder) and Josh Thomas (concussion) were ruled out of round 19, while Will Hoskin-Elliott (back) hasn't got up for the match.

Among the emergencies and in the mix to be named as medical substitute is Mason Cox, Max Lynch, Brayden Sier, and Tom Wilson.
