"It's nice to have a good start. The first quarter we looked a bit nervous and didn't really think our way through a few situations but (from) quarter-time onwards we started to get our game going. We were really pleased with the result in the end."
– Collingwood coach Steve Symonds

High-profile defector Bri Davey believes she could be fit to take on the side she captained for two years after dodging serious injury in her first victory for new side Collingwood. Davey swapped from Carlton to the Pies over the off-season in a move that left noses out of joint at Ikon Park given her leading role at the foundation club. On Sunday, in Collingwood’s first Round 1 win in four years of AFLW football, she fell heavily in a marking contest and was writhing on the ground in pain. Thankfully she was eventually diagnosed with a kick to the shin that will need scans this week to clear her of any bone damage.

Collingwood News
Scoring issues have plagued the Pies since their inception, and even in the pre-season it seemed they might encounter more problems forward of centre. Coach Symonds' deployment of both the returning Molloy and reigning club champion Jaimee Lambert in forward roles bore fruit with the duo's creativity and hardness providing greater opportunities. A return to Victoria Park brought the Magpie Army back to their homeland, and they seemed to lap up every moment of their team's ice-breaking victory. When the Pies had established an insurmountable lead the black-and-white faithful produced a stirring chant of "Collingwooooooood", which the players relished on an important afternoon for the team.

The Age
Collingwood have opened their season with a win for the first time in AFLW history, accounting for the West Coast Eagles by 27 points on Sunday. As they did in the first three seasons of the competition, the Magpies fell behind early as West Coast's Dana Hooker (18 possessions) slotted the first goal of the game. But after half-time the Magpies were far more assured, running away tovictory in front of 6100 fans at Victoria Park. Not even an injury to star recruit Brianna Davey, who missed most of the 2018 season due to a knee reconstruction when she was playing for Carlton, distracted the Pies. Davey went down with what initially looked like a knee injury in the third quarter, but the Magpies later described it as a "lower leg" injury. "We'll get scans tomorrow to see what's going on, but hopefully it's a bad corky and I'm being a bit soft," Davey told Fox Footy after the game. Under new coach Steve Symonds, the Magpies looked a more assured and cohesive group, scoring a crucial goal into the wind in the third term off the boot of midfielder Stephanie Chiocci, who was among her side's most influential players.
