Jack Frost has “dodged a bullet”, in the words of Rodney Eade, after scans revealed the young defender has not suffered any damage to the knee he hyperextended during Collingwood’s loss to the Western Bulldogs on Sunday.
Frost left the field late in the opening quarter but returned after the first change and played out the remainder of the match.
“He hyperextended his knee but it looks like he’s dodged a bullet,” Eade told CollingwoodTV’s Blackmores Injury Update.
“There’s no damage to any part of his knee, it’s just a little bit sore at this stage but we’re pretty confident that he will be able to get up and play this weekend.”
Collingwood’s key defensive stocks will be put to its greatest test yet against Hawthorn this Saturday, and Frost’s presence will be vital in ensuring it stands up against Jarryd Roughead, Jack Gunston and co.
The addition of Ben Reid would have provided extra cover in the defensive 50, but it appears it will be at least another 2-3 weeks before the swingman’s stop-start season resumes.
Reid sustained a minor quad injury during last Friday’s training session and missed the VFL loss to Sandringham the following day.
“It wasn’t in the act of kicking, it was just a take off, not even springing, just a take off motion in his running,” Eade explained.
“He just felt a little twinge. It’s a 2-3 week injury at this stage, so it’s really minor in scale but we’re just going to be cautious with him.”
Dayne Beams, who was a late withdrawal from Sunday’s match, will undergo a fitness test on his sore calf while backmen Tyson Goldsack (knee) and Nick Maxwell (calf) will need at least one more week on the sidelines before returning.
