“You look at it and you go, ‘0.7 at half-time,’ and you think, ‘We’re not playing that bad, we were in the game. We were 16 inside-50s to 14 with eight minutes to go in the second quarter, we had more opportunity to score than the opposition and we hadn’t got a goal on the board and they had three or four. There are some elements we need to work on but we’re getting games [into players]. Over the last three or four weeks I think we’re tracking in the right direction. We’re playing some pretty good sides and we’ve been very competitive. If we keep focusing on working together and finding our best, the wins will come.” - Nathan Buckley

Media Clippings

A third-quarter injury to Collingwood’s best player has rubbed salt into the wound of a third-straight loss that has plunged the Magpies’ season further into the mire. Grundy was contesting a mark on centre-wing when he went down with what looked to be a right shoulder injury but was, in fact, an injury to his neck. He was subbed out halfway through the quarter and later taken to hospital. The severity of the injury was unknown, but it looks likely to keep the All-Australian ruckman out for at least next week. ... The injury came after Grundy, ironically, had delivered the Pies first goal of the match — in the first minute of the third-quarter — the first time in 116 years Collingwood had failed to kick a goal in the first half at the MCG.Saturday’s opening half was also the second time in three weeks the Magpies have gone back-to-back quarters without registering a major.

A picture might be able to paint 1000 words, but the MCG scoreboard certainly couldn't on Saturday. On the face of it, Collingwood's 10-point loss to Geelong might not have been so bad. Dig a little deeper, though, and this was another defining day in an already turbulent Magpies season. Collingwood endured a goalless first half for the first time since 2005 at the MCG, mustering a measly one major to the final change. Only a late flourish, where the Pies added a host of junk-time goals, would lessen the damage by the final siren. Instead, they had the Cats to thank for the fact the 8.13 (61) to 6.15 (51) scoreline wasn't far more dramatic. Last year's Grand Finalists weren't necessarily firing on all cylinders, but barely needed to escape second gear to cruise to a comfortable four points. A neck injury to dual Collingwood best and fairest Brodie Grundy, which forced the two-time All-Australian to be substituted out of the match midway through the third quarter, compounded issues for the Magpies.

Star Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy has been taken to hospital for scans and further assessment on a neck injury he sustained during his side’s loss to Geelong on Saturday. Grundy was competing in a marking contest with Cats ruckman Rhys Stanley in the third term before his head was wrenched back mid-air and he landed awkwardly on his right forearm. The dual All-Australian was immediately taken down into the rooms for further assessment. Soon afterwards, Collingwood confirmed Grundy had been subbed out of the game, with Finlay Macrae replacing him. It was initially feared Grundy had hurt his AC joint, but the Pies confirmed to Fox Footy at three quarter-time he’d sustained a neck injury. As play continued in the final quarter at the MCG, Grundy was taken to hospital for precautionary scans with the club concerned he’d pinched a nerve in his neck.

Round 11
Collingwood v Geelong

Collingwood is set to blood its seventh debutant of the season with midfielder Trent Bianco to pull on the black and white against Geelong on Saturday afternoon.

A knee injury hampered Bianco's pre-season, but in recent weeks has impressed at VFL level, averaging 26 disposals, 7.5 tackles and a goal.

Bianco is known to be a creative playmaker with elite decision making and execution by both hand and foot on both sides of his body.

Nathan Murphy makes his way back into the line-up, while Brayden Sier earns a spot in the 22 after being on the cusp of selection for a number of weeks and defender Jack Madgen returns after sitting out round 10.

All Australian defender Darcy Moore will run out for his 100th game.

Taylor Adams comes out of the line-up as he battles knee soreness, while Tyler Brown (shoulder) and Josh Thomas (ankle) have not been able to get up for round 11. As reported earlier in the week, Beau McCreery was ruled out with a minor calf strain.

"We didn't finish with the win ... we didn't finish often enough in elements of our play. If we bring that sort of energy, we'll sing the song a lot more than we have. Media Clippings

Port Adelaide staged a stunning final quarter fightback to hand Collingwood its worst start to a season in more than 20 years with a nailbiting one-point win. The Power came to life in the last term at the MCG on Sunday, kicking four fourth-quarter goals to overturn a 13 point deficit at the final change. The Pies have won only two of their first 10 games in 2021 – their worst start to a season since 1999 when they finished the year in last place with only four wins. A tumultuous week off the field, with the resignation of billionaire vice-president Alex Waislitz and members threatening to force an extraordinary general meeting, the Pies fought hard all day but two late goals weren’t enough to get them over the line.Pressure continues to mount on coach Nathan Buckley as the Magpies gave up four straight goals to start the final term.

PORT Adelaide has survived a massive scare to stay in touch with the top four with a thrilling one-point come-from-behind victory over a brave Collingwood at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. Despite being second-best for the majority of the contest and trailing until time on in the final term, Ken Hinkley's side turned the game its way during a tight fourth quarter to register an 8.11 (59) to 8.10 (58) win. It was a four-goal-to-two final stanza that gave Port Adelaide the impetus, with Sam Powell-Pepper, Robbie Gray, Travis Boak and Charlie Dixon instrumental in the late turnaround that swung the momentum and gave the visitors their first lead of the afternoon.

Collingwood have coughed up a golden opportunity to turn their season around, giving up a 13-point three-quarter-time lead to fall short by the narrowest of margins against Port Adelaide at the MCG on Sunday. The Pies were on the verge of a defining win over the premiership-contending Power before the visitors kicked four consecutive final-quarter goals to take a 13-point lead of their own. Jordan De Goey, who had just four touches to three-quarter time, was injected into the centre bounce late to give the Magpies a different look, and when youngsters Beau McCreery (three goals) and Cam Poulter kicked back-to-back goals late, just one point separated the two sides. But in the end, the Power held on for a much-needed one-point win, moving to 7-3 to keep their top-four ambitions well and truly in tact.

Defender Jordan Roughead is a welcome addition to the backline after sitting out round 10 with concussion.

Trent Bianco has been listed among the extended bench and is in the mix to make his AFL debut against the Power after strong performances in the VFL.

“We came here to win, and we felt like we had the plan to do so. And I think it probably showed early in the game that what we put in place was going to trouble Sydney. The fact that they only scored 10 goals in the end [shows] defensively we held up for the most part. We’re disappointed for not being able to stick at it and not being able to put enough chains together to score or get field position after quarter-time. The reality is we had some players that dropped away and that’s going to happen at times, especially with young boys.”
- Nathan Buckley

Media Clippings

A Sydney surge from after quarter time has solidified the Swans place inside the AFL’s top eight and compounded Collingwood’s woes in season 2021 as they romped home to win by 30 points at the SCG. After surprising the SCG faithful with a four goal to one first term, courtesy of a double to Jordan De Goey, Collingwood would become the first team this season to endure two goalless quarters – the second and third - as the Swans piled on ten majors to one over the remainder of the contest.

The Collingwood faithful have slammed their side’s performance against Sydney, declaring the Magpies’ effort “utterly embarrassing”, “woeful” and a “horror show”. After surprising the SCG with a four goals to one first term, courtesy of a double to Jordan De Goey, Collingwood would become the first team this season to endure two goalless quarters — the second and third — as the Swans piled on 10 majors to one over the remainder of the contest. The wheels fell off spectacularly after quarter time for Nathan Buckley’s troops, who managed a total of just four points across the second and third terms. The Swans, meanwhile, helped themselves to six unanswered goals in a 37-point turnaround between the first and third breaks. Collingwood kicked just one goal after quarter time, ensuring any pressure eased by last week’s win has been firmly forced back onto Buckley’s shoulders.

Sydney have heaped more misery upon struggling Collingwood, overcoming a lacklustre start to notch an important 30-point win on Saturday. Plagued by injuries, a run of bad form and murmurs of a pending boardroom coup, the Magpies came out with a point to prove at the SCG, scoring three of the first four goals – including two from under-fire star Jordan De Goey – to lead by 18 points at quarter-time. But they were held to just two behinds in the middle quarters and after ex-Swan Darcy Cameron’s 24th-minute set shot, the Pies kicked just one more goal for the remainder of the afternoon.

Collingwood v Sydney

Collingwood is set to blood its sixth debutant of the season, with former Australian Boomer Tom Wilson pulling on the black and white against Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

The Pies signed the talented junior athlete as a Category B rookie in 2019.

Wilson chose to pursue a career in basketball at age 16 and went on to represent the country in the Under 17 and Under 19 FIBA World Championships as well as join the Australian Boomers team.

Wilson has impressed in Collingwood's VFL side on the wing and as a rebounding half-back.

He averages 21 disposals and 5.8 marks, with a season-high 30 disposals against Gold Coast.

In other selection news, Callum Brown comes into the 22 after being medical substitute in round 8.

The Pies will be without Jordan Roughead and Nathan Murphy after receiving head knocks against North Melbourne.

“When you are a Collingwood person ( Jordan De Goey), when things are going either well or bad, they get pushed to the extremities and when you are a character within that organisation you get scrutinised really heavily, you get put on a pedestal for your good performances and you get kicked in the guts for your poor ones. Jordy is in the mix, our expectations internally are that he continues to work for his teammates and tries to play his role to the best of his capacity and brings his strengths to the fore. We’ll challenge the professional while supporting the person and that is not what seems to happen externally.” – Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley

Media Clippings

The AFL’s new concussion protocols are set for their fiercest test yet with Collingwood set to ask the league to clear Jordan Roughead and Nathan Murphy to play in Round 9. Both players were withdrawn from Saturday’s much needed win over North Melbourne by club medicos with concussion. League rules stipulate they must now miss at least 12 days, which would rule both players out for next Saturday’s away clash with Sydney. But the Magpies are set to investigate whether they can be granted exemptions given they both passed their tests.

AN ELECTRIC performance from Jordan De Goey has helped Collingwood snap a five-game losing streak with an 18-point win over a spirited North Melbourne outfit on Saturday. After a poor performance against the Suns last week, De Goey returned to form with 6.3 and 17 touches in the 14.10 (94) to 11.10 (76) win. Darcy Moore was moved back into defence and starred with 26 disposals and 17 marks, while Brayden Maynard also impressed down back with 32 disposals

Collingwood forward Jordan De Goey has led the Magpies to a much-needed victory over the winless North Melbourne, kicking six goals in a performance that will relieve some pressure on the under-fire club. The 25-year-old received strong feedback about his performance after last week’s loss to the Suns but he appeared switched on from the start, kicking a goal in the first minute after Steele Sidebottom – in his 250th game – hit De Goey on the chest. He kicked four first-half goals as the Magpies established a match-winning lead late in the second quarter, with his fourth goal starting a run of four unanswered goals from the Magpies. Collingwood then withstood a fierce and worrying third-quarter comeback from the Kangaroos, who kicked the first four goals in the second half to drag the margin back to six points.

The Mercury - Mick Malthouse

Collingwood will be hounded by all sorts of suggestions and opinions from the media, key outside figures, and supporter groups in the coming weeks, regardless of yesterday’s result, and the club could find itself in a very dark place very quickly if the current board doesn’t receive full support from all. I fear that would drag them back to the dark ages of infighting and feuding. ... Collingwood is struggling on the field. It has climbed the ladder and unfortunately for the supporters also dropped a few rungs. ... Collingwood as a team is far better than second bottom on the ladder. With 14 games to go the Pies could conceivably win 60-70 per cent of those which would give them a fair look at just outside the top eight. But I wonder whether there is enough harmony within the group, a trust without compromise, to stay the course.

Round 8
Collingwood v North Melbourne

The stakes for a cellar-dweller clash in the AFL have rarely been higher.

Nathan Buckley is coaching for his career at Collingwood when the Magpies face winless North Melbourne at Docklands on Saturday.

Out-of-contract at season's end, Buckley's grip on the job could come completely loose if Collingwood fall to the rebuilding Kangaroos.

With the Magpies in disarray at 1-6, having lost their last five matches, North are eyeing a rare win.

The Kangaroos have lost 15 matches in row, dating back to round 10 last year.

The Kangaroos impressed in last week's match against ladder-leaders Melbourne, with the eventual 30-point margin not doing justice to how competitive North were.

North coach David Noble will be trying to plot the demise of his son John's Magpies, with the pair to become only the third father-son duo in VFL/AFL history to compete against each other on opposing sides.

Collingwood have recalled youngster Oliver Henry at the expense of fellow first-round draft pick Finlay Macrae.

The Magpies will have added motivation to lift with premiership midfielder Steele Sidebottom to run out for his 250th game.

Amid a horror season, Nathan Buckley is under pressure to justify his future as coach following a horror loss to the Suns.

GOLD Coast has condemned Collingwood to its fifth straight loss and placed further pressure on besieged coach Nathan Buckley with a stunning 24-point win at the MCG on Saturday.

Collingwood’s win-loss record, according to football-department chief Graham Wright, may not be all that matters in Nathan Buckley’s hope of being reappointed as coach next season, but it’s hard not to think losses of the kind experienced against the Gold Coast Suns on Saturday could sink his bid. The Magpies fell to their fifth-straight defeat, this time by 24 points in front of only 24,397 fans at the MCG, the first time the resurgent Suns blessed with significant young talent have beaten the Pies in Melbourne.

Roar

My goodness, how the mighty have fallen. The once-great Collingwood reduced to rubble off the field and a rabble on it. Plenty of clubs have shot themselves in the foot over the years, but since the start of trade period last season, the Pies have fired bullets into their own torso and heart as well.
