REAL FOOTY
Collingwood small forward Alex Fasolo has suffered a foot injury which could end his season. The exciting prospect injured a bone in his foot at training on Monday and will have surgery on Friday.
He is expected to be sidelined for "most (if not the rest of) the season" according to the club.
Fasolo was dropped after a lacklustre performance, especially defensively, on Anzac Day against Essendon, but he remained a big part of Collingwood's long-term forward line plans.
The 20-year-old West Australian's pre-season was interrupted by a hamstring injury. He resumed in round three against Hawthorn and has played three games this year for one goal and an average of 11 possessions.
Collingwood director of football, Geoff Walsh, told the Collingwood website said precautionary scans found a crack of the bone at the top of Fasolo’s foot.
"Given the nature of the injury it’s likely that he will miss most, if not all, of the rest of the season. We’re sure Alex will do everything right in terms of his rehabilitation which should give him some hope for 2013 but there can be no rush with an injury of this kind," Walsh said.
Fasolo played in 24 games for Collingwood in 2012, his second season, booting 28 goals and laying 64 tackles. At his best, he is a pacy, dynamic small forward with the ability to kick goals from long range.
Collingwood's injury list includes key midfielder Dayne Beams, former Hawthorn winger Clinton Jones, lynchpin half-back Alan Toovey and highly promising tall utility Lachie Keeffe. None are expected back in the short-term, and Toovey is out for the season with a knee injury.
Magpie forward line options
Outside the league's best contested marking forward Travis Cloke, Collingwood has few in-form, established options in attack.
Quinten Lynch: Valiant performer as a second ruck, and handy pumping the ball inside 50, but has scored only three goals in seven games for the Magpies.
Jamie Elliott: Started brilliantly, with eight goals in two weeks in rounds two and three. Strong mark for his size. Only one goal in the past three matches.
Andrew Krakouer: Late starter due to interrupted pre-season. Never quick to start with, he has lost another yard of pace. Three goals and four tackles in two games.
Alan Didak: Injury-plagued veteran who struggled in 2011, and played only 11 times in 2012. Has played five games in the seconds, recording good numbers, but questions remain about his pace and defensive capability at the highest level, especially if he is named in the same forward line as Krakouer.
Tyson Goldsack: Former half-back who was a success as a defensive forward in 2012, when he booted averaged a goal and three tackles per game. In and out of the team due to injury this year, and was required in the backline at times due to injuries there.
Caolan Mooney: Incredibly quick and raw Irish recruit, who showed glimpses when blooded last year. Hurt in first game last week, but apparently will be available for sleection. Needs time and opportunities. Will get more of the latter than the former with team under pressure.
Ben Sinclair: Dogged, but unpolished defensive forward. Courageous, but lacks finishing skills. Has recorded 18 goals and 74 tackles in 29 games. Dropped after round five after failing to top 10 disposals in his past three games. Two goals from five appearances in 2013.
Jackson Paine: Promising second-year tall option who marks far better than he kicks. Yet to appear at senior level in 2013. Six games for eight goals and 16 tackles in 2012.
Brent Macaffer: After recovering from major knee operation and failing to fire up forward, Macaffer has been used in the backline and as a tagger in the past three games, to mixed results. One goal this year.
Sam Dwyer: Elevated mature-aged rookie who has shone in all but his goalkicking playing as a "high" half-forward. Creative and plays on to good effect despite not having blistering pace. Only five goals and eight tackles in seven games, however.
