Collingwood’s gutsy six-point win over Port Adelaide has come at a cost, with young midfielder Taylor Adams ruled out for the next 4-6 weeks with a torn ligament in his finger.
Adams, who joined the Magpies from Greater Western Sydney in a direct swap for Heath Shaw, damaged the ligament in the opening quarter of Sunday’s win but played out the match.
“After the game, the fear was that he’d torn the tendon off the top end of his ring finger on his left hand,” Director of Football Rodney Eade told CollingwoodTV’s Blackmores Injury Update.
“Having been to the surgeon (confirms) that is the case.
“He’ll have surgery so it’s a four to six week injury.”
The 20-year-old has played 12 games so far this season for a career total of 43. He is currently averaging 19.17 disposals and 3.58 tackles per game, and his 28 disposals against the Power was his second largest return for the season to date.
The news is better for Brent Macaffer, who has escaped any serious injury after rolling his ankle during the opening minutes of Sunday’s match.
“Macaffer rolled his ankle early but was able to finish the game,” Eade said.
“He’s a little bit sore today but is moving OK. There’ll be tests later in the week but we’re reasonably confident he’ll play and be available.”
Eade reported several players currently on the injury list are progressing nicely in their rehabilitation.
Dane Swan (foot), Alan Toovey (back) and Paul Seedsman (groin) are all on track, as is Nathan Freeman (hamstring) who has not played any football since sustaining his initial hamstring injury during the NAB Challenge.
“He was still a bit sore in his hamstring last week but he has hopefully now turned the corner,” Eade said.
“We’re hopeful that he could be available in the next week or two to be able to play.
“It’s been a long, tortuous year for him with both his hamstrings going at various stages but he ran very strongly today, so fingers crossed for him.”
Freeman was recruited to Collingwood with the 10th overall selection in last November’s National Draft.
