Alan Toovey will make his return from a knee reconstruction in Collingwood’s final practice match of the pre-season against Gold Coast on Sunday.
The match will begin at 1.10pm AEDT at Metricon Stadium.
Toovey underwent reconstructive surgery on his left knee after he sustained the injury against Essendon on ANZAC Day last year.
He has not played a match since, but his diligent approach to his rehabilitation has enabled him to be selected on the eve of the 2014 home and away season.
Director of Football Rodney Eade told collingwoodfc.com.au on Monday that Toovey had been doing "everything possible and everything right" in his rehabilitation.
“He’s coming to the Gold Coast with a chance of playing some football, but he’s doing everything possible and everything right," Eade said.
"It’s really the surgeon who has to tick off when he feels comfortable that he can play.”
The club rewarded Toovey's on-field consistency and off-field discipline with a three-year contract extention last July.
Of the 29 players that travelled to the Coast for the team’s pre-season training camp, only Tyson Goldsack and Marley Williams will not feature against the Suns.
The Magpies have named a strong squad with vast senior experience, coupled with one player, Tom Langdon, who is yet to make his senior debut.
Three of the club’s four experienced off-season recruits (Jesse White, Taylor Adams and Tony Armstrong) have been named, while Jack Frost and Ben Hudson are the two rookie listed players to make the cut.
Nick Maxwell, who missed last week’s loss to Richmond after receiving a kick to the calf at training, has been deemed fit to play.
He joins Toovey, Taylor Adams, Jarrod Witts, Dayne Beams, Ben Hudson and Ben Sinclair as the squad’s inclusions.
Sinclair and Witts made their return from should surgery in last Sunday’s VFL practice match against Port Melbourne.
The five men to make way are Quinten Lynch, Jackson Ramsay and rookies Jonathon Marsh, Caolan Mooney and Peter Yagmoor.
