Ben Reid was taken to the bench holding his shoulder after a clash with Carlton's Levi Greenwood on Saturday afternoon at the MCG.
Ben Reid was taken to the bench holding his shoulder after a clash with Carlton's Levi Greenwood on Saturday afternoon at the MCG.
Ben Reid is a chance to retain his place in Collingwood's side after scans revealed an injury to his AC joint isn't as bad as first expected.
Reid clashed with Carlton's Levi Casboult in the third quarter on Saturday afternoon. He left the ground, before returning later in the game.
Director of Football Neil Balme on Monday told Collingwood Media's 'Blackmores Injury Update' that the defender had received positive results from post-match scans.
"It's not too bad fortunately," Balme said.
"He's got a reasonable chance of playing this week. We'll have to see how he goes and he'll be tested later on in the week."
Accompanying Reid to AAMI Park for medical assessment on Monday morning was Tim Broomhead.
The news wasn't as good for the 21-gamer who will be sidelined by an ankle injury.
Broomhead aggravated the syndesmosis joint in his ankle, a similar issue to that currently being overcome by teammate Tom Langdon.
"Tim Broomhead's ankle is probably a touch worse (than Reid's injury)," Balme said.
"He's short to medium term with that sadly."
In addition to two injuries stemming from Collingwood's AFL game, a pair of fresh concerns also arose as the VFL Magpies took on Sandringham at the Holden Centre on Saturday evening.
Travis Cloke failed to take his place in the starting line-up, with Balme sighting a minor back injury as the reason behind the key forward's absence.
"He was a bit sore during the week and it was treated and he came up fairly well for the weekend," Balme explained.
"Before the game he felt a fair bit of pain in his back and also the fact that he couldn't really feel his leg as well as he should.
"It was a bit of a risk to play."
Cloke will be tested this week alongside 2010 Premiership teammate Nathan Brown.
Brown played in the VFL, yet left the ground on the verge of three-quarter time.
He returned to encourage teammates at the huddle with an ice-pack on his hamstring, yet didn't take any further part in the game.
"Nathan Brown's hamstring isn't too bad," Balme said.
"The scans don't look too bad at all.
"He's a silly chance of being available this week, but probably more likely that he'll miss just one (game)."
For the third week in a row, a number of Magpies will face fitness tests ahead of a trip to Brisbane to take on the Lions.
In addition to Reid and Cloke, Taylor Adams, Travis Varcoe, Ben Sinclair and Corey Gault all on schedule to return to action.
Balme said he was "hopeful" that Adams would take a place in the starting 22, while adding that the club was "even more confident" Varcoe would return after missing the last two games.

ON THE BLOCK: Tim Broomhead will miss a couple of weeks after injuring his ankle but the news is better for Ben Reid who is a chance to play this weekend despite hurting his AC joint. James Aish put in another shocker — 10 disposals at 40 per cent and four frees against — while Ben Crocker and Mason Cox also struggled to impact the contest. Josh Smith started slowly but got better as the game went on.

ON THE CUSP: Nathan Brown, omitted from the senior team last week, hurt his hamstring in the VFL but hasn't been ruled out of a return yet, neither has Travis Cloke who didn't play in the VFL due to a back complaint. Both will face fitness tests this week. Taylor Adams (knee) and Travis Varcoe (hamstring) are in the mix but will need to get through training this week, same goes for running defender Ben Sinclair (concussion). Jarrod Witts made his long-awaited return from a hand injury in the VFL and was among the Magpies' best.

GILBERT GARDINER'S FORECAST: It's hot in Bucks' Kitchen and it's only going to get hotter should the Pies get rolled in Brisbane on Saturday night. Need to get more out of the middle tier — Blair, Greenwood, Crips, Oxley, De Goey — to avert the slide. On a more positive note Jeremy Howe put in his best performance in the black and white, while Alex Fasolo (four goals) is tracking towards a career-year in front of the big sticks.
