Taylor Adams
Midfielder Taylor Adams has been offered a two week suspension by the AFL's Match Review Panel after kneeing Port Adelaide's Justin Westhoff.
In accepting an early plea, Adams' suspension will remain at two weeks due to an existing poor record.
Collingwood's next two matches are against West Coast and the Western Bulldogs (both at Etihad Stadium).
The Match Review Panel offered the following assessment of the Adams-Westhoff incident on Monday evening: Taylor Adams, Collingwood, has been charged with charged with kneeing Justin Westhoff, Port Adelaide, during the third quarter of the round 15 match between Collingwood and Port Adelaide, played at Adelaide Oval on Thursday July 9, 2015.
In summary, due to an existing poor record, his two-match suspension would remain at a two-match penalty if he accepted an early plea.
Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Port Adelaide Football Club, it was the view of the panel the incident should be classified as intentional conduct with low impact to the head.
This offence was classified as a two-match sanction. The player has an applicable bad record which increases the penalty to a three-match sanction.
An early plea can reduce the penalty to a two-match sanction.
Collingwood will have to do without crafty midfielder Tim Broomhead in the run to September after scans revealed a crack in his shoulder.
Broomhead was tossed the red vest and left to ice his left shoulder after leaving the field early in the third quarter against Port Adelaide last Thursday.
“It turns out Tim has got a slight undisplaced crack in his shoulder and will miss medium term, probably six weeks or so, which is very disappointing for Tim,” Director of Football Neil Balme told CollingwoodTV’s Blackmores Injury Update.
“Hopefully he will be back before the end of the season.”
Should Taylor Adams accept his ban for kneeing Port’s Justin Westhoff, the injury ensures there will be at least two changes to the Collingwood midfield.
The injury derails the momentum Broomhead has generated in recent weeks, sparked by his Rising Star nomination in round 11.
He has strung five consecutive games together since the Queen’s Birthday and averaged 20.0 disposals per game in his three outings prior to sustaining the injury.
One man vying to replace Broomhead’s name in the Collingwood 22 is Tyson Goldsack, who may return from knee tendonitis against West Coast should he clear a fitness test at training later this week.
“He’s actually a lot better this week and is a fair chance of playing (against the Eagles),” Balme said.
“It’s just a matter of how he can train.”
The tale of injured backman Ben Reid looks set to swing upwards, with Balme hinting at a possible return from a calf complaint in the VFL on Sunday.
Reid has played five VFL games this season, the most coming against Box Hill at Victoria Park a fortnight ago.
