Collingwood News
Collingwood’s Tim Broomhead is line to become the eighth Magpie to make his senior debut in 2013 after he was named in an extended 25-man squad to face the Western Bulldogs on Sunday.
Joining the returning Sam Dwyer and Jamie Elliott as inclusions for the clash, Broomhead’s selection highlights the ongoing emergence of youth at the Westpac Centre as coach Nathan Buckley reaffirms his faith in generation next.
Selected at pick 20 in the 2012 National Draft, Broomhead joined Collingwood after making his mark at senior level in the SANFL with Port Adelaide, featuring on 10 occasions, while he played five matches for South Australia at the U/18 National Championships.
Sidelined with glandular fever during the early stages of the season, Broomhead has certainly compensated for time missed with a series of stellar displays across half-back at VFL level, earning comparisons with Scott Pendlebury for his composure and elite evasive ability.
Fellow youngster Elliott returns destined to reassume his status as a key foil to Travis Cloke in the Collingwood forward line after missing the last round through hamstring soreness.
Boasting overhead ability belying his diminutive stature, Elliott’s emergence as a versatile yet damaging small forward has added another unexpected string to Collingwood’s attacking bow.
Booting 17 goals to sit second on the club’s goal kicking table, Elliott’s inclusion is a boon for a Magpie side seeking to record a season-best third successive triumph.
Collingwood’s cause has been further aided by the selection of Dwyer, who will seek to reclaim the rich vein of form which saw him emerge as one of the surprise breakout stars of the season following an enforced two-week absence due to a groin injury.
Averaging 17 disposals in his nine outings this season, Dwyer’s vision across the half-forward line has seen the former Port Melbourne star become a leading creative force in the attacking side of the ground, providing 13 assists to complement his nine majors.
Rewarding Monday’s squad for its 83-point victory over Melbourne, Buckley is yet to name any omissions for the weekend’s match.
At VFL level, Clinton Young is poised to make his long awaited comeback from injury, while star midfielder Dayne Beams is earmarked to feature following the bye.
