Collingwood’s extraordinary injury toll continues to mount in the wake of its loss to Brisbane.
Premiership backmen Alan Toovey (groin) and Heritier Lumumba (corked thigh) join Scott Pendlebury (corked quad), Travis Cloke (ankle), Dayne Beams (knee), Ben Reid (hamstring) and Jamie Elliott (hamstring) as casualties from the weekend.
Director of Football Rodney Eade confirmed Toovey will miss Saturday’s trip to face Greater Western Sydney but hopes Lumumba, Pendlebury and Elliott will be available to play.
“Alan Toovey hurt his groin in the third quarter. He got tight, so he won’t play this week, he’s unavailable,” Eade confirmed on CollingwoodTV’s Blackmores Injury Update.
“Heritier Lumumba came out with a corkie from the West Coast game and got another knock it on during the game and was struggling towards the end.
“He’s a test later in the week so we’ll just have to wait and see how he comes up.”
Eade said Saturday’s injury toll was unprecedented during his time in VFL/AFL football.
“In my time in the AFL footy, 30 odd years, it’s probably the most rare event that I’ve seen where, if you count Jamie Elliott who got a tight back and a tight hamstring the day before our game, we had five of our best eight not playing out of the game.
“Out of that, all the injuries are either to quality players or experienced players.
“Even though we’re a young team – we’re the fourth youngest squad in the competition – we’ll be a lot younger this week,” Eade said.
“It’s a good chance and a good opportunity for some players who might get their first game but also a chance for our young players to stand up.”
While Beams and Reid won’t feature again this year, and Cloke is unlikely to figure unless the team progresses deep into September, Pendlebury and Elliott will be tested later this week ahead of the clash with the Giants.
Another Magpie whose season is over is first-year draftee Nathan Freeman, who has not featured at any level since injuring his hamstring tendon in the first round of the NAB Challenge.
