Collingwood is hopeful of regaining the services of as many as six players this coming weekend.
Tom Langdon (concussion) and Marley Williams (ankle) were late withdrawals from the team that beat Carlton by 15-points on Sunday but remain in the frame for a speedy return against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium.
“Tommy passed his concussion test on the Friday but it’s been a long year for him and having the effects of that knock we just thought it would be best that he was rested from the game,” Director of Football Rodney Eade told CollingwoodTV’s Blackmores Injury Update.
“Marley has made a very good progression and we’re hopeful that he’ll be able to play on the weekend.
“He’ll have a test later on in the week but we’re pretty confident that he will be able to play.”
The VFL Magpies may also receive a sudden injection of AFL listed talent.
Ben Reid is set to return from the quad injury he sustained during training earlier this month, while Nathan Freeman, the tenth selection in last November’s National Draft, is in line to play his first match of any kind since 12 February.
“Reid will make his welcome return in the reserves (VFL) on the weekend, which is pleasing,” Eade said.
“Freeman will be available for his first game as well, so that will be pleasing. He will probably get a half to a bit over a half a game in his first game back.”
Freeman has been ultra patient during his recovery from the hamstring injury he originally sustained during the first match of the NAB Challenge against Geelong some four months ago.
“Nathan hurt his hamstring in the NAB Challenge, but it involves some tendon injury,” Eade explained back in April.
“The tendon takes a long time to heal."
They may yet be joined by veteran backman Nick Maxwell.
The former skipper has missed four weeks with a calf injury but is now on the verge of returning to the field.
“We’re hopeful he’ll be available this week. We’re pretty confident,” Eade told CollingwoodTV.
“He missed his fourth on the weekend, so he’s been training for a couple of weeks.
“We’ve just got to decide whether we’re going to put him straight back (in the AFL) or if he has a run in the reserves (VFL).”
Hard running back pocket Ben Sinclair will also undergo a test on his injured hamstring. The 22-year-old was scheduled to return in the VFL against Richmond on Saturday but was a late withdrawal.
Regardless of what happens, Collingwood will be without its leading goal kicker for at least the next week.
Jamie Elliott, who was substituted out of Sunday’s match during the third quarter, is unlikely to make the trip to take on the Suns.
“He just felt an awareness in his hamstring. He alerted us to that fact and it was best to actually take him out of the game,” Eade said.
“The scan looks pretty good, even though it’s like a more of a cramp situation.
“There was obviously a sensation there so with the six-day break it is unlikely that he’ll play this week.”
