“You look at it and you go, ‘0.7 at half-time,’ and you think, ‘We’re not playing that bad, we were in the game. We were 16 inside-50s to 14 with eight minutes to go in the second quarter, we had more opportunity to score than the opposition and we hadn’t got a goal on the board and they had three or four. There are some elements we need to work on but we’re getting games [into players]. Over the last three or four weeks I think we’re tracking in the right direction. We’re playing some pretty good sides and we’ve been very competitive. If we keep focusing on working together and finding our best, the wins will come.” - Nathan Buckley

A third-quarter injury to Collingwood’s best player has rubbed salt into the wound of a third-straight loss that has plunged the Magpies’ season further into the mire. Grundy was contesting a mark on centre-wing when he went down with what looked to be a right shoulder injury but was, in fact, an injury to his neck. He was subbed out halfway through the quarter and later taken to hospital. The severity of the injury was unknown, but it looks likely to keep the All-Australian ruckman out for at least next week. ... The injury came after Grundy, ironically, had delivered the Pies first goal of the match — in the first minute of the third-quarter — the first time in 116 years Collingwood had failed to kick a goal in the first half at the MCG.Saturday’s opening half was also the second time in three weeks the Magpies have gone back-to-back quarters without registering a major.

A picture might be able to paint 1000 words, but the MCG scoreboard certainly couldn't on Saturday. On the face of it, Collingwood's 10-point loss to Geelong might not have been so bad. Dig a little deeper, though, and this was another defining day in an already turbulent Magpies season. Collingwood endured a goalless first half for the first time since 2005 at the MCG, mustering a measly one major to the final change. Only a late flourish, where the Pies added a host of junk-time goals, would lessen the damage by the final siren. Instead, they had the Cats to thank for the fact the 8.13 (61) to 6.15 (51) scoreline wasn't far more dramatic. Last year's Grand Finalists weren't necessarily firing on all cylinders, but barely needed to escape second gear to cruise to a comfortable four points. A neck injury to dual Collingwood best and fairest Brodie Grundy, which forced the two-time All-Australian to be substituted out of the match midway through the third quarter, compounded issues for the Magpies.

Star Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy has been taken to hospital for scans and further assessment on a neck injury he sustained during his side’s loss to Geelong on Saturday. Grundy was competing in a marking contest with Cats ruckman Rhys Stanley in the third term before his head was wrenched back mid-air and he landed awkwardly on his right forearm. The dual All-Australian was immediately taken down into the rooms for further assessment. Soon afterwards, Collingwood confirmed Grundy had been subbed out of the game, with Finlay Macrae replacing him. It was initially feared Grundy had hurt his AC joint, but the Pies confirmed to Fox Footy at three quarter-time he’d sustained a neck injury. As play continued in the final quarter at the MCG, Grundy was taken to hospital for precautionary scans with the club concerned he’d pinched a nerve in his neck.
