Collingwood has ruled Jordan De Goey, Jamie Elliott and Levi Greenwood out of its round one clash against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG this Friday night.
De Goey will undergo surgery on a broken hand after sustaining the injury in an accident at home across the weekend. The young midfielder is likely to be unavailable for selection for two to three weeks.
Elliott's attempt to overcome an ankle injury in time for the season opener has narrowly failed, with the small forward expected to train this week and push for selection in the coming weeks.
Greenwood's time on the sideline will be an extended one, with the midfielder to undergo hip surgery that will see him out of action for four to five weeks.
The club also ruled out Daniel Wells last week.
Collingwood GM Football Geoff Walsh said on Monday, "Jamie was pretty unlucky not to overcome that troublesome ankle in time but we expect him to be back in the selection mix shortly and we'll further assess Jordy and Levi following their procedures."
"It's disappointing to have to rule out players leading into the season opener, however it opens the door for other players who have had strong pre-seasons to get a crack at the reigning premiers this Friday night."
Jordan De Goey will miss Friday's clash with the Western Bulldogs due to hand injury.

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has jokingly suggested his players should be banned from playing with their dogs after midfielder Jordan De Goey was ruled out of the club's opening match with a broken hand.
De Goey told the club he broke his hand when it hit a door as he threw a toy to his pet dog.
The midfielder, who turned 21 last week, becomes the second Magpie to suffer an injury playing with his pet in a little over 12 months.
His teammate Jeremy Howe missed pre-season games last year after he said he had injured his finger throwing a frisbee with his dog.
De Goey will miss the season opener against the Western Bulldogs, and several more weeks, as his hand – which has been broken before – requires surgery.
"If we don't laugh, we'll cry about it," Buckley said.
"He was playing with his dog and he went to throw a toy – it wasn't a Frisbee – and he caught his hand on the edge of a doorhandle."
Levi Greenwood is also on the sidelines with a troublesome hip requiring surgery.
Greenwood has been trying to overcome the injury for the past three weeks, but the Magpies decided on Friday that surgery was the best course of action.
The injured duo adds to a list of unavailable players that also contains Jamie Elliott and Daniel Wells.
Elliott remains doubtful for round two against Richmond as well due to his ankle injury while Wells is a week-to-week proposition, but the Magpies are hopeful he will return in round three.
Buckley said despite the bad news released on Monday morning, the side was in good shape heading into round one, with 38 players available and the competition for spots hot.
"We're going to leave some blokes out who deserve to play this week," he said.
New faces with a chance of being selected included Chris Mayne, Will Hoskin-Elliott, Lynden Dunn and elevated rookie Henry Schade, who were all recruited to the club in the off-season.

NATHAN Buckley says Collingwood's list is in "really good shape" despite three key players being ruled out of Round 1 today.
Former Kangaroo Daniel Wells is also a non-starter and it was only a week ago that Scott Pendlebury pulled out of the Magpies' final pre-season match with Achilles soreness — although he has trained strongly and is expected to play against the Bulldogs on Friday night.
"We've got 38 players to pick from so I think comparatively we're actually in really good shape," Buckley said today.
"We don't prepare to have 22 blokes play 22 weeks. We prepare to prepare the depth of the squad to play roles as expected and as required
"We're really confident we'll put out a competitive 22 and we're really looking forward to getting the season started for us on Friday night. We've got some challenges early in the year and we're looking forward to them all."

Collingwood casualty ward
Jordan De Goey
Broke his hand on Saturday after getting it caught on a door handle while playing with his dog. Expected to miss 3-4 weeks.
Levi Greenwood
Having surgery today on a troublesome hip. Expected to miss 4-5 weeks.
Jamie Elliott
Having recovered from back issues which saw him miss last season, now has an ankle complaint. Will miss Round 1 and most likely Round 2.
Daniel Wells
Currently on a training program which will hopefully see him play "some football" in Round 3, likely VFL. Best case scenario appears to be him taking on St Kilda in Round 4.

What does it mean?
It's a big year for Collingwood and coach Nathan Buckley, who is entering his sixth year in charge — and the final year of his contract — and has not steered the side to finals since 2013.
Wells wasn't there last year while Elliott also missed all of the 2016 campaign.
But De Goey played 20 games in 2016 and Greenwood 21, both playing key roles.
The Magpies meet the Western Bulldogs, Richmond, Sydney and St Kilda in the opening month, with three of those sides being widely tipped to play finals this year.
The feeling is Collingwood needs a strong start, which now looks an even more difficult task.
If not, the pressure will quickly build at the Holden Centre.
