The 30-year-old will undergo a fitness test on his ankle later in the week after originally sustaining the injury during the first quarter of Collingwood’s 11-point loss to Geelong.
“Obviously he came off limping during the game but he’s looked after it as you would imagine, as a true professional does,” Director of Football Rodney Eade told CollingwoodTV.
“He looked after it after the game and stayed up all night icing. It’s pulled up pretty well so he’ll be off legs for most of the week and having a final test on Thursday just to clarify it.
“But we’re pretty confident that he’ll play.”
The news isn’t so good for Sam Dwyer.
The creative small is set to miss this week with the knee injury that saw him substituted out of Saturday night’s loss during the third term.
“He had a slight medial strain," Eade said.
“The doctor has the view that he might be able to play this week. A six-day break will probably count against him.”
Fortunately, 2012 Copeland Trophy winner Dayne Beams is clear to play.
Like Maxwell, Beams hurt his ankle during Saturday night’s loss but will be available for selection against the Tigers.
There’s good news for two members of Collingwood’s young brigade.
Patrick Karnezis (Osteitis Pubis) and Paul Seedsman (hip) are just a week away from beginning their 2014 seasons.
The pair have been sidelined for some time as they’ve steadily overcome their respective concerns.
Karnezis, who turns 22 later this month, has not played a match of any description since crossing from Brisbane on the final day of the AFL’s trade period last year.
Seedsman, meanwhile, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his hip in January.
He played 17 of a possible 23 games last season, entrenching himself as a first-choice option in Nathan Buckley’s best 22.
Nathan Brown’s prognosis also gives reason for optimism.
Brown, who dislocated his shoulder during the second round win over Sydney, is listed as being only 1-2 weeks away from resuming his season.
Unfortunately the same can’t be said for young draftee Nathan Freeman.
Freeman, who injured his hamstring against Geelong in the first round of the NAB Challenge, is still another three weeks away from returning to the field.
“Nathan hurt his hamstring in the NAB Cup (Challenge) but it involves some tendon injury,” Eade explained.
“The tendon takes a long time to heal.
“We would view he’d be playing hopefully by about round seven in the reserves (VFL).”
Tim Broomhead will also miss another fortnight. After overcoming a broken wrist, the luckless teenager will need at least another two weeks to recover from shin splints.
