Collingwood may regain the services of two of its key forwards when it meets Carlton at the MCG on Saturday.
Tyson Goldsack will undergo a test on his quad later this week, after originally experiencing tightness during the warm up ahead of last Saturday’s loss to Melbourne.
“We are reasonably confident that he will be OK for this week but he needs to get through training, so he’s either ready (to play) or short-term,” Director of Football Neil Balme told Collingwood Media’s Blackmores Injury Update.
Travis Cloke (calf) is also in the mix, but is considered more likely to return against Sydney at the SCG the following Friday.
“Travis is going pretty well,” Balme continued.
“He’s not completely out of the question for this week but probably a bit more likely for next week, so he’s certainly short-term.”
Cloke has not played since injuring his calf in the opening minutes of Collingwood’s loss to West Coast at Etihad Stadium in round 16.
Meanwhile, Brent Macaffer and Nathan Freeman have not had it easy in 2015.
Between them, they have managed just one NAB Challenge game and four VFL fixtures.
Injuries have not been kind to either player. Macaffer, of course, knew he was in for a tough twelve months when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament last August.
But Freeman entered the year full of hope after his first season at the club was marred by a succession of hamstring complaints.
Sadly, neither player has had a clear run at returning to the field – until now.
“Nathan’s hamstring is coming along very well,” Balme said.
“He almost certainly won’t play this week but he is a pretty good chance for next week, so we are really excited about that. He’s now short term.
“Brent is in a similar position. He has done a lot of work recovering from that knee reconstruction.
“Probably the week after next week we’ll see him playing as well, so we’re also very excited about that as well, as is Caff.”
The news means Collingwood may regain up to four players - Goldsack, Cloke, Macaffer and Freeman - in the next fortnight.
It leaves Jackson Ramsay (shin), Brenden Abbott and Tim Broomhead, who each have shoulder complaints, as the only players to occupy the injury list in the medium-to-long-term.
