Midfielder Steele Sidebottom will undergo a fitness test on his broken thumb ahead of Collingwood’s clash with Richmond at the MCG on Sunday.
“Steele is some chance to play this week,” Director of Football Neil Balme said.
“We’re hopeful of that but he needs to get through training and we will review it later on in the week, so it will either be this week or next week.”
Sidebottom originally sustained the injury during a best on ground performance against Brisbane in the opening round.
Paul Seedsman is likely to return against the Tigers after a week on the sidelines with a glute concern, but he is unlikely to be joined by Jackson Ramsay (shin).
“It’s a little bit more painful than we thought it would be so it’s unlikely that he will get up for this week,” Balme continued, “but we are hopeful it will only be short-term.”
As for Ben Reid, Balme says he is a strong chance to take the next step in his recovery from soft tissue injuries with a return in the VFL on Sunday.
“We’re very optimistic that he will play VFL this week. Let’s hope we can get some games into him and give him a chance to show us what he can do.”

Collingwood have been dealt a blow, with prized draftee Nathan Freeman set to undergo exploratory surgery on his hamstring on Tuesday.
Freeman, 19, was hurt in the VFL on Saturday.
He has endured hamstring problems, having initially injured himself in last year's NAB Challenge and missed the rest of the season.
"Nathan has been having a bit of trouble with his hamstring which kept him out last year and he hasn't been quite able to get up to full speed regularly," Magpies director of football Neil Balme told the club website.
"Tomorrow (Tuesday) he is going to have some exploratory surgery on the hamstring.
"There may be some scar tissue or may be some neural issues which are holding him back so we will have a go at that and see how he goes.
"He will certainly be medium-term in recovering from that surgery.
"It's disappointing but I think it will be the best thing for Nathan."
Freeman was the overall tenth overall selection in the 2013 national draft.
