Brent Macaffer’s bid to return from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament has taken a blow, with the tagger to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee.
While the surgery itself is not of great severity, Director of Football Neil Balme believes it will delay his return by three-to-four weeks.
“Brent Macaffer has been struggling with that recovery from his serious surgery on his knee. They are going to go in and have a bit of a look with an arthroscope to see how it goes,” Balme said.
“We’re not expecting anything too serious but it will certainly hold him back with the amount of time it takes for him to recover from the arthroscope which will be three or four weeks before he can get back into his program.
“It was a bit disappointing but it’s probably good news for him as we will be able to get him back on track.”
Macaffer’s premiership teammate Ben Reid sat out Sunday’s VFL win over Richmond despite being named at full back on Thursday night.
Balme explained the key defender will not be sent back into the action until he has officially reached one hundred per cent fitness.
“We have committed to not playing him unless he is one hundred per cent, so he was a little bit concerned about his conditioning so he didn’t play this week,” Balme continued.
“Unfortunately he will miss this week because of the VFL bye. We are pretty confident about where he is.”
Steele Sidebottom (thumb) and Jackson Ramsay (shin) will have their respective ailments assessed during the week to determine their availability.
Balme dismissed suggestions onballer Ben Kennedy had sustained concussion during the VFL team’s win over Richmond, but noted he sat out the final term with soreness.
“He missed the last quarter because he was a bit sore but he is fine.
“I saw him today; he’s in good shape and will almost certainly be available for this week.”

Injured Magpie Brent Macaffer has had a setback in his recovery from a knee reconstruction, with the midfielder to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee.
The injury is expected to set Macaffer back a further three to four weeks.
Collingwood football manager Neil Balme told the club's website that the Pies aren't expecting the surgery to be too serious.
"They will have an arthroscope to see how it goes," Balme said.
"We're certainly not expecting anything too serious, but it will certainly hold him back."
Balme said Macaffer has been struggling in his recovery from the reconstruction.
"[It's a] bit disappointing, but probably good news. We'll be able to get him back on track," Balme said.
Steele Sidebottom is a chance to return this week after recovering from a broken thumb. Balme said Sidebottom would face a fitness test and whether he plays would be "a matter of how comfortable he is".
Alan Toovey has had scans after jarring his knee in Sunday's loss to Richmond, and while the Pies say the results are fairly positive, they will take a conservative approach to getting him back on the field and he is "no certainty" to play this week.
Darcy Moore is recovering from a hamstring injury and is a chance to play in the VFL in two weeks' time. Collingwood has the bye in the VFL this week which has held back the return of several players.
“We’re not expecting anything too serious but it will certainly hold him back with the amount of time it takes for him to recover from the arthroscope which will be three or four weeks before he can get back into his program."
