ON THE BLOCK: Mason Cox might just about be ready for a breather despite his ability to pinch-hit in the ruck. Cox finished with just two disposals for the match against Carlton but laid three tackles and chimed in with eight hitouts. Tom Phillips failed to fire a shot in his third game. ON THE CUSP: Jesse White (two goals) was best on ground for the VFL Magpies in a narrow win over the Northern Blues. Adam Oxley showed he too was a cut above, while Tim Broomhead got through his comeback game from an ankle injury. Taylor Adams could push for selection but suspect the Pies to take a cautious approach. GILBERT GARDINER'S FORECAST: Only one-eyed Magpies supporters will be ordering the DVD of Saturday night's scrappy 12-point win over Carlton. Scott Pendlebury oozed class, Ben Reid was a pillar of strength down back and Travis Cloke did enough to keep his spot. But truth be told, the Pies need that and more — lots more — if they are to match motors with GWS at Spotless Stadium. Actually, they'd be well served to batten down the hatches given the Giants' incredible record at the venue, having won eight of their past nine by an average 55 points. Adam Treloar will be keen to put his best foot forward in his first game against his old side. |
